Dead and Live Loads

The document discusses examples of calculating dead and live loads on building structures. It provides solutions for determining total dead loads on roof beams, dead load distributions on floor beams and girders, dead loads supported by columns, and live loads supported by floor beams, girders, and columns using tributary area methods and accounting for load reductions. Live and dead loads are calculated based on given structural plans, member weights, floor finishes, and uniform load allowances.

Dead and Live Loads

9-
Example 1
A three-ply asphalt felt and gravel roof over 2-in-thick insulation
board is supported by 18-in-deep precast reinforced concrete
beams with 3-ft-wide flanges (see Figure). If the insulation weighs 3
lb/ft2 and the asphalt roofing weighs 5.5 lb/ft2, determine the total
dead load, per foot of length, each beam must support.

2-2
Example 1 Solution

 Weight of the beam is as follows:

2-3
Example 2
The steel framing plan of a small building is shown. An acoustical board
ceiling, which weighs 1.5 lb/ft2, is by closely spaced supports, and it can
be treated as an additional uniform load on the slab. An additional dead
load allowance of 20 lb/ft2 is assumed. The designer initially estimates
the weight of beams B1 at 30 lb/ft and the 24-ft girders B2 on column
lines 1 and 2 at 50 lb/ft. Establish the magnitude of the dead load
distribution on beam B1 and girder B2.

2-4
Example 2 Solution

 Slab span between lines A and B, and

between B and C. Total dead load applied
per foot to beam B1:

Example 3
Using the tributary area method, compute the floor dead loads supported by
columns A1 and B2 in Figure. The floor system consists of a 6-in-thick
reinforced concrete slab weighing 75 lb/ft2. Allow 15 lb/ft2 for the weight of
floor beams, utilities, and a ceiling suspended from the floor. The precast
exterior wall supported by the perimeter beams weighs 600 lb/ft.

Example 3 Solution
 Total floor dead load is

 Dead load to column A1

is as follows:

 Dead load to column B2

is as follows:

Example 4
For the three-story building shown in Figures a and b, calculate the
design live load supported by (1) floor beam A, (2) girder B, and (3)
the interior column C located at grid 2-B in the first story. Assume a 50
lb/ft2 design live load, Lo, on all floors including the roof.

2-9
Example 4 Solution

 Floor beam A

 Determine if live loads can be reduced:

 Compute the uniform live load per

foot to beam:

 Girder B

Example 4 Solution (continued)
 Column C in the first story. Compute
the tributary area for roof:

 The reduction for roof live load is

 And the reduced roof live load is

 Compute the tributary area for the

remaining two floors:
