FS 1 – THE LEARNER’S DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENT

Episode 3 -Classroom Management and Learning

Name of FS Student: Maurice Aaron Lemorinas Sebastian

Course: Bachelor of Secondary Education Section: English 4
Resource Teacher: Mr. Rowell T. Santos Date: October 8, 2022
Cooperating School: Colegio de Calumpit Inc.

My Target
At the end of this activity, I will gain competence in managing time, space and resources to
provide an environment which is appropriate to the learners and conducive to learning.

My Tools
Use the activity form provided to document my observation.

An Observation Guide for the Learners’ Characteristics

1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their ages.
2. How many boys are there? How many girls?
3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?
4. Can the learners already work independently?
5. Describe their span of attention.
6. Look into their listening skills and ability to concentrate.

Location of the School: Iba O Este, Calumpit, Bulacan Date of the Visit: 10/08/22

1. Majority of the sudents I have observed on either grade 8 and grade 12 are on the age
range of 12-18.
2. Majority of the sections I have observed have a balance in numbers of boys and girls
3. In terms of grade 8 students, I was surprised that they are able to control and manage
their behavior during lessons and or quiz or exams. On the other hand, the grade 12
students I have observed are far better in terms of emotional or behavioral stability.
4. No, according to the students I witnessed in grade 8 Sampaguita. Because of their
habit of seeking assistance from their seatmates for every task they do, the students
are unable to function independently. The same cannot be said for the grade 12
students I have worked with. When it comes to their next research, they took the
initiative to sign which pupils should be placed in which groups.
5. To say the least, the pupils I've worked with have an outstanding attention span. The
grade 8 kids were able to maintain their attention on the lesson being addressed. The
same can be true for grade 12 students in all senior high school stands.
6. Similar to their attention span, I am pleased to report that their listening and
concentration abilities are excellent, as evidenced by their participation in class
discussions and recitations.
Observation Guide for the CLASSROOM VISIT

Be guided these questions as you do your observation of the classroom management. It is also good to
ask the teacher for additional information so you can verify your observation. Write your notes below;
and then organize your data in the table that follows.

1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids, books, students’
belongings, supplies, etc.)
2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room?
3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules?
4. What are the daily routines done by the teacher? (Prayer, attendance, assignment of monitors,
warm- up activities, etc.) How are they done?
5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of the arrangement?
6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?
7. If a learner is not following instructions or is off-task, what does the teacher do? (behavior
strategies}
8. What does the teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (behavior strategies)

Name of the School: Colegio De Calumpit Inc. Observed: _______________

Location of the School: Iba O Este, Calumpit, Bulacan Date of the Visit: 10/08/22

1. The one area in the classroom that all the students respected and stayed away most of the time is
the teacher’s desk.
2. The one significant rule posted in the classrooms are the minimum health protocols of wearing
face masks at all times within the classroom.
3. Students were involved in developing unwritten rules for the classroom, one of which being that
no students are permitted to use their smart phones during class discussions.
4. The cooperating teacher always begins each class by having different students lead the prayer,
then immediately following the prayer, taking attendance of the current students who attended
the class, ice breaker games before the actual lecture proper. Every student has been exposed to
these formulaic procedures in all of their classes.
5. Seating is organized alphabetically by surname to ensure that all students have their assigned
seats. The major goal of this arrangement is to have a fair and simple means of inviting students
to participate in class discussions or recitations.
6. By the time the lesson begins, the noise level in each classroom I've observed is pretty low. The
class officers control this using verbal cues.
7. The teacher gently corrects students who do not follow directions by providing positive and
encouraging feedback. This helps the students realize that they are capable of performing better
than they believe.
8. The teacher reinforce positive behavior by praising each students who were able to follow
instructions, and at the same time still encourages the students who were unable to follow the
instruction by letting them know that they are more capable of doing better than they are aware.

THINK ABOUT THESE PRACTICES…

1. Teachers ensure that the learners function as a caring community.

2. Teachers bring each one’s home culture and language into the shared culture of the
school.
3. Teachers use strategies to build a cohesive community.
4. Teachers let learners accomplish meaningful tasks and to participate in learning
experiences in which they can succeed.
5. Teachers emphasize more cooperation, less competition.

You may choose to write a reflection paper on this and include it in your portfolio
MY ANALYSIS:

1. How did the organization and routines affect the learners’ behavior?
Classroom organization and routines influence learners' behaviors in the sense that they serve as a____
guide for students on how to manage their tasks and also as a guide for them to change their attitude__
because they know their teacher is monitoring their behavior. Routines are especially useful when_____
working with young learners and teens who require additional assistance in regulating their behavior.__

2. What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom organization and
routines? What theories and principles should you have in mind?
When designing the classroom organization and routine, the teacher should consider the effects on the
learners, as well as the outcome of those things, to determine whether or not they are effective.______
Involving students in classroom design not only helps teachers understand their students' learning_____
habits, but it also allows students to express their preferred learning style.________________________

3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners? In
motivating the students? Why were they effective?
Teachers have also been effective in managing student behavior by rewarding positive behaviors_
such as homework completion, attentive listening, and respect for others. Children respond to___
positive reinforcement and learn to model appropriate behavior. When a student begins to stray_
from the planned routine, use nonverbal cues such as hand gestures to remind them of what they
should be doing. To keep the lesson flowing smoothly, avoid using verbal cues._______________

MY REFLECTIONS

1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade/year level do you see
yourself? What routines and procedures would you consider for this level? Why?
I imagine myself having a very organized classroom with each of my student being able to follow_
the set of rules and or guidelines that we put up. I would love to collaboratw with my students__
with creating classroom rules or guidelines.____________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you choose these
rules?
Offer students with an overall view of the class period. Everyone wants to be in charge of their__
day. Realizing what comes next is advantageous not only to you but also to your students.______
Establish Expectations and Consequences Establishing rules in your classroom will foster a______
respectful environment in which students know what to expect from you and vice versa._______

3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?

Students will be able to act appropriately if they feel responsible for their own behavior and_____
understand the expectations that have been set for them. As a result, having the students______
collaborate to create the rules for the classroom helps to prevent misbehavior. Discussing and___
planning this with students at the start of the year instills in them a sense of investment and____
ownership in the code of conduct to which they will be held accountable.____________________
