Assignment-1 (Sept2022)

This document outlines an assignment for a system analysis and design course. The assignment requires students to: [1] Introduce and define an information system and provide an example; [2] Select an SDLC methodology and describe its phases; [3] List five benefits of implementing the chosen information system using that methodology. It provides assessment criteria such as introducing the topic, including required contents, organizing the report, and formatting. Students must submit the assignment individually by the deadline to receive marks.

SYSTEM ANALYSIS &

DESIGN
ASSIGNMENT 1

Topic : Introduction to system analysis and design

Type of Assessment: Individual Assignment
Weightage: 20% (100 marks)
Due: Week 5
Mode of Submission: Online at eKLAS (https://eklas.msu.edu.my/)
Course Learning Outcomes
CLO1 Justify the major phases of the system development life cycle in order to develop and
implement an information system in an organization. (C2)
CLO2 Explain the process involves in managing an information system project and the requirement
determination process. (C2)

Task
As we know that, Information System (IS) refers to a system of people, data records and activities that process
the data and information in an organization, and it is includes the organization's manual and also the
automated processes. Here all the development of IS are referring to the useful of standard selection of system
development methodology.

There are various types of information systems which successful implementation for the end users, for
example: transaction processing systems, decision support systems, knowledge management systems,
database management systems, registration system, payroll system, inventory system and office information
systems.

System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is a conceptual model which includes policies and procedures for
developing or altering systems throughout their life cycles. It is used in project management that describes
the stages involved in an information system development project, from an initial feasibility study through
maintenance of the completed application. SDLC can apply to technical and non-technical systems. In most
use cases, a system is an IT technology such as hardware and software. Project and program managers typically
take part in SDLC, along with system and software engineers, development teams and end-users.

An effective System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) should result in a high quality system that meets customer
expectations, reaches completion within time and cost evaluations, and works effectively and efficiently in the
current and planned Information Technology infrastructure.

Various SDLC methodologies have been developed to guide the processes involved, including the original SDLC
method, the Waterfall model. Other SDLC models include rapid application development (RAD), joint
application development (JAD), the fountain model, the spiral model, build and fix, and synchronize-and-
stabilize. Another common model today is called Agile software development.

Frequently, several models are combined into a hybrid methodology. Many of these models are shared with
the development of software, such as waterfall or agile. Numerous model frameworks can be adapted to fit
into the development of software.

Page 1
In SDLC, documentation is crucial, regardless of the type of model chosen for any application, and is usually
done in parallel with the development process. Some methods work better for specific kinds of projects, but
in the final analysis, the most crucial factor for the success of a project may be how closely the particular plan
was followed.

Task

1. Introduction - Identify and briefly explain the general concept and definition of Information system
(IS). Then choose ONE (1) type of IS by providing example of any organisation / institution /
department that that is relevant to your programme area (BCS/ BCF/ BGDA/ BICT / BMM / BBI/ etc).
2. SDLC Methodology - Define and elaborate the purpose of selected SDLC methodology suitable to
implement your chosen IS.
3. Illustrate and briefly discuss the phases or cycles involve in that methodology.
4. Describe at least FIVE (5) benefits of that system methodology of your chosen IS implementation.
