6 LUMS – MoOP&HRD-???
Question 1:
Globalization has increased opportunities for qualified and trained workers in labor scarce
countries; they are in high demand in almost every continent. However, this demand is
interlinked with international economic and political environment. Pakistan is one of the
largest labor exporting countries in the region and its workers’ remittances provide a huge
support to the federal government in the balance of payments and also directly impact
welfare of low income households. However, in recent months, crude oil market is sinking
due to which crude oil price in the international market has dropped from more than
US$100 in 2014 to only US$27 in January 2016. There are strong indications that
international price of crude oil will continue to fall in 2016.
a) Do you see a relationship between international price of crude oil and the demand
for migrant workers in the oil producing countries, especially in the Middle East?
Why or why not?
b) What impact the oil price fall might have on the demand for migrant workers from
non-oil producing countries? Will it lead demand for migrant labor to fall, increase
or remain unchanged. Why or why not?
