Introduction to Futsal
Introduction
Futsal is a variation of football played on a smaller field and usually played indoors. It
came from the Brazilian origin and is played all around the world. Futsal is played between two
teams, each containing five players, one of which is the goalkeeper. It is played on a hard court
surface with lines showing the boundaries. The futsal ball is typically smaller than the regular
football. Futsal requires a high level of ball control and technique to pass the ball in small
spaces and move it strategically down the court.
6
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
1. know the nature and history of Futsal;
2. discuss about the facts of the game;
3. identify the benefits of playing Futsal;
4. develop values of appreciation, discipline and respect; and
5. participate actively in the class discussion.
This module presents the key concepts and knowledge of the game, Futsal. These will equip
you to become knowledgeable, informative and appreciative of the sport.
Teaching Frame
Nature of the Game
Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced small sided football game and team sport that is widely played
across the world and is officially recognized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA)
and Federation of International Football Association (FIFA).
7
The nature of the game places a large emphasis on technical skills and ability in situations of
high pressure and is subsequently an excellent breeding ground for football competencies that can be
translated into the 11-a-side format of the game.
Many of the top world class footballers played Futsal in their youth and credit it with their
foot-balling development; though played in a small playing area - it has helped a lot on a players close
control on the ball and quick pass.
Futsal requires precision, technical skills, quick reflexes and the ability to make split-second
decisions that may be vital to the outcome of the game.
On the health and wellness side of things, immersion in Futsal promotes fitness and general
well-being.
History of Futsal
The origin of Futsal (Five-A-Side Soccer) can be traced back to Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1930
when Juan Carlos Ceriani devised a five-a-side version of soccer for youth competitions in Young
Men's Christian Association (YMCA's). The game is played on basketball-sized courts, both indoors
and outdoors. The game is frequently referred to as Five-A-Side or Mini-Soccer.
Futsal gained rapid popularity throughout South America, particularly in Brazil. The skill
developed in this game is visible in the world-famous style the Brazilians display outdoors on the full-
sized field. Brazil became the Futsal hub of the world. The first International competition of Futsal
took place in 1965. Brazilians repeated as Champions of the sport.
The term Futsal is now the International term used for the game, it was created by Alexander
Para. Mr. Para knowing that having the term "soccer" in its name made it hard to obtain gym from
the school since most schools thought that a soccer ball in a gym would damage their facilities. He
looked for a word like "NIKE" or "KODAK" that would describe the sport and be able to be used in all
languages of the world. Finally, he coined the Spanish and Portuguese word for soccer - "Futbol" or
"Futebol", and the French and Spanish word for indoor - "Salon" or "Sala" and came up with the final
name of "FUTSAL".
Futsal in the Philippines
Futsal in the country remains relatively small, but its community is bursting with passion and
pride for the game. The Philippine Muzang, our very own Futsal Team, has been active in the Asian
Arena, training extensively in order to compete head to head with the fiercest teams around.
Some schools in the Philippines have been quite active in Futsal and competed in friendly
matches this decade. A growing interest in the game in key cities in the country is notable.
8
Facts of the Game
#1 The sport originated in Uruguay in 1930. A local coach in Montevideo developed Futsal
after getting tired of having to cancel outdoor games due to weather conditions. He
moved his players inside the gym for a five-per-side game. Around the same time in
Brazil, small-sided games were popular too. But they were played out in the streets
due to a shortage of stadiums for the many youngsters wanting to play soccer.
#2 Futsal was first played internationally in 1965, Paraguay won the first South American
Cup.
#3 FIFA estimates that around 30 Million people now play Futsal globally.
#4 The first Futsal World Cup Championship was held in 1989 and 47 countries competed.
Brazil won 5 out 8 tournaments.
#5 Futsal was a sport in the youth Olympic Games in 2018 in Argentina. Brazil and
Portugal were the first teams to ever win Olympic Gold in Futsal.
#6 Spain is also a big winner in Futsal. They have won 7 out of 11 International European
Tournaments.
#7 The name "Futsal" is what FIFA labeled the game in 1989 when officially recognizing
the sport. The game was originally known as "futbol sala" in Spanish and "futebol de
salao" in Portuguese, literally meaning indoor soccer or indoor football.
#8 Futsal is played on a smaller field with smaller, heavier ball.
#9 A futsal game is played on a 40 x 20m (800sq.m) court which is nearly twice the size of
a basketball court 28 x 15m (420 sq.m)
#10 Futsal is fast-paced and tiring. No wonder the games are played in 20 minutes/ halves.
Some youth games will even shorten their halves depending on the age of the players.
#11 Futsal has been around ninety years in the sports world.
#12 Futsal is not only on winter sports. Although played indoors, it is played year-round.
9
The Benefits of Playing Futsal:

MODULE 3
FUTSAL - Skills of the Game
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
1. identify the basic Futsal skills;
2. execute the skills by clearly observing and following the proper mechanics and techniques;
3. develop a positive attitude, critical thinking and values towards the skill-learning and
performance; and
4. participate actively in the class discussion/ activities.
The Top Five Basic Futsal Skills for Beginner Players
1. Juggling
Juggling a futsal ball is the pathway to developing the perfect touch. Juggling does not ensure
a pathway to the pros, but the player fluent in juggling crystallizes their ability to flow with the ball
and perfect their touch. Juggling a futsal ball helps a player become comfortable with the ball and
developing their fluidity in a way no other skill can.
23
2. Dribbling
Though it seems obvious, dribbling a futsal ball is a perfect way to turn the game of
futsal from checkers into chess. A player with exceptional dribbling skills has the ability to keep their
eyes up from the ball to think a couple moves ahead and outsmart the opposing team. Dribbling the
ball, like juggling, allows a player the comfort of moving with the ball, not just kicking it around.
3. Passing
Passing the ball is a sensational way to develop a player’s coordination and to develop their
ability to “spread out” on the futsal court. Often, we see too many players bunching up around the
ball (especially at younger ages) and this leads to confusion and a lack of team-coordination. Passing
the ball against the garage door, back of the house, or against the fence in the back is a perfect way
for any young player to get a hold on making clean, crisp passes. Passing the ball opens the doorway
to developing a firm, confident foot at a young age.
4. Body Control
Body control refers to a player’s ability to move their body fluidly to optimize balance and
coordination. Since body control falls under the category of technique rather than physical
fitness, body control refers mostly to correctness of form. Long strides, correct running form, and a
low center of gravity are good indications of good body control.
5. Spatial awareness
Spatial awareness refers to a player’s ability to see space clearly across the entire pitch and
utilize it to their advantage.

FUTSAL DRILLS
These are all basic drills for futsal beginners and provide a good base point to build upon. The
basic futsal drills we will cover to help you in your progression as a futsal player are the following:
1. Two Cone Shuttle
Directions: Set up two cones across one half of the futsal court as demonstrated in the example image.
The goal here is to run between the cones. Player’s shouldn’t cut across the cones and must go around
the cones. This two cone shuttle is basic in nature but is great for getting players used to turning with
and without the ball.
Tips:
Do the drill as fast as you can with and without the ball, then work towards beating your
time.
Use both your weaker and preferred foot when doing the drill with the ball and see if you can
get your weaker foot timing as good as the dominant foot timing.
Run through the drill touching the ball with only the outside of your foot and then again with
only the inside of your foot.
25
2. Cone Weave
Directions: A step up from the two cone shuffle, the cone weave assists players in improving agility
and turning in tight spaces. By helping players move left and right, you can expect to see an
improvement on the futsal court come game day when surrounded by players in tight spaces.
Tips:
Try doing this with both feet to weave in and out of the cones.
Try using your dominant foot only and timing it, then try matching that time with your weaker
foot.
Use only the inside of your foot and then do the same with the the outside of your foot only.
Set a personal best time and then seek to improve upon it weekly.
3. Two Cone Shuffle and Shoot
26
Directions: In this exercise set up two cones a distance apart, what you want to do here is weave
between the two goals and follow it up with a shot on goal.
This is a basic step up from the two cone shuffle and will help you to start thinking of other things
following your weaving between the goals. As there is minimal pressure in this exercise you should be
able to hit the target most times and if you aren’t then you should keep practicing until you are
efficient.
Tips:
Challenge yourself with different scoring methods i.e. shots in the air, shots on the floor
lobbed shots etc. If you get really good aim for the crossbar or goal posts.
Move the cones around the futsal court to ensure you are exposed to different areas.
Focus on areas of the court that don’t feel natural and ensure your weaker foot is given as
much opportunities on the drill as your dominant foot.
4. Cone Weave and Shoot
Directions: Another step up from the cone weave, this drill will require you to weave between a
number of cones before shooting at the futsal goal. This drill will help you come match day as you get
used to weaving around players and moving in tight spaces before shooting at the futsal goal.
Tips:
You can do this drill using both feet, weaker foot only and using only the outside and or inside
of your foot.
Ensure your time your drills so that you have a benchmark to which you can improve upon.
If you have a teammate or friend have them jockey you at the end of the cones to add extra
pressure to the drill.
27
5. Return Pass & Shoot
Directions: In this drill, you’ll need at least one other player and preferably a goalkeeper. If you don’t
have a goalkeeper available then place a cone in the goals with the objective of hitting it with your
shot.
Have your teammate stand near the touchline, right or left it doesn’t matter. Dribble the ball at
speed and pass to your teammate. Your teammate will then play the ball back to you. When the ball is
played back to you take it under control with no more than two touches before shooting at goal.
Tips:
To increase difficulty take the shot first time without breaking stride, this will help you get
comfortable in situations where breaking stride isn’t an option.
Try 5 times on your left foot and 5 times on your right foot, have your teammate swap sides to
ensure you are getting exposure to the ball coming across your body from both sides.
28
6. Penalty Shots
Directions: If you decide on playing futsal for any serious period of time odds are sooner or later you
will be asked to take a penalty. Unlike soccer there are two penalty spots in futsal and it’s important
that you are comfortable with taking penalties from both of them.
You should focus on using medium power with an emphasis on placement to begin with, there’s no
point striking the ball as hard as you can if you can’t accurately place it.
Once you’re comfortable with taking penalties and you can do so with accuracy then consider using
more power as come match day you will need powerful and accurate shots if you want to stand any
chance of beating the goalkeeper.
29
7. Corner Drills
Directions: It’s important that beginners are familiar with all aspect of the futsal court, to ensure that
you are then you’ll need to practice your corner taking.
Corners are important as they offer an attacking advantage when played right and within a teams
tactics and plans. For now though we are just going to focus on the aspect of taking a corner and doing
it with accuracy. Ideally you’ll want a teammate who you can target, but if not don’t worry you can
still carry out this drill on your own. Set up cones around the goal and try to hit them with a corner
cross.
Tips:
Hit the cones all once with ground passes.
Hit the cones with balls played in the air.
Number the cones and hit them in sequential order, then do it backwards.
30
8. Practice Shooting
Directions: While familiarizing yourself with the futsal court, be sure to take some time to practice
free shooting, with or without a goalkeeper.
Your aim here is to become so familiar with the futsal goal and where it is located that you’ll be able to
shoot without looking, well sometimes, and be comfortable with your bearings on the court.
Tips:
Try for placed shots initially with a focus on hitting the back of the net in an area you visualize
Add power once you find your shots are accurate enough
Make sure you try shots across the ground as well as lifted ones
Don’t forget to use both feet evenly
