OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the session, you are expected to:
1. identify factors and prime factors of a given integer
and of a monomial;
2. factor the polynomials with common monomial
factors;
3. factor the polynomials by grouping in terms.

GCF = (a+b)2
What is It
Factoring is the reverse process of getting
the product of any number or algebraic
expression.
If a factor is contained in every term of the
polynomial expression, it is called
common factor.
Steps in Factoring using Common Monomial
1. Determine the greatest numerical common factor
and the variable having the least degree.
2. Divide each term of the given expression by the
common factor (GFC).
3. Rewrite the polynomial as a product of the
common monomial and the remaining factor.
Example 1. Factor 4ax + 2x + 6bx completely.
Prime factors of 4ax == 22 ••22••a a• •x x
4ax + 2x + 6bx Prime factors of 2x ==22• •x x 1
Prime factors of 6bx == 22 • 3 ••b•
x •x b
CMF = 2 • x = 2x
4ax ÷ 2x = 2a
2
2x ÷ 2x = 1
4ax + 2x + 6bx = 2x (2a + 1 + 3b) 3
6bx ÷ 2x = 3b
Example 2. Factor 12ab2 - 4a2b2
Prime factors of 12ab2 ==33••22••22• •a •a b••bb• b
12ab2 - 4a2b2 Prime factors of 4a2b2 == 22 • 2 • a • a•
a•bb••b b
1
CMF = 2 • 2 • a• b • b = 4ab2
12ab2 ÷ 4ab2 = 3
2
-4a2b2 ÷ 4ab2 = -a
12ab2 - 4a2b2 = 4ab2(3-a) 3
Example 3. Factor 12x2y2 - 9x3y2 + 6xy
Prime factors of 12x2y2 = 2 • 22 ••33••x x• •x •x y••yy• y
1
Prime factors of - 9x3y2 = 3 •• 33••xx• •x •x x• •xy••yy • y CMF = 3 • x • y = 3xy
Prime factors of 6xy == 22 ••33• •x x• y• y
12x2y2 ÷ 3xy = 4xy
2
- 9x3y2 ÷ 3xy = -3x2y
6xy ÷ 3xy = 2
3 12x2y2 - 9x3y2 + 6xy = 3xy (4xy - 3x2y + 2)
ACTIVITY 3:
I. Complete the following factorization
a. 24st + 8rs = 8s ( _________________)
b. 2k5t2 + 6k4t3 = 2k4t2 ( _______________)
II. Factor the following completely.
a. 3m2 – 12m4 – 9m = __________________________________
b. -10xy3 – 25x2y5 + 15x4y2 = ____________________________
c. . 5b2a–10b5a+25b4n = _________________________________
What if you are asked to factor the polynomial
x3 + 7x 2 + 2x + 14
Factoring by grouping is used if you
have four or more terms with no common
factor or GCF.
Steps in Factoring by Grouping
1. Rearrange the terms so that the first two terms
and the second two terms have common factor.
2. Remove the common factor to form each pair of
terms.
3. Write the expression as the product of the
common factor and the remaining factor.
Factor 3ab + cd + 3ad + bc
1 3ab + cd + 3ad + bc
(3ab + 3ad) + (cd + bc)
2 3a (b + d) + c (d + b)
3 (b + d) (3a + c)
Factor x3 + 7x2 + 2x + 14
1 x3 + 7x2 + 2x + 14
(x3 + 7x2) + (2x + 14)
2 x2 (x + 7) + 2 (x + 7)
3 (x + 7) (x2 + 2)
Factor 10m3 + 25m – 4m2 – 10
1 10m3 + 25m – 4m2 – 10
(10m3 + 25m) – (4m2 + 10)
2 5m (2m2 + 5) – 2 (2m2 + 5)
3 (2m2 + 5) (5m – 2)
Activity 4
Factor the following completely
1. 2ay + 2az + by + bz
2. 8x2 – 4xy – 6x + 3y
