NAME OF ACTIVITY COMARTS FEST 2014

DATE OCTOBER 03, 2014

VENUE CJC GYMNASIUM

PARTICIPANTS SEM MEMBERS

STUDENTS WITH ENGLISH
CLASSES
TEACHERS

I. Rationale
The Communication Arts Festival is a yearly activity of the SEM
involving all the students of Cor Jesu College with English classes. This
year’s festival was anchored from the theme “Exploring the Wonders of
Communication and Arts.”
The activity started at exactly one in the afternoon. The competition
that were participated by the students are the following: sound
discrimination, spelling, identifying errors, dictocomp, silent reading,
alphabetizing and word building. Every English class was given the chance to
choose their representatives to join the said events. Students will compete to
get to the top20 and be qualified in the second round and then top 10 for the
third round. There were more than ten classes who participate in the
ComArts 2014.
Aside from the nerve-wracking events held that day, plenty of surprises
were also shown by the bests of Cor Jesu. Students from the Division of
Business and Accountancy rendered their entertaining intermission number.
Also, the talented TED students from the Organization of Physical Education
Majors (OPEM) and Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE) showcased their
dancing abilities with grace and poise. Of course, the Society of English
Majors (SEM) proved that they are not just good in English but they also
have the capacity and ability in dancing and singing.
Moreover, the activity will never be successful without the presence of
the students. Even though some don’t have the chance to compete because
there were only limited slots, the students just cheered their classmates and
gave their supports. The teachers who were present at that time were
Madame Maria Venice Sumaljag, Sir Harry Villasor, Sir Rodge Binan, Ms.
Jeopril Jane Pableo and the moderator of the organization, Ms. Donna Marie
Adona.
The activity ended at almost 6 o’clock in the evening with the
announcements of winners. Winners were given medals and tokens for
appreciation. All the participants went home afterwards.

II. Objectives
The Communication Arts Festival 2014 aims to achieve the following
objectives:

1. Promote healthy competition among college students in the events

that chiefly involve writing skills.
2. Encourage students to participate in the school-related activities
and create a community showcases excellence.
3. Instill the importance of the English medium in becoming globally
competitive individuals.

III. Narrative

A prayer song entitled “Hold On” commenced the activity. While

listening to the soulful song, there were students who went emotional
especially the fourth year students. The song tells about a reminder that one
should never give up in whatever he/she is fighting for because that storm
they are facing will end in His time. The fourth year students can relate to
this song because they are currently having a hard time with their thesis and
other subjects.
The prayer song was followed by the singing of the Philippine National
Anthem. It was a different way of having the national anthem because a video
was projected and dramatization was done by some artists depicting the
national heroes of the country. Then goes the Cor Jesu hymn sung gratefully
by the students of the institution.
Aris Joy Porquaido, the very active and spirited SEM President
welcomed the students with an encouraging speech that invited the students
to enjoy the afternoon while learning English. In his welcome address, Mr.
Porquiado highlighted the objectives of the event. Before he left the stage, he
asked the students to continue supporting the yearly activity of the SEM.
Without much further ado, the event continued. The hosts for that day
were the lovely and intelligent third year English major students, Darllah
Kaye Ybanez and Joyce Taboada. They owned the stage with their charm and
brain. The reader of the guidelines was Ms. Thyrza Ocleda.
It was a back-to-back-to-back competition of brains. The events being
competed that time were sound discrimination, spelling, identifying errors,
dictocomp, silent reading, alphabetizing and word building. The brainy
students who participated in all these events answered confidently with
sportsmanship.
To cut the tension of the competition, intermission numbers were given
by selected and requested students of Cor Jesu College. Some of these are
coming from the Division of Business and Accountancy and they called
themselves “Pasmovers”. Upon their dancing, the audience could not help
but laugh and have fun with their presentation. The witty fourth year
Accountancy students drew more laughs because of their funny stunts in the
stage and even their facial expressions while dancing. Other intermission
numbers were given by the OPEM and BPE students who proved that they
really belonged in that program. And to verify that English are not just for
academics, the Society of English major students from first year to third year
gave their intermission numbers as well.
At the end of the program, the winners were declared and were given
tokens and medals. The other students hoorayed because their classmates
won. Others were busy taking selfies with the winners and at the tarpaulin
back drop.
The Society of English Majors members were left in the gym for the
restoration. It was indeed a wonderful experience not just for the participants
but also to the facilitators.
IV. Insights and Reflections
After the activity, the officers and members of the organization came up
with these realizations:
 To turn the event successful, it entails every member’s
cooperation and support to do the task and responsibilities given
to them.
 Planning earlier is the major factor that gives a smooth flow to
the activities.
 Division of labor also contributes to the success of an activity
since through this, the tasks will be divided to the members of
the group thus making the task lighter and easier to accomplish.

V. Areas For Improvements/Challenges

The main challenge for this activity was the dissemination of
information among the English teachers. Some teachers were not informed
ahead of time because of the lack of planning beforehand and as well as the
conflict with other school activities.

VI. Recommendations

It is highly recommended that in the next activities to come, there

should be an earlier planning. Also, teachers of English classes should
participate and do their responsibilities in reminding their students about
this kind of affairs.
