Lab 7: Static Equilibrium
OBJECTIVES
1. To describe the factors that determine whether two objects will be in equilibrium
2. To predict how changing the position of a mass on a balance will affect the motion of the balance
TORQUES IN EQUILIBRIUM CHALLENGES
● To experiment with torques, we will use the “Balancing Act” simulation available from PhET.
● Visit the simulation at this site. (http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/balancing-act)
● Spend a few minutes experimenting with the “Intro” tab and the “Balance Lab” tab.
● Then complete the two challenges below.
Challenge 1: Find the Unknown Masses
● Proceed to the tab called “Game” and begin with Level 1.
● The table below lists several of the objects you will encounter in the game, each with an unknown mass.
● Complete the table below as you work through the game (you may need to play the game more than once
to encounter all of the items.)
Object Television Yellow Bucket Gray Bucket Trash Can Fire Hydrant Wooden Crate
Mass (kg) 10 kg 5 kg 40 40 60 45
Challenge 2: Perfect Scores
● Beat all four levels of the game earning a perfect score on each level.
● To prove that you have completed this challenge, take a screenshot at the end of each level showing your
final score.
● Paste your screenshots into the table below. (I’ve included a screenshot from Level 1 to show you what
this should look like.)
Level 1 Score Level 2 Score Level 3 Score Level 4 Score
COMPLETING THE LAB
● As proof that you have completed the lab, submit your completed lab document to your instructor’s online
dropbox.
● To earn credit for this lab, return to the course and complete the lab quiz to demonstrate your understanding.
