LPS Calc

This document provides a lightning protection risk assessment calculation for two security buildings, Building-1 and Building-2, at a new MEDGULF facility in Qatar. For each building, it calculates the risks of loss of human life and loss of service, and outlines the protection system design needed to ensure the risks are tolerable. This includes installing air terminals and down conductors, surge protection devices on power and telecom lines, and equipotential bonding. Manual fire extinguishing is needed inside and no protection outside. Dimensions, occupancy and other parameters are provided to inform the risk assessment.

Case notes: To perform the risk management report for protection against lightning, we have considered
parameters based on the given drawings and some assumed values. Any changes to this
could make a difference to the protection level:

1. Thunderstorm days per year are 10 days as per the isokeraunic map.
2. Service density underground is considered as per suburban development.
3. Shield at structure boundary is conductive frame with non-conductive cladding.
4. The structure surroundings are considered to be similar in height.
5. Dimensions of the structure are 5 x 3 x 5.1 (L x W x H) in meters.
6. The length of the service lines from the Transformer LV side to MDB is considered to be
550 mts.
7. No. of zones considered for this structure is two zones.
8. Type of floor is ceramic/concrete.
9. Risk of fire is ordinary (400M.J/m2 - 800 M.J/m2)
10. Fire protection system is manual.
11. The panic level in the structure is low.
12. No. of occupants in this structure is considered to be 2 persons.

The following primary risks and their relevant tolerable risks have been taken into consideration as part of this risk
management calculation

R1 3.372E-07 Risk of loss of human life in the structure.

The tolerable risk of 1E-05 is not exceeded based on the application of the
protection measures listed below.

R2 2.9091E-06 Risk of loss of service to the public in the structure

The tolerable risk of 0.0001 is not exceeded based on the application of the
protection measures listed below.

Lightning protection level (LPL) IV

Design Implementation based on BS EN 62305 part-3 Edition-2

1. Air termination using 25x3mm copper tape (TC030/50) with DC clip

(CP210) installed at every 1 meter interval and square tape clamps
(CT105-H) installed at every joints / nodes to form a grid of 20x20m to form
the part of the Faraday’s cage at the roof level.
2. 25x3mm copper tape (TC030/50) to be used as down conductors which
can be terminated to the earth directly using individual earth pits (PT005) in
the ground floor.
3. Down conductor should be spaced at 20 meters apart (maximum) around
the periphery of the building.
4. Using protective angle method, air rods of suitable height are proposed for
lightning protection of exposed mechanical equipment or the areas where
tape cannot be installed.
5. Main incomer of MDB should be provided with the Type 1+2 SPD
(ESP415/T1/12.5/TNS).
6. Power feeding the roof mounted equipment should have Type 1+2 SPD
(ESP415/T1/12.5/TNS).
7. All critical equipment power feeding FDB, MCC should be protected with
low let through voltage over voltage Type 2+3 SPD (ESP415CD40).
8. Potential equalization of the extraneous metallic elements should be taken
care.
9. Mandatory requirement to have test link to test the resistance of the overall
system above the earth termination to always be less than 0.2Ω resistance.
10. The overall resistance to earth value should be less than 10Ω.
