Engine Design Project

The document outlines requirements for a group final project involving redesign of an adjustable pulley. Students are asked to: 1) Determine the optimal assembly order and analyze for improvements using DFA and DFM; 2) Calculate positional tolerances for mating parts under MMC conditions; and 3) Develop alternative process plans for the original and redesign using Nakamura methods and tolerance analyses, listing any assumptions. A report detailing redesign proposals is required.

Engineering Design and Rapid Prototyping – INDE 6386

Group Final Project – Fall 2022

Consider the adjustable pulley in the figure below. Total number of sells for is estimated at 450,000 annually.
• Determines the best assembly order. Hex nuts and washers are purchased and cost are negligible.
• Can this design be improved? Use DFA and DFM analysis. What will be the time and cost savings?
• Calculate the positional tolerance zone for all mating parts and further detail the specifications for
these features. Consider only MMC condition.
• Attach 2D drawing(s) using the result of the above analysis.
• Develop two alternative process plan for the original and your redesign using Num Suh method. Only use
tolerances tables for machinability analysis. DFM tolerance tables can be used for these analysis.
• List any assumption(s) regarding assembly and manufacturing processes.
• Write a detailed report of your design proposal(s).
