FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT 4
Part 1: Ray Diagram Graphics (40 pts)
• Using the section drawing provided, draft this in an A3 size paper. Minimum scale is
1:50 mts. Apply proper graphic standards.
• Get the sound path difference of seat location 1, 2, and 3 using your protractor and
drafting tools. Follow the example as illustrated for seat location 1. Show your
complete solution.
• Compare the result obtained among the three locations. What are the listening
conditions? What can you infer from this? Explain.
Front Location 1 Middle Location 2
1240mm ≈ 4.07ft 2250mm ≈ 7.38ft
1770mm ≈ 5.81ft 3500mm ≈ 11.48ft
1725mm ≈ 5.66ft 5250mm ≈ 17.22ft
Path difference = (4.07 + 5.81) – 5.66 Path difference = (7.38 + 11.48) – 17.22
Path difference = 4.22ft Path difference = 1.64ft
Rear Location 3
3250mm ≈ 10.66ft
5000mm ≈ 16.40ft
7900mm ≈ 25.92ft
Path difference = (10.66 + 16.40) – 25.92
Path difference = 1.14ft
The result of path differences based on the Design Guide of General Listening
Conditions shows that the listening condition of the untreated and unmodified product demo
room still falls under the excellent condition for speech and music. This is because of the
small volume of the room that is why the sound can still be clearly received even by the last
person on the last row.
Part 2: Room Acoustics – Ceiling and Wall Treatment (60 pts)
• Improve the room acoustics of the product demo room by proposing design
modifications for the ceiling and wall. Refer to Module 1.5: Room Acoustics for echo
control principles and sound absorbing treatment.
For the modifications of material finishes on the product demo room, the traditional
flat ceiling was changed to an angled one to direct the echo further and reduce the sound
waves from bouncing back. The rear wall of the demo room was also covered in thick porous
material to absorb and dampen the sound coming from the speaker on the front.
• Provide the following drawings in at least 1:50 mts scale. Use an A3 paper for the
drawing.
o Modified Section of the Product Demo Room
o At least 2 Interior Wall Elevations
• All drawings should be properly annotated showing sound path and
specified finishes. Include dimensions as well.
