Assignment 1 Writing
Information for students:
In order to meet the requirements of English for Academic Purposes 1 all students must write an
opinion essay, further developing ideas and opinions discussed in their presentation.

Problem - Solution Essay


 Your essay is based on the research you conducted in preparation for your presentation
 You will be expected to use your primary research and conduct secondary research
Learning Outcomes:
 Can demonstrate effective academic writing skills
 Can provide a clear description of the problem and provide possible solution supported by
secondary research
 Can incorporate a graph, a table or a pie chart and refer to it accurately when discussing
the problem and its solution
 Can reference quotations appropriately and avoid plagiarism

Word count: 600 words

Date due: First draft due on Monday in week 3

Final essay due on Tuesday in week 4

A well-structured essay must include:

 A cover page clearly stating your name, student ID, title of your essay, your teacher’s name
and date
 An appropriate introduction
 In the body of your essay include:
 Description of the problem
 Explanation of why it needs to be resolved
 One solution, which must be supported by your secondary research (this includes 3
resources e.g. the Internet, journal articles, books etc.)
 An appropriate conclusion in which you summarise the main points
 A reference list following the APA 6th referencing conventions

The mark for each competency represents the level to which these criteria have been fulfilled. The overall mark for this assignment is
determined from the average of the above areas of competency.

Minimum requirements to pass:

 EAP1 exit 5.5: achieve a minimum of grade 2 in at least three competencies and a grade higher than 2 in the remaining competency (first block), and a
minimum grade 2 in two competencies and a grade higher than 2 in the remaining two competencies (second block). This grade represents 20% of the
final mark.
 EAP2 exit 6.0: achieve a minimum of grade 2 in one competency and a grade higher than 2 in the remaining three competencies (first block), and a
minimum grade 3 in all four competencies (second block). This grade represents 20% of the final mark.
 EAP3 exit 6.5: achieve a minimum of grade 3 in at least three competencies and a grade higher than 3 in the remaining competency (first block) and a
minimum grade 3 in at least two competencies and a grade higher than 3 in the remaining two competencies (second block). This grade represents 20%
of the final mark.

Assignment 2 Speaking
Information for students:
In order to meet the requirements of English for Academic Purposes 1 all students must give a
presentation on a researched topic of their interest.

Group Presentation – Problem - Solution


 This is a team assignment focusing on your ability to conduct research and deliver a
presentation outlining the findings
 You will be expected to conduct primary research on a topic of current international
significance or an issue relevant to your field of study
 Primary research will include 10 questions your group created, which you will use to survey a
minimum of 10 people
 You may select one of the following areas to brainstorm a suitable topic:
 Medical problems
 Fitness and health
 Hospitality
 Interior/fashion/communication Design
 Marketing and advertising
Learning Outcomes:
 Can present clearly and in detail on complex subjects, specific to chosen discipline
 Can prepare and conduct a research using simple survey and present findings in a formal
context
 Can take an active part in discussion in academic contexts, accounting for and sustaining views
 Can incorporate a graph/chart and describe it accurately

Length: minimum 8-10 minutes plus 5-8 minutes of questions and discussion

Date due: First draft due on Monday week 4

Final presentations delivered in week 5 on Monday and/or Tuesday

The following components must be included in your presentation:

 An appropriate introduction, body and conclusion


 10-12 slides in the body of your presentation with visual representation of your survey
findings (e.g. graph, table, pie chart etc.)
 Time for questions, comments and feedback from your audience

On the day of your presentation submit a soft copy of your work printed as a handout with 8 slides on
each page and a cover page clearly stating your name, student ID, title of your presentation, your
teacher’s name and date.
