evaporation, filtration, sieving and using magnet.

DAY 6
PROCESS OF SEPARATING MIXTURE THROUGH SIEVING AND USE OF MAGNETS

Brief Introduction:

Some components of mixture can be separated by sieving or by the use of

magnets. Filtration is a technique in which an insoluble solid is separated from a liquid. It
uses a filter paper to separate solid components from a liquid. Filtration is good in
separating an insoluble solid from a liquid.

Objective:

 Investigate the process of separating mixture through sieving and use

of magnets.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concepts

Use of Magnets

Mixtures of metals and nonmetals could be separated using a magnet. Metals are
attracted to the magnets while nonmetals are not. Magnet is good in separating metals
from nonmetals like, sulfur powder and iron filing.
Use of Sieving

Mixture with big and fine components can be separated by sieving. It involves
using a strainer or a big screen to separate the components of solid mixture. Strainer
allows only the fine particles through it and prevents the larger ones, like fine sand and
rocks in the mixture of gravel and sand.

DAY 7 AND 8

PROCESS OF SEPARATING MIXTURE THROUGH FLOTATION AND PICKING

Brief Introduction:
A mixture is made when you combine two substances in such a way that no
new products formed between the components and you can separate them again. There
are many ways of separating components of mixture. Heterogeneous mixtures can be
separated by picking and flotation

Objective

 Investigate the process of separating mixture through flotation and picking

Let’s Recall (Review)

Arrange the jumble letters to get the correct answer. Write the correct answer on
the answer sheet.

____________1. ERIMXUT- when two or more materials or substances are mixed

together.

____________2. TRAONITLIF– technique used to separate insoluble solid from a liquid.

____________3. TIONRAPOEVA – technique used to separate soluble solid from a

liquid.

____________4. CANTIONTADE – technique used in separating less-dense substance

from a denser one.

____________5. NETSMAG FO ESU – used to separate mixture of metals and non-

metals.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Flotation is a way of separating mixtures. It is used to

separate substances by whether they float or sink.

sawdust

sand
Sawdust and sand are stirred into water, the sawdust floats and the sand sinks,
because the sawdust is less dense than the water and the sand is denser than the water.
Picking is a technique used in separating the solid component of a heterogeneous
mixture. The components of the mixture is big enough to be seen and picked up by
hands. When you separate seeds and sand from milled rice, you used your bare hands

Brief Introduction:

Components of mixture can be separated by using some techniques. One of

the techniques are distillation. Distillation is a separation technique based on the
differences of boiling point of the substances involved.

Objective

 Investigate the process of separating mixture through simple

distillation

Flotation is a way of separating mixtures. It is used to separate substances by

whether they float or sink. Picking is a technique used in separating the solid component
of a heterogeneous mixture. The components of the mixture is big enough to be seen and
picked up by hands.

Let’s Recall (Review)

Write whether the mixture can be separated by picking or floatation.
_______1. sawdust and water
_______2. pebbles and broken grains
_______3. oil and soy sauce
_______4. rotten vegetables from basket of vegetables
_______5. green grapes from black grapes.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Distillation is the separation of mixture of liquid based on the physical

property of boiling point. The technique by which a mixture is separated by heating a
solution and condensing. Collected liquid is called distillate.
Let’s Apply

Materials:
stove (Always work with your parent/guardian when using the stove.)
deep cooking pot with sloped lid (transparent lid, if you have one)
ceramic bowl
ceramic coffee cup
sugar solution (about half a liter)
ice
potholder
Directions in the preparation of set up.
1. Make sure that all your materials are clean
2. Place the small ceramic plate in the center of the cooking pot. Depending
on how deep your pot is you can also place a ceramic coffee cup in its
center.
3.Place a ceramic bowl on top of the small plate or coffee cup.
4. Put your pot on the stove.
Procedures:
1. Pour one glass of sugar solution in the pot. (Your small ceramic plate or
ceramic coffee cup will now be standing in the solution)
2. Together with your parent or guardian, turn on the stove to medium heat
and bring the mixture to a boil.
3. Now place the cover on the pot, upside down and, so that the tip of the
sloping lid is facing toward the bowl placed inside the pot.
4. Put ice in the cover of the pot. You might have to replace the ice in the lid
as it melts.
5. Allow the mixture to boil for 15 to 20 minutes, make sure there is enough
sugar solution remains in the bottom of the pot.
6. After 15 to 20 minutes, turn the burner off. Allow the pot to cool for a few
minutes.
7. Wear potholder, lift the bowl off the small ceramic plate or coffee cup and
set it down on a heat-resistant surface.
8. Pour the cooled distillate (the condensed steam), which is now the liquid
inside the small bowl into a glass.

Answer the questions in your answer sheet.

1. What is the taste of the mixture? Why?

2. What do you see once your mixture starts to boil?
3. If you use a transparent lid, what is formed in the lid? Where did the
droplets come from?
4. What happened to the amount of mixture inside the pot?
5. What have you noticed about the empty bowl that you placed under the
lid?
6. Compare the remaining mixture and distillate. How do they differ?
7. What technique of separating mixture is used?

Let’s Analyze

Read and answer the questions in your answer sheet.

1. What if the seawater is the only water in your place, how are you going to
produce drinking water or pure water out of it? Explain briefly (5pts)

DAY10: PROCESS OF SEPARATING MIXTURE THROUGH SIMPLE

CHROMATOGRAPHY
Brief Introduction:
Chromatography is a technique that separates components of mixture based on
the ability of each component to be drawn across the surface of another material. During
the separation, the various components of materials spread in a different speed.
Components that have the strongest attraction with paper travel slowest.

Objective

Investigate the process of separating mixture through simple

chromatography

A mixture is made when you combine two substances in such a way that
no new products formed between the components and you can separate them
again.

Let’s Recall (Review)

Write on your answer sheet the appropriate technique in separating

components of the following mixtures.
_________1. sugar solution
_________2. marbles and rubber band
_________3. oil and soy sauce
_________4. seawater
_________5. green grapes from black grape
Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Chromatography is used to separate components of a solution and identify that

are colored. This technique is used paper chromatography to separate mixture such as
the pigment of an ink and dyes as example. Chromatography is good in separating
dissolved substances that have different colors, such as inks and plant dyes. It works in
separating dyes because some of the colored substances dissolve in liquid better than
others, so they travel further up the paper.

Chromatography is used in hospitals to detect the level of alcohol in the

bloodstream. It is also used in environment agencies to detect the level of pollutants in
the water supply.
Chromatography using filter paper

Let’s Apply

Chalk Chromatography
Materials:
plain chalk (white)
alcohol (isopropyl alcohol or rubbing alcohol)
markers (black, red, blue)
small cup

Procedure:
1.Get a piece of chalk.
2.Using a marker, draw a line around the chalk about 1 to 1.5 cm from the
end.
3.If the marker is a “washable” type, then the inks are water soluble.
4.If the marker contains a permanent-type ink, then an alcohol or alcohol-
water solvent must be used.
5.Stand the chalk in the cup with the end containing the marker line
down. Allow this to remain undisturbed for 15 to 30 minutes.
6.Remove the chalk from the cup. Using a pencil mark the position on
the chalk that the solvent (liquid) has reached. Let the chalk dry
7.Examine the ink from the marker on the chalk. Describe what
happened to the ink.
8.Repeat the procedure using different colors of marker.

Let’s Analyze

Answer the questions in your answer sheet.

1. What colors of marker did you use?

2. Did the ink line move from its original position?
3. Did the ink separate into two or more different colors? Which ones?
4. What colors did the ink separate into? Tell for each color of marker
used.
5. What does this experiment tell you about the inks used?
