WLAN
License Usage Guide 2 License Introduction

2 License Introduction

Definition
License: A license is an agreement that the supplier and customer arrive at and
authorizes the range and period of using the purchased product (it refers to the
software product in this document). Through the license, the customer also
obtains the services committed by the supplier. A license contains a license file and
a license authorization certificate.

Purpose
After purchasing a product, you can only use basic functions of the product. To use
value-added service features or expand device resources, purchase licenses of
corresponding device functions or resources to meet service requirements.
The license reduces costs for you. You can select the licenses to obtain customized
functions.

License Types
● Depending on purpose, licenses are classified into commercial (COMM)
licenses and non-commercial (DEMO) licenses.
– COMM license
Typically, most licenses purchased according to contracts are permanently
valid and some with a fixed validity period. All purchased licenses are
COMM licenses.
– Temporary license
The temporary license is also known as DEMO license, which is used for
special purposes such as test and trial, and are strictly controlled.
● Depending on authority, licenses are classified into function licenses and
resource licenses:
– Function license
A function license controls the usage of a specific function. To use a
restricted function, obtain authorization for this function first.
– Resource license
A resource license controls the number of available resource items. To use
a resource item, obtain authorization for this resource item first.

WLAN
License Usage Guide 2 License Introduction

You may not select a resource license as the default license is sufficient
for your resources. You can also select one or more resource licenses
based on actual service needs. You can select the same resource license
for multiple times or select multiple types of resource licenses. The
resource quantity is the sum of all resources in all selected resource
licenses.
NOTE

The resource capacity allowed by the licenses you purchased cannot exceed the
maximum capacity of the product. To learn the maximum capacity of the
product, contact Huawei local office.

Characteristics
Licenses are convenient, secure, and fault tolerant.
● Convenience
Installing a license file on a device does not require a device reboot and will
not affect running services.
● Security
Traditional license mechanism binds license files to Equipment Serial Numbers
(ESNs). That is, a license file belongs to only one device. If a license file is
modified manually, the file becomes invalid. This protects the license against
theft.
● DR mechanism
If an accident such as an earthquake happens and rescue is organized, you
can set the status of the license activated by traditional license mechanism to
Emergency. In this status, the resource license does not limit resource usage.
The device provides maximum number of resources to meet service
requirements. The Emergency state can only be used certain times within the
specified period. For details, see 7.13 Other: How Do I Enable the
Emergency State of a License?.

Concepts
● License file: A license file controls the capacity, functions, and validity period
of a software version. It is generated by a dedicated encryption tool based on
the contract signed with Huawei and delivered as an electronic file.
Only one license file can be loaded on a device. If features or resources
provided by a license file are insufficient, you can expand the license capacity
to expand features or resources available on a device. The ESDP automatically
sums up all the license items on a device to generate the total capacity
license file, which simply needs to be re-loaded for use.
● License authorization certificate: Also called license certificate, it records the
product name, entitlement ID (originally called LAC, which is short for License
Authorization Code), customer name, and validation period. The license
authorization certificate is sent to the customer by email or delivered together
with the product in the form of common A4 paper or CD. It specifies the
software authorization range and protects the rights of buyers.
Only a commercial license requires a license certificate.

WLAN
License Usage Guide 2 License Introduction

● ESN: The equipment serial number is a string of characters, which uniquely

identifies a device. It is used to ensure that the license is granted to the
specified device. It is also called the fingerprint of a device.
● LSN: The license serial number uniquely identifies a license file.
● Revocation code: If you run command on a device to revoke a license, you
can obtain a character string, which is the Revocation. You need the
Revocation code when changing the ESNs in the license management system.
After you run command to revoke a license, the license file becomes invalid.
● Grace period: A license file enters the grace period after the expiration date.
Typically, the grace period is 60 days. In the grace period, features in the
license file are still available. However, after the grace period, the features
become unavailable.

WLAN
License Usage Guide 3 Licenses Control Items

3 Licenses Control Items

NOTE

The license control items provided in this manual are for reference only. To obtain the latest
ordering information, contact Huawei WLAN distributors or Huawei local office.

From V200R010C00, the AC6508, AC6507S, and AC6805 models are added.

From V200R019C00, the AirEngine 9700S-S and AirEngine 9700-M models are
added.

From V200R020C00, the AC6605, AC6005, and AC6003 models are no longer
supported.

From V200R020C00, the AirEngine 9700-M1 is added.

From V200R019C10, some AP models support right-to-use (RTU) licenses.

RTU is an authorization mode for selling hardware capabilities in installments,

such as the number of spatial streams, capacity, and ports. An RTU license cannot
be migrated after being bound to a device. As a part of hardware value, RTU
licenses have the same lifecycle and the same entitlement as the hardware. For
example, after applying for RTU licenses in batches, you will obtain an RTU license
package. You need to upload the RTU license package to the AC or AP, and then
load the package to automatically deliver the RTU licenses to the corresponding
APs.

The maximum number of APs allowed to be managed by different AC models is

different. For details, log in to Huawei official website and download the
brochure of the corresponding AC model, or query the specifications using
Specifications Query Tool.

License control items vary depending on AC models. An AC license takes effect

only after being bound to the ESN of a device. After the license is unbound, it can
be migrated to another AC of the same model and be bound to the ESN of the
new AC. From V200R020C00, the licenses for AirEngine series ACs can be migrated
between different models of the same series, including AirEngine 9700 series and
AirEngine 9700S series. For example, the licenses for the AirEngine 9700-M and
AirEngine 9700-M1 in the AirEngine 9700 series can be migrated between each
other. Similarly, the licenses for the AirEngine 9700S-S and upcoming models in
the AirEngine 9700S series can be migrated between each other.

NOTE

● When a function has multiple resource licenses, you can purchase multiple resource
licenses to use accumulated resources. For license resource item accumulation, see How
Are License Resource Items Accumulated?
● The RUs managed by the AC do not occupy the AC's license resources. However, the
total number of managed common APs and RUs cannot exceed the upper limit allowed
by the AC.
● Each AC6800V must load a license for basic software functions. If no such license is
loaded, WLAN functions of the AC6800V cannot be used. The license for basic software

WLAN
License Usage Guide 5 License Management

5.1.1 Obtaining COMM Licenses for New Site Projects

Context
COMM licenses are applicable to commercial deployment with contracts.

Two methods are available for obtaining COMM licenses in new site deployment
scenarios: entitlement activation and password activation. To activate a license
using an entitlement, enter search criteria (such as the contract No., order No.,
and entitlement ID) and based on the search result, activate the entitlement. To
activate a license using a password, obtain the activation password from the
license certificate and activate the license using the password (supported only by
enterprise network products).

Some AC models are sold with licenses. To apply for new licenses for these AC
models, refer to 5.1.2 Obtaining COMM Licenses for Capacity Expansion
Projects. Use either of the following methods to check whether an AC is sold with
a license:
● Log in to the AC, and run the display license command to check license file
information in the system. If License state is displayed Normal, a license file
has been loaded on the AC. (If you have not installed a license, this license is
sold with the AC.)
● Log in to the ESDP system at http://app.huawei.com/isdp. Click
Equipment(Node) Management in the left pane. Enter the AC's ESN in the
Equipment(Node) Name box. Historical license operation records are
displayed. Find the license sold with the AC in the initial license activation
record.

Procedure
Step 1 Obtain the entitlement ID or activation password from the license certificate.
NOTE

● This step is mandatory in password activation. Skip this step if a search criterion other than
the entitlement ID is used in entitlement activation.
● The license certificate is sent to customers by email or delivered with the product in A4
papers or CD-ROMs.

5.1.2 Obtaining COMM Licenses for Capacity Expansion

Projects
Prerequisites
● The entitlement ID (LAC) and capacity expansion contract ID have been
obtained.
● The device ESNs have been obtained.
● The product name and ESN in the contract are the same as those on the live
network.
● The license for capacity expansion is in Ready state.

Context
At a site with a capacity expansion contract, you can directly select the license
entitlement for activation. The ESDP system then automatically combines all
license items on the device to generate an overall license file. Note that the
version of the device must be no earlier than that of onsite products.

5.1.3 Applying for AP RTU Licenses

Prerequisites
● Obtain the contract number.
● Obtain the ESN list of APs.

Context
This method is applicable to scenarios when RTU licenses are purchased for APs.
One RTU license can permanently authorize the enhanced hardware capability for
one AP. If there are a large number of APs, online batch license activation is
recommended to obtain an RTU license package for multiple APs.

Procedure
Step 1 Log in to the ESDP and go to the Online Batch Activation page. Search for the
activation ID based on the contract number and product name (L-WiFi6-RTU).
Export the table that contains the activation ID, enter the ESNs of APs, save the
table, and then import the table.

WLAN
License Usage Guide 5 License Management

The following figure shows the format of the exported table. Enter the ESNs of
APs to bind the APs to RTU activation IDs.

Step 2 After the table is imported, download the RTU license package.
The package contains the RTU license files for each AP. In the AC + Fit AP and
cloud AP scenarios, you can directly load the RTU license package on the AC or
SDN controller to automatically match RTU license files for APs, deliver the files to
the APs, and activate the RTU-authorized capabilities, without the need to
decompress the package.

Context
License migration between devices is required in the following scenarios:

Issue 17 (2020-09-04) Copyright © Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. 45

WLAN
License Usage Guide 5 License Management

● License replacement of a spare part: Typically, a customer buys one more

device, the device has a license, but the license is original. After a device
operates on the network for a period of time, the license of the device may
need to be updated. Therefore, if the device on the network becomes faulty,
you cannot directly replace the device with the spare part. Instead, you need
to perform license replacement of the spare part on the ESDP to make the
spare part obtain the latest license.
For channel partners and end users, contact Huawei technical support
personnel in this scenario.
● ESN change with a revocation code: An incorrect ESN is bound to the license
file, and no record about binding a correct ESN to the license exists on the
ESDP, apply for the license file corresponding to the new device ESN again.
If a license binding record exists in the ESDP system, you need to refer to 5.7
Rolling Back a License to roll back the license file to which an incorrect ESN
is bound.
● ESN change without a revocation code: The ESN of the license file is incorrect
and no revocation code can be obtained for the original license file because of
a misoperation. You need to apply for the license file corresponding to the
correct ESN again.
For channel partners and end users, contact Huawei technical support
personnel in this scenario.
NOTE

The ESN change operation can be performed only on permanent licenses, not on temporary
or fixed-term licenses.
This section describes only procedures for changing the ESN with a revocation code.
RTU licenses for APs cannot be migrated.

Procedure
Step 1 Log in to the ESDP system at http://app.huawei.com/isdp.
Step 2 Choose License Commissioning and Maintenance > ESN Change from the left
navigation tree to enter the ESN Change page.
Step 3 Select With Revocation Code for ESN Change type, enter the revocation code of
the license file in which the ESN needs to be changed, and click Verify.

Step 4 After verifying the revocation code, the system automatically displays device
information of the original ESN. Enter the new ESN to start the ESN change task.
Click Save.

5.7 Rolling Back a License

Context
If an incorrect ESN is bound during the license application stage and records about
binding a correct ESN to the license exist in the ESDP system, you need to change
the status of the license to which an incorrect ESN is bound from active to inactive
and use the correct ESN and the entitlement ID or activation password to
reactivate the license in the ESDP system.

NOTE

Channel partners and end users do not have the permission for license rollback without a
revocation code. If necessary, contact Huawei technical support personnel. This section
describes only procedures for rolling back a license with a revocation code.
You can run the display license revoke-ticket command in any view to obtain the license
revocation code.
RTU licenses for APs cannot be rolled back.

To use AC functions (such as the number of access APs or the use of a function)
that are controlled by a license, apply for a license.

To improve the hardware capability (number of spatial streams) of an AP, you

need to apply for an RTU license.

7.2 License Application: Can Multiple ESNs Be Bound to

N+1 backup ● From V200R006C10 to V200R008C10:

License synchronization between the
master and backup ACs is not
supported.
Apply for and load the license for
each AC separately. Ensure that the
number of APs supported by the

● For V200R009C00 and later versions:
Licenses on master ACs can be
synchronized to the backup AC. The
synchronization, however, is triggered
only when APs go online. Licenses on
the backup AC cannot be
synchronized to master ACs.
You are advised to apply for and load
licenses for the master ACs. The
license will be automatically backed

the backup license.
NOTE
● Only the ESN of the active AC is
required when you apply for a license.
● If a license is loaded on the active AC
before AC backup is configured, the
license will be backed up to the
standby AC.

● For V200R010C00 and later versions, if two or more ACs are deployed, the
centralized license control function can be used. In centralized license control
mode, one AC functions as the license server to manage all license resources,
while the other ACs function as license clients to report local license resources
to the license server. When an AP goes online on an AC, the license server
allocates a license to the AP. When an AP goes offline from an AC, the license
server releases the AP license. Centralized license control achieves unified
management and flexible allocation of licenses on the network, making
license usage easier and more efficient.
The centralized license control function and license backup function are
mutually exclusive. After the centralized license control function is configured,
the license backup function becomes invalid.
Centralized license control applies to various multi-AC networking scenarios
as follows:

Wireless configuration synchronization scenario: include VRRP HSB and
dual-link HSB scenarios. In the VRRP HSB scenario, the two ACs must be both
license servers or license clients. In the dual-link HSB scenario, the local AC
automatically functions as the license client, and the master AC automatically
functions as the license server.
Navi AC scenario: You can specify any AC as the license server and the other

N+1 backup scenario: It is recommended that the backup AC be configured
as the license server and master ACs be configured as license clients.
Scenario where N+1 backup and VRRP HSB are both enabled: The backup
AC with VRRP configured functions as the license server, and uses the VRRP
virtual IP address to communicate with license clients. Master ACs with VRRP

communicate with the license server.

License Synchronization in Scenarios Enabled with Both N+1 Backup and

VRRP HSB
In V200R009C00 and later versions, as shown in Figure 7-1 where N+1 backup
and VRRP HSB are both enabled, AC_1 and AC_1b, and AC_2 and AC_2b form two
VRRP groups to serve as the primary ACs in N+1 backup, and AC_3 and AC_3b
form a VRRP group to serve as the backup AC in N+1 backup. AC_1, AC_2, and
AC_3 are running properly, whose VRRP priorities are higher than those of AC_1b,
AC_2b, and AC_3b, respectively.

AC and synchronizes its local license to AC_3. License resources that are
synchronized from AC_1 to AC_3 enter the aging period (30 days).

For example, assume that there are both 128 license resources loaded on AC_1
and AC_2, 8 license resources loaded on AC_1b and AC_2b, and no license loaded
on AC_3. After license synchronization, the total number of license resources on
each AC is calculated as follows:
● AC_1 and AC_1b: sum of the license resources on AC_1 and AC_1b, that is, 128
+ 8 = 136
● AC_2 and AC_2b: sum of the license resources on AC_2 and AC_2b, that is, 128
+ 8 = 136
● AC_3 and AC_3b: sum of the license resources on AC_1 and AC_2, that is, 128
+ 128 = 256

If AC_1 is faulty, AC_1b becomes the working AC and synchronizes its local 8
license resources to AC_3. The 128 license resources that are synchronized from
AC_1 to AC_3 and AC_1b enter the aging period (30 days).
● During the aging period, the total number of license resources on each AC is
calculated as follows:
– AC_1b: sum of the license resources on AC_1 and AC_1b, that is, 128 + 8
= 136
– AC_3 and AC_3b: sum of the license resources on AC_1, AC_1b, and AC_2,
that is, 8 + 128 + 128 = 264
– The number of license resources on AC_2 and AC_2b remains unchanged.
● If AC_1 does not recover after the aging period, licenses that the ACs have
synchronized from AC_1 automatically become invalid. In this case, the total
number of license resources on each AC is calculated as follows:
– AC_1b: local license resources on AC_b, that is, 8
– AC_3 and AC_3b: sum of the license resources on AC_1b and AC_2, that
is, 8 + 128 = 136
– The number of license resources on AC_2 and AC_2b remains unchanged.

License Capacity Expansion in Backup Scenarios

In a backup scenario, to expand license resources, comply with the license
deployment policy. For license resource accumulation, see 7.8 Other: How Are
License Resource Items Accumulated?.
● For V200R005C10 and earlier versions, apply for and load the new license for
both the active and standby ACs.
● For V200R006C10 and later versions, license synchronization between the
active and standby ACs is supported in dual-link HSB, VRRP HSB, and dual-
link cold backup scenarios. You are advised to apply for and load a new
license for the active AC. Then the license will be synchronized to the standby
AC.
● From V200R006C10 to V200R008C10, in N+1 backup scenarios, apply for and
load a new license for the primary ACs and the backup AC. For V200R009C00
and later versions, in N+1 backup scenarios, apply for and load a new license
for the primary ACs. Then the license will be synchronized to the backup AC.

Calculation for the Total Number of License Resources in Backup Scenarios

Formula for calculating the total number of license resources: Total number of
license resources = Number of local license resources + Number of backup license
resources
● The number of local license resources contains that of resources on the device
before a license is loaded. For example, there are 128 resources on an ACU2
before it loads a license. After the ACU2 loads a license supporting
management of 256 APs, the number of license resources is 384 (128 + 256).
● The number of backup license resources contains that of resources on the
standby AC before a license is loaded.

For example, there are 384 local license resources on an active ACU2 before it
loads a license. The standby ACU2 has no additional license loaded, that is, there
are 128 license resources (default) on the standby ACU2. After license
synchronization is completed, there are both 512 (384 + 128) license resources on
the active and standby ACU2 cards.

NOTE

The total number of available license resource items cannot exceed the maximum number of
resource items supported by an AC.

For the default number of resources before a license is loaded on the AC, see 7.8
Other: How Are License Resource Items Accumulated?.

License Processing Method upon a Fault on the Active AC in Backup

Scenarios
For V200R006C20 and earlier versions, if the active AC fails in a backup scenario,
standby licenses on the standby AC can still be used. However, the licenses
become invalid after the AC is restarted.

From V200R007C10, in dual-link HSB (active/standby mode), VRRP HSB, and dual-
link cold backup scenarios, the backup license on the standby AC enters the 30-
day aging period after the active AC is faulty. The license becomes invalid
automatically after the aging period. If the active AC recovers from the fault
during the aging period, the aging period will expire. If the active AC becomes
faulty again, the backup license re-enters the 30-day aging period.

If the standby AC loads a new license during the aging period, the standby AC can
use both the backup and new licenses. After the 30-day aging period, only the
new license is available for the standby AC.

7.6 License Installation: Do I Need to Activate the

License Again When an AC Is Restarted Due to Power-
Off or Upgrade?
When an AC is restarted due to power-off or upgrade, the license can restore to
the active state automatically, without the need to activate it again.

7.7 Other: When No License Is Loaded, How Many APs

Does an AC Support by Default?
ACs other than the ACU2 allow access of 0 APs by default when no license is
loaded.

An ACU2 allows access of 128 APs by default when no license is loaded.

To allow more APs to go online on the AC, customers need to purchase licenses as
required.

NOTE

Some AC models are sold with licenses. These AC models are loaded with license files before
delivery. Log in to the AC, and run the display license command to check license file
information in the system. If License state is displayed Normal, a license file has been loaded
on the AC.

7.8 Other: How Are License Resource Items

Accumulated?
The number of APs that can access an AC consists of:
● Default number of access APs when no license is loaded
● Number of access APs authorized by a license

An ACU2 allows access of 128 APs by default when no license is loaded. After a
license for 256 APs is loaded, the number of APs that can access an AC is 384 (128
+ 256 = 384). To expand the network capacity, apply for another license
supporting 128 APs. The background system will automatically support the total
number of resources items in the two licenses. After the new license is loaded on
the ACU2, the number of APs that can access the ACU is 512 (384 + 128 = 512).

ACs other than the ACU2 allow access of 0 APs by default when no license is
loaded. After a license for 128 APs is loaded, the number of APs that can access
an AC is 128. To expand the network capacity, apply for another license supporting
128 APs. The background system will automatically support the total number of
resources items in the two licenses. After the new license is loaded on the AC, the
number of APs that can access the AC is 256 (128 + 128 = 256).

NOTE

The total number of available license resource items cannot exceed the maximum number of
resource items supported by an AC.
