THE IMPACT OF ONLINE EDUCATION TO PREPARE FUTURE HIGH-
SCHOOL TEACHER TO TEACH MATHEMATICS IN BATAAN PENINSULA
STATE UNIVERSITY
Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Mathematics subject is one of the subjects learned in Schools and Universities, it
is one of the basic educational components that require students to be skilled and
understand for the various methods used to structure lives in our daily living. Suddenly,
at the end of 2019, the world was shocked by the initiation of the coronavirus in Wuhan,
one of the cities in China, which eventually spread to different countries worldwide.
Therefore, on January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared this
outbreak as a Public Health Emergency. Educational systems have been affected greatly
by global technological changes. By changing needs and living conditions, the
Department of Education (Deped) and Commission on Higher Education (CHED)
attempts to seek solutions to the problems in education highlight online distance
education as an alternative to the existing practices. Online education has become an
important educational model in globalizing world of today and can provide quality
education (Carey, 2020).
Moreover, technology has become one of the best essential tools of learning for
doing mathematics in today’s world especially in the time of pandemic. It can be used in
a variation of ways to enhance and improve the learning of mathematics that operates to
have mainly successful and effective learning (OECD,2020). Future Educator can
highlight the technology to facilitate mathematical problem solving, reasoning,
communication, and even proofs, technology can provide students with opportunities to
explore different representations of mathematical ideas and support them in making
connections both within and outside of mathematics (NRC, 2000).
In the study conducted by Chieu and Herbst (2016) revealed that the teachers are
using video records for teaching mathematics to create a series of exploration and
animation for engaging the learners to have presence for conducting an online forum
discussion. The online participants were encouraged to have knowledge and be more
active to know the importance of online education.
However, according to Morewood, Ankrum & Bean (2010), in their study in
Turkey and about Online Mathematics Teaching, Educational systems have been affected
greatly by global technology changes and the resulting reform initiatives. As an outcome,
technology has become more common in learning environments of today’s generation
(Roblyer, 2006). It provides learners with the opportunity to receive education at a lower
cost and offers a more effective learning environment independent of time and space.
Due to the opportunities and flexibility, it provides for individuals and societies, online
distance learning has become a globally-preferred option (Newby et al., 2006).
These findings from the researcher, encourages the researchers to investigate the
impacts of online education to prepare future Mathematics Teachers to teach Math in
Bataan Peninsula State University-Dinalupihan, Campus. Through this study, the
adjustment and possible technique of students would be implemented to the future online
learning to access well-designed learning plan for the students so that they can easily
cope up with the lessons and be more effective using technology. Furthermore, this
research wants to educate and help the future Mathematics Teacher to understand what
works and why through online learning is possible to have in the education, what the
short and long-term implications are. From a significant perspective, this study ought to
contribute for the preparation of future Educator to teach Mathematics. In addition, the
study wants to give information and techniques that learner may adopt toward online
education learning.
Statement of the problem
The general problem of this study is to determine the impacts of online education
to prepare future high-school teacher to teach mathematics in BPSU-Dinalupihan
Campus.
Specifically, the study seeks answer to the following questions:
1. How may the profile of the respondents be described in terms of:
1.1 Age;
1.2 Sex; and
1.3 Civil Status?
2. How may the teaching of Mathematics in online education of the respondents be
described in terms of:
2.1 Presentation of the lesson;
2.2 Technology Integration; and
2.3 Assessment of learning?
3. What are the possible ways of online education in the future high school teacher
to teach Mathematics?
4. Is there a significant difference in teaching Mathematics when the respondents are
grouped according to their profile?
5. Which among the variables greatly affects the preparation of future high school
teacher to teach mathematics in online education?
Significance of the study
This study will be undertaken to find put the classroom management techniques
rendered by the future Mathematics teacher in Bataan Peninsula State University-
Dinalupihan Campus and to measure the effectiveness through the strategies of the
students.
The Students. The research benefits the students to understand the concept of a
research paper. Any improvement of the paper can continue having a technique and better
learning to give the process of research to collect data and selecting a topic.
Parents. The parents would be able to know if the online education teaching is
very effective to their child. And also, to know what are the factors that can harden their
learning.
The Teacher. This study will be beneficial to the teachers specially to the
teachers who are still searching for reference in using techniques to have a better
discussion with the topic. Through this research, teacher build understanding with the
resources and techniques of having a professional support. Effectiveness of Mathematics
teachers can also be their basis and pattern that can help them with their research for it to
have strong foundation.
Curriculum Maker. The outcome of the study may serve as a basis for possible
innovation that may strength the teacher program suited to the need of the students.
Future Researchers. The ideas presented may be used as reference data in
conducting new researches and serve in testing the validity of other related findings. This
study will also compose of findings wherein serve as their reference that will give them a
background or an overview to continue with the information and topic that are given.
Scope and Delimitation
The study primarily focused on the impact of online education to prepare future
high-school Teacher to teach Mathematics in Bataan Peninsula State University at
Dinalupihan Campus.
The factors identified in the study are considered to be related to the problem such
as their age, sex, year level and economic status.
In all Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Math students of Bataan
Peninsula State University-Dinalupihan Campus, fifty students are randomly selected and
each of the respondents is given same questionnaire to answer.
