Study on the batch calculation of glass formation
Objectives:
To know about batch calculation
To be able to perform batch calculation on any given scenario
Introduction:
Batch calculation is, as the name suggests, a calculation of the components of each batch during
production. It the basic calculation process that is used regularly in the industries during
production. Through this calculation one can determine the required amount of materials needed
for a certain amount of product’s production.
Glass batch calculation can be very simple as well as very complex depending on the composition
of the materials used in the production process. The raw materials dictate the complexity of the
process as a certain component can be present in multiple raw materials which can result in a very
complex batch calculation process. This is a common occurrence in case of glass production. As
glass contain vast amounts of components and the raw materials used in the production can contain
multiple raw materials. Batch calculation is used find the suitable amount of the materials that will
result in a glass product with the desired properties and appearance.
All batch calculations follow the same procedure. First, determine the weight fraction of each
component required to produce the desired molar composition. Begin by multiplying the mole
fraction of each component by the molecular weight of that component. Next, total these
contributions to determine the molecular weight of the glass, and then divide each individual
contribution by the molecular weight of the glass to determine the weight fraction of each
component. Finally, multiply the weight fraction of each component by the amount of glass to be
produced. The batch weight of any component which decomposes during melting is adjusted by
multiplying the weight fraction of that component by the appropriate gravimetric factor for the raw
material actually used in the batch
A problem as a practical example of batch calculation is given below for better understanding.
Problem:
Calculate the batch weights of each components needed to yield 50 grams of glass for the
following composition 15Na2O- 10 CaO- 75SiO2 . The raw materials to be used are SiO2,
Na2CO3, Al2O3. Indicate the total batch weight, the molecular weight of the glass and the
weight of each component.
Solution:
Molecular weight of the components:
Na2O = 62
CaO = 56
SiO2 = 60
Molecular weight of the glass = 0.15*62 + 0.1*56 + 0.75*6 = 59.9
. ∗
Mole fraction of Na2O = = 0.155
.
. ∗
Mole fraction of CaO = = 0.0935
.
. ∗
Mole fraction of SiO2 = = 0.7513
.
50gm of glass requires, Na2O = 0.155*50 = 7.75 gm
50gm of glass requires, CaO = 0.0935*50 = 4.675 gm
50gm of glass requires, Si2O = 0.7513*50 = 37.565 gm
Na2CO3 yields Na2O = 7.75*1.7 = 13.25 gm
Conclusion:
Batch calculation is an important part for an engineer who is tasked with the production of a certain
material. This should be mastered properly, which is the aim throughout this experiment.
