Dear Students,
Sub: Your Course of Study - General Studies (GS), 2022 - 2023 - Reg.,
As per the scheme of studies recommended by CBSE the school has to teach and
expose students to General Studies an important subject in the set of subjects that are
to be internally evaluated by the school and reported to CBSE, who will in turn need
to publish the individual student’s achievement in terms of grade reported in 9 point
scale - A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, D1, D2 and E. There are 5 areas of study the CBSE
recommends the students to study and to gain the expected knowledge. They are:
 Science and Technology.
 International Understanding.
 Information and Technology Industry.
 Food and Hotel Industry.
 Protection of Environment.
Students can choose any one theme and work on the Project topic as guided in the
theme.
THEME 1: SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Humankind has constantly sought to innovate to make life more comfortable. Almost
every aspect of our life today is touched by Science in one way or the other. It is
pertinent that we are able to identify and appreciate the varied applications of Science
in our daily lives. Whether it was learning to domesticate animals rather than hunt, or
inventing the wheel, we have sought to better our lives through scientific inventions
and discoveries. These changes have impacted modern technology the most.
Objectives of the theme:
 Highlight Science as a necessary part of our everyday life.
 Explore emerging technologies.
 Analyze the impact of Science and emerging technologies on our lives.
Expected Content:
 Application of Science in everyday life and identifying role of Science in daily
activities e.g. cooking, communication, transportation etc. Improving life
through knowledge of Science.
 Emerging technologies - Green technology, Mechatronics, Nanotechnology,
Biotechnology…
 Science and Technology in the Social context: Discussion on Uses and Misuses
of technology (in healthcare, agriculture, warfare, changing lifestyle etc.)
Assistive technology for the differently abled.

 Review, Conclusion and Bibliography.
Students shall prepare a project where innovative models based on emerging
technologies can be explained, connecting the expected content for the Theme.
Students can enumerate ways in which Science and technology had changed human
lives and life style.
THEME 2: INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING
The significance of international understanding and cooperation are of paramount
importance. Rapid advances in technology have remarkably connected the world and
the boundaries between global and local, seem to be fading away. In such a scenario,
maintaining peace and harmony among nations is of paramount significance.
International organizations, like the United Nations, provide a platform to different
nations to negotiate and reach common ground on various unsettled issues. Today,
awareness about various concerns related to international understanding is necessary
to become a responsible global citizen.
Objectives of the theme:
 Acquaint the students with the need, scope and importance of International
understanding.
 Elaborate the structure, types and functions of different International
organizations working for international harmony.
 Outline the importance of human rights with special reference to women and
children.
 Create awareness about the importance of their rights and duties towards clean
environment, peace and mutual co - operation.
 Throw light upon how interdependence among countries has assumed added
significance for the survival of humanity.
 Outline the importance of peace and economic co - operation.
Expected Content:
 Meaning of Internationalism and International understanding. Perspective on
Global citizenship.
 Need, scope, dimensions and basic principles of International understanding.
 International organizations and forums working for mutual cooperation and
international understanding.
 Place and role of human rights in International understanding.
 Peace conventions, International co - operation on environment and climate
change.
 Review, Conclusion and Bibliography.
The students may:
 Read selected material, for example, “Education for International
Understanding” by Reuben R. Palm, United Nations brochure on peace keeping.
 Explore the websites of different international organizations, for example,
UNICEF or UNESCO. They may then act as representatives of these
organizations and write down the ongoing projects, policies and mandates of
the chosen organizations.

 Discuss how advances in technology have changed the dynamics of
international understanding.
 Prepare a document on issues concerning women, children, elderly and persons
with special needs in contemporary times.
 Enlist their rights and the corresponding responsibility for each.
THEME 3: INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY.
CLOUD BASED TECHNOLOGY:
Cloud computing is the on-demand availability of computer system resources,
especially data storage (cloud storage) and computing power, without direct active
management by the user.
Expected Content:
 What are the 3 types of cloud computing?
 What are the risks of cloud computing?
 What are the opportunities of cloud computing?
 Reason behind popularity of cloud services.
 5 Obstacles and Opportunities for cloud computing.
 7 security challenges in cloud computing.
 Review, Conclusion and Bibliography.
Student shall work on the Data/ Survey analysis of the above content and present it
in the project.
THEME 4: FOOD AND HOTEL INDUSTRY
In India, development of catering can also be attributed to the legacy left by people
belonging to different cultures and ethnic groups who have ruled her. With respect to
the catering, hospitality, safety, trends and challenges in India, students are expected
to work on any one of the specific area of interest.
FOOD SAFETY IN HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY
Expected Content:
 Various hazards related to food.
 Food handling methods and preparation.
 Governmental and Non- governmental organization for safety standards.
 Food safety standards and certification.
 Methods to prevent food contamination and food borne illness.
CURRENT TRENDS IN HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY
Expected content:
 Accessibility to modern hospitality services.
 Increased emphasis on Health and Well-being.
 Need for seamless technology.
 Sustainability is the future for Hotel.
 Hospitality professionals need to think globally.
 Review, Conclusion and Bibliography.

Students can either choose Food Safety or Current Trends in Hospitality Industry and
work upon the expected content in detail and present the project with relevant survey
or data that supports the project content.
THEME 5: PROTECTION OF ENVIRONMENT
The forces of nature make existence a demanding and uncertain adventure but Earth
has provided the conditions essential to life’s evolution. The protection of Earth’s
vitality, diversity and beauty is a sacred trust.”
Expected Content:
 Natural resources - Renewable and Nonrenewable.
 Factors causing environmental pollution and degradation.
 Understanding sustainable development.
 Strategies for environmental conservation.
 Lifestyle changes for environmental protection generating less waste
environment friendly transportation - Recycle - Reduce - Reuse - Refuse - Renew
– Recover.
 Review, Conclusion and Bibliography.
Students shall make presentations on initiatives and conservation movements made
by individuals and organizations along with the expected content in the project.

TECHNICAL EXPECTATIONS COMMON FOR THE TOPICS.


 The Project content should be for a minimum of 1500 words.
 Should be original and should not be a downloaded material.
 Should have Introduction, Study and Survey referring and covering all aspects
of each topic.
 The content (rough draft) should be submitted as black and white copy in A4
Sheets as a file on or before Wednesday, the 12th of October 2022.

 The Project should be typed with one and a half space and not hand written.
 Index for the article should be provided.
 Bibliography should be included at the end.
 Students are informed that the deadline given should be strictly followed and
the rough draft of the project shall be submitted on 12th of October 2022.
The final checked project shall be submitted on 31st of October 2022.

The school will maintain Cumulative Records on each student’s internal works and
the assessed scores and grades. The work of students will be retained as evidences
for internal assessment. The Evaluation and Assessment on your work will be
worked out, shared and reported as Internally Assessed Grades, which will be
reflected as Internal Assessment Grade in the individual student’s Class XI Annual
Mark Card, April 2023.
