DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY
SWOT ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

Quality of Education
De La Salle University has received numerous recognition and accreditation from
various local and international institutions. Some of these include CHED, naming 14 academic
programs as Centers of Excellence and 5 academic programs as Centers of Development. All
DLSU programs are certified to be modern and rooted to the One Lasalle Mission as well as
focused on producing an outcomes-based education.
Reputation
De La Salle University, being one of the Top 4 universities in the Philippines, continues
to provide optimal quality learning experience to its students. Furthermore, external evaluation
form renowned Philippine agencies such as PAASCU, AUN QA, and FAAP for demonstrating
the highest standards of instructional, research, and community engagements. DLSU is also
among the top higher education institutions worldwide and the first university in the SEA to
achieve Quality Mark at the Institutional Level from the ASEAN University Network.

Trimestral Academic Year

DLSU is one of the few universities that offer a trimestral academic program in the
country.. This means that students may be able to finish their studies at a shorter amount of
time when compared to other universities around Manila. This is a strong competitive advantage
that students consider when choosing a university.

WEAKNESSES

High Matriculation
Compared to other universities around Manila, DLSU has relatively expensive education
costs with an average of 170,000 pesos a year. The high tuition fees may discourage students
from even thinking about enrolling at the university. However, scholarship grants are still given
and are readily available for applicants.

Campus Server/ Internet Problems

Though the exclusive internet connection provided by the administration is very helpful
for students and faculty alike when engaging in online and in-person classes, it still isn't
flawless. There are still moments that cause the connections to fluctuate which may be due to
the volume of students on campus. This is a particular aspect that the university needs to
address as the methods of learning are continuously evolving and becoming digitalized.

Aging Facilities
Established on June 16, 1911, DLSU still stands at 111 years old. Some buildings, like
the La Salle hall, we constructed and completed decades ago. Though the building’s old age
may compromise the integrity of the building, the administration addresses this by constantly
renovating and reconstructing the building and its foundation to ensure the safety of the
students. At the same time, the university continues to construct new buildings, such as the
Henry Sy Building, to cater to the needs of the unending need of the students.

OPPORTUNITIES

Digitalization / Adaptiveness to New Technology

DLSU has always been a leader in technological innovation. The school’s capability to
administer the university-wide digital transformation has proved to be beneficial, especially
during the time of COVID. In the time of the digital age, the incorporation of the technology in
the learning process for current and future students will be vital in ensuring efficiency and
effectiveness. This would have a significant impact on the Technological Force.

Linkages to International Organizations

Along with the positive reputation DLSU maintains internationally, connections with
international organizations and institutions strengthens itself. These contacts with various
entities would be a great opportunity for the students to enter the international scene and make
it easier for them to share their academic achievements as well as meet opportunities from
other countries. This would have a significant impact on the Demographic Force.

Positive Public Perception

Public perception is something that all institutions take care of. The ongoing perception
of the university which is being part of the “BIG 4”, as well as the school’s academic integrity,
opens up a lot of opportunities for its students. This may be rooted in the university’s active
participation in the community. This has a significant impact on the Socio-cultural Force.

THREATS

Academic Competition
The number of competition among higher education institutions is continuously
increasing throughout the years. This means that students are now faced with more academic
options when choosing a university. This may have an impact on the amount of students
enrolling as well as the revenue generated of the university. This has a significant impact on the
Economic Force.

Economic Uncertainty
In recent months, The Philippines has faced economic recession and is still troubled with
financial uncertainty in the near future. As the COVID 19 virus is still at large and the inflation
rate continues to soar, the economic status of the country would affect not only the private
citizens but also the big firms and institutions like DLSU. This would most likely leave a
significant impact on the university’s financial status and the student's power to pay tuition. This
also has a significant impact on the Economic Force.

Geographical Location (in terms of Metro Manila Crime Rate)

Malate, Manila isn’t necessarily the safest place in the Metro. Although the crime rates in
Manila recently decreased, there is still a substantial amount of crimes being done, especially
around Taft Avenue. Furthermore, unlike other BIG 4 universities who have secure geographical
locations, the campus would sometimes demand students to leave school grounds as some
buildings are located outside school premises. The university addresses these concerns by
hiring a number of security guards in the area. This has a significant effect on the Demographic
Force.
