This list shows the units of length in the SI system. They range from the largest to the smallest
from left to right. The units starred are the common ones that will be used in this course. The
whole system is based on integrals of ten (10). Any two units that are adjacent to each other are
only ten units apart.
Example 1. Millimeter and centimeter are next to each other. Since millimeter is to the
right of centimeter, it is the smaller unit. It takes 10 millimeters to equal 1 centimeter.
Example 2. Centimeter and millimeter are next to each other. Since centimeter is to the
left of millimeter, it is the larger unit. It takes 0.1 centimeters to equal 1 millimeter.
Example 3. Centimeter and meter are two positions away from each other. Since
centimeter is to the right of meter, it is the smaller unit. It takes 100 centimeters to equal 1
meter.
Example 4. Meter and centimeter are two positions away from each other. Since meter
is to the left of centimeter, it is the larger unit. It takes 0.01 meters to equal 1 centimeter.
