Windows GPT Support Overview

Windows 7 and earlier 32-bit versions do not support booting from GPT partitions, while 64-bit versions allow reading and writing to GPT but require MBR for booting in hybrid configurations. Support for GPT on 32-bit versions is limited to reading and writing, with no boot support. 64-bit versions from Windows XP 64-bit Edition onwards support reading, writing and booting from GPT partitions but still use MBR for booting in hybrid configurations.
