Case Study of Group A
As a new member of the board of directors for a local bank, Jack Nelson was being
introduced to all the employees in the home office. When he was introduced to Ruth Johnson,
he was curious about her work and asked her what the machine she was using did. Johnson
replied that she really did not know what the machine was called or what it did. She
explained that she had only been working there for 2 months. However, she did know
precisely how to operate the machine. According to her supervisor, she was an excellent
employee.
At one of the branch offices, the supervisor in charge spoke to Nelson confidentially, telling
him that something was wrong, but she didn’t know what. For one thing, she explained,
employee turnover was too high, and no sooner had one employee been put on the job than
another one resigned. With customers to see and loans to be made, she continued, she had
little time to work with the new employees as they came and went.
All branch supervisors hired their own employees without communication with the home
office or other branches. When an opening developed, the supervisor tried to find a suitable
employee to replace the worker who had quit.
After touring the 22 branches and finding similar problems in many of them, Nelson
wondered what the home office should do or what action he should take. The banking firm
generally was regarded as being a well-run institution that had grown from 27 to 191
employees during the past 8 years. The more he thought about the matter, the more puzzled
Nelson became. He couldn’t quite put his finger on the problem, and he didn’t know whether
to report his findings to the president.

branches?

Answers
1. What do you think is causing some of the problems in the bank’s home office and
branches?
For me, employee that not have full of knowledge, employee that do not have suitable
position to replace other employee and turnover employee happen were cause some of
the problems in the bank’s home office and branches. For example, in the study case,
Ruth Johnson did not know the name of the machine and the machine’s function even
though she can operate the machine very well and was an excellent employee. Next,
the bank not recruit a right person for a specific position. Likes, when one of the
employee resigned they cannot make a replace employee because they do not have the
suitable person to replace the worker who had quit. Also they cannot retain their
worker to work with them.
2. Do you think setting up an HR unit in the main office would help?
Yes, of course. When the bank has Human Resources Department in their company,
they know what type of employee that the bank needs and the Human Resources unit
will do a research about it. With the Human Resource department, they will recruit
and select the right person for the specific position in their bank. Before they select
the employee, they must list down all the job description and specification that they
need. So, it will make their job to select easier. They will recruit people that exactly
same or close to their job description and specification. They must do the job
interview to get the employee that they need. On the interview, they will know all
about the interviewer information and they can make a decision to recruit or not.
Next, in this case study had mention about employee turnover was too high. To solve
this problem, Human resource department will help to retain the employee with give
them a reward. The employee also get compensation from their company when
something bad happen to them and they will get benefit such as health care as free
service when they go to clinic or hospital. So, with this reward, compensation and
benefit it will make the employee retain at the company.
