2 License Introduction
Definition
License: A license is an agreement that the supplier and customer arrive at and
authorizes the range and period of using the purchased product (it refers to the
software product in this document). Through the license, the customer also
obtains the services committed by the supplier. A license contains a license file and
a license authorization certificate.
Purpose
After purchasing a product, you can only use basic functions of the product. To use
value-added service features or expand device resources, purchase licenses of
corresponding device functions or resources to meet service requirements.
The license reduces costs for you. You can select the licenses to obtain customized
functions.
License Types
● Depending on purpose, licenses are classified into commercial (COMM)
licenses and non-commercial (DEMO) licenses.
– COMM license
Typically, most licenses purchased according to contracts are permanently
valid and some with a fixed validity period. All purchased licenses are
COMM licenses.
– Temporary license
The temporary license is also known as DEMO license, which is used for
special purposes such as test and trial, and are strictly controlled.
● Depending on authority, licenses are classified into function licenses and
resource licenses:
– Function license
A function license controls the usage of a specific function. To use a
restricted function, obtain authorization for this function first.
– Resource license
A resource license controls the number of available resource items. To use
a resource item, obtain authorization for this resource item first.
You may not select a resource license as the default license is sufficient
for your resources. You can also select one or more resource licenses
based on actual service needs. You can select the same resource license
for multiple times or select multiple types of resource licenses. The
resource quantity is the sum of all resources in all selected resource
licenses.
NOTE
The resource capacity allowed by the licenses you purchased cannot exceed the
maximum capacity of the product. To learn the maximum capacity of the
product, contact Huawei local office.
Characteristics
Licenses are convenient, secure, and fault tolerant.
● Convenience
Installing a license file on a device does not require a device reboot and will
not affect running services.
● Security
Traditional license mechanism binds license files to Equipment Serial Numbers
(ESNs). That is, a license file belongs to only one device. If a license file is
modified manually, the file becomes invalid. This protects the license against
theft.
● DR mechanism
If an accident such as an earthquake happens and rescue is organized, you
can set the status of the license activated by traditional license mechanism to
Emergency. In this status, the resource license does not limit resource usage.
The device provides maximum number of resources to meet service
requirements. The Emergency state can only be used certain times within the
specified period. For details, see 7.13 Other: How Do I Enable the
Emergency State of a License?.
Concepts
● License file: A license file controls the capacity, functions, and validity period
of a software version. It is generated by a dedicated encryption tool based on
the contract signed with Huawei and delivered as an electronic file.
Only one license file can be loaded on a device. If features or resources
provided by a license file are insufficient, you can expand the license capacity
to expand features or resources available on a device. The ESDP automatically
sums up all the license items on a device to generate the total capacity
license file, which simply needs to be re-loaded for use.
● License authorization certificate: Also called license certificate, it records the
product name, entitlement ID (originally called LAC, which is short for License
Authorization Code), customer name, and validation period. The license
authorization certificate is sent to the customer by email or delivered together
with the product in the form of common A4 paper or CD. It specifies the
software authorization range and protects the rights of buyers.
Only a commercial license requires a license certificate.
NOTE
The license control items provided in this manual are for reference only. To obtain the latest
ordering information, contact Huawei WLAN distributors or Huawei local office.

NOTE
● When a function has multiple resource licenses, you can purchase multiple resource
licenses to use accumulated resources. For license resource item accumulation, see How
Are License Resource Items Accumulated?
● The RUs managed by the AC do not occupy the AC's license resources. However, the
total number of managed common APs and RUs cannot exceed the upper limit allowed
by the AC.
● Each AC6800V must load a license for basic software functions. If no such license is
loaded, WLAN functions of the AC6800V cannot be used. The license for basic software
functions does not support backup.
This section describes how to use the Info-Finder tool to query detailed
information about license control items of different models.
Figure 4-1 shows the interface of Info-Finder. This tool allows you to query
license control items of different models, including part numbers, control items,
and supported versions.
5 License Management
NOTE
RTU licenses are used to authorize hardware capabilities. An RTU license cannot be
migrated after being bound to a device. Therefore, the RTU license can only be installed
and viewed, but cannot be revoked, migrated, or rolled back.
Two methods are available for obtaining COMM licenses in new site deployment
scenarios: entitlement activation and password activation. To activate a license
using an entitlement, enter search criteria (such as the contract No., order No.,
and entitlement ID) and based on the search result, activate the entitlement. To
activate a license using a password, obtain the activation password from the
license certificate and activate the license using the password (supported only by
enterprise network products).
Some AC models are sold with licenses. To apply for new licenses for these AC
models, refer to 5.1.2 Obtaining COMM Licenses for Capacity Expansion
Projects. Use either of the following methods to check whether an AC is sold with
a license:
● Log in to the AC, and run the display license command to check license file
information in the system. If License state is displayed Normal, a license file
has been loaded on the AC. (If you have not installed a license, this license is
sold with the AC.)
● Log in to the ESDP system at http://app.huawei.com/isdp. Click
Equipment(Node) Management in the left pane. Enter the AC's ESN in the
Equipment(Node) Name box. Historical license operation records are
displayed. Find the license sold with the AC in the initial license activation
record.
Procedure
Step 1 Obtain the entitlement ID or activation password from the license certificate.
NOTE
● This step is mandatory in password activation. Skip this step if a search criterion other than
the entitlement ID is used in entitlement activation.
● The license certificate is sent to customers by email or delivered with the product in A4
papers or CD-ROMs.
Step 2 Log in to the device and run the display esn command in any view to obtain the
ESN of the device.
Step 3 Log in to the ESDP system at http://app.huawei.com/isdp.
Step 4 Activate the license.
● Entitlement activation.
a. Choose License Activation > Entitlement Activation in the navigation
tree on the left. The entitlement activation page is displayed.
b. Select one or more entitlements.
i. Set the search criteria and click Search & Refresh. For example, you

Context
This method is applicable to scenarios when RTU licenses are purchased for APs.
One RTU license can permanently authorize the enhanced hardware capability for
one AP. If there are a large number of APs, online batch license activation is
recommended to obtain an RTU license package for multiple APs.
Procedure
Step 1 Log in to the ESDP and go to the Online Batch Activation page. Search for the
activation ID based on the contract number and product name (L-WiFi6-RTU).
Export the table that contains the activation ID, enter the ESNs of APs, save the
table, and then import the table.
The following figure shows the format of the exported table. Enter the ESNs of
APs to bind the APs to RTU activation IDs.
Step 2 After the table is imported, download the RTU license package.
The package contains the RTU license files for each AP. In the AC + Fit AP and
cloud AP scenarios, you can directly load the RTU license package on the AC or
SDN controller to automatically match RTU license files for APs, deliver the files to
the APs, and activate the RTU-authorized capabilities, without the need to
decompress the package.
Step 3 Activate the RTU licenses of APs. The operation method varies according to the AP
working mode. For details, see 5.2 Installing Licenses.

Prerequisites
The target license file or ESN of the target device has been known.
Context
When the software version of a device is upgraded, you need to upgrade the
license file so that the product version in the license file is the same as the
software version of the device. Otherwise, the license file cannot be loaded in the
new version of software.
NOTE
Some devices or versions do not verify license files for backward compatibility. In this case, the
old license can be loaded after the software is upgraded. If the license control items of the two
versions are different, you must upgrade the license to eliminate the difference.
RTU licenses for APs cannot be upgraded or downgraded.
Procedure
Step 1 Log in to Huawei ESDP system at http://app.huawei.com/isdp.
Step 2 Choose License Commissioning and Maintenance > Version Change in the
navigation tree to enter the Version Change page.
Step 3 Read through the content in Notice, select I have read and agree to the above,
and click Next.
You can also search for and download the license file to be upgraded in the ESDP system based
on the device ESN. The navigation path is Equipment(Node) Management. If the local license
file is different from that in the ESDP system, the license file in the ESDP system applies.
Step 5 Select the current product name or version and the target product name or
version.
Select the right product and version to ensure that the product and version are the
same as those of the target device. Otherwise, the license file cannot be loaded,
and services will be interrupted.
NOTE
In an upgrade operation, the target version is later than the current version; in a downgrade
operation, the target version is earlier than the current version.
Step 7 You can download the new license file after the version is successfully changed.
NOTE
You can search for and download the new license file on the Equipment(Node) Management
page based on the device ESN.
----End
Prerequisites
The license has been invalidated on the device and the license code has been
obtained.
NOTE
Context
If a license fails to be rolled back, fails to be migrated between devices, or fails to
be merged with another license, you need to restore a license file that is available
on the device. However, because the license has been revoked on the device, there
is no license file available on the device. In this case, perform the following
operations to generate a new license file.
The capacity, functionality, product, version, and ESN information in the new
license file is the same as that in the invalidated license file, and only the LSN is
different. Users are unaware of the difference, and services are not adversely
affected.
Only permanent licenses can be restored. Temporary licenses and fix-term licenses
cannot be restored.
Procedure
Step 1 Log in to the ESDP system at http://app.huawei.com/isdp.
Step 2 Choose License Commissioning and Maintenance > Revoked License Recovery
in the navigation tree to access the Revoked License Recovery page.
Step 3 Enter the code of the invalidated license and submit it for verification.
Step 4 After the verification succeeds, the device name, product, version, ESN, and LSN
information are displayed. If the information is correct, click Submit.

VRRP HSB
N+1 backup Apply for and load the license for each
AC separately. Ensure that the number of
APs supported by the license of the
backup AC is not less than that
supported by the license of any master
AC. In this way, if any master AC fails, all
APs on the faulty master AC can be
switched to the backup AC.
● For V200R010C00 and later versions, if two or more ACs are deployed, the
centralized license control function can be used. In centralized license control
mode, one AC functions as the license server to manage all license resources,
while the other ACs function as license clients to report local license resources
to the license server. When an AP goes online on an AC, the license server
allocates a license to the AP. When an AP goes offline from an AC, the license
server releases the AP license. Centralized license control achieves unified
management and flexible allocation of licenses on the network, making
license usage easier and more efficient.
The centralized license control function and license backup function are
mutually exclusive. After the centralized license control function is configured,
the license backup function becomes invalid.
Centralized license control applies to various multi-AC networking scenarios
as follows:
Figure 7-1 Networking enabled with both N+1 backup and VRRP HSB
In normal cases, licenses on AC_1 and AC_2 can be synchronized to AC_3, but
those on AC_1b and AC_2b cannot. If AC_1 is faulty, AC_1b becomes the working
AC and synchronizes its local license to AC_3. License resources that are
synchronized from AC_1 to AC_3 enter the aging period (30 days).
For example, assume that there are both 128 license resources loaded on AC_1
and AC_2, 8 license resources loaded on AC_1b and AC_2b, and no license loaded
on AC_3. After license synchronization, the total number of license resources on
each AC is calculated as follows:
● AC_1 and AC_1b: sum of the license resources on AC_1 and AC_1b, that is, 128
+ 8 = 136
● AC_2 and AC_2b: sum of the license resources on AC_2 and AC_2b, that is, 128
+ 8 = 136
● AC_3 and AC_3b: sum of the license resources on AC_1 and AC_2, that is, 128
+ 128 = 256
If AC_1 is faulty, AC_1b becomes the working AC and synchronizes its local 8
license resources to AC_3. The 128 license resources that are synchronized from
AC_1 to AC_3 and AC_1b enter the aging period (30 days).
● During the aging period, the total number of license resources on each AC is
calculated as follows:
– AC_1b: sum of the license resources on AC_1 and AC_1b, that is, 128 + 8
= 136
– AC_3 and AC_3b: sum of the license resources on AC_1, AC_1b, and AC_2,
that is, 8 + 128 + 128 = 264
– The number of license resources on AC_2 and AC_2b remains unchanged.
● If AC_1 does not recover after the aging period, licenses that the ACs have
synchronized from AC_1 automatically become invalid. In this case, the total
number of license resources on each AC is calculated as follows:
– AC_1b: local license resources on AC_b, that is, 8
– AC_3 and AC_3b: sum of the license resources on AC_1b and AC_2, that
is, 8 + 128 = 136
– The number of license resources on AC_2 and AC_2b remains unchanged.
For example, there are 384 local license resources on an active ACU2 before it
loads a license. The standby ACU2 has no additional license loaded, that is, there
are 128 license resources (default) on the standby ACU2. After license
synchronization is completed, there are both 512 (384 + 128) license resources on
the active and standby ACU2 cards.
NOTE
The total number of available license resource items cannot exceed the maximum number of
resource items supported by an AC.
For the default number of resources before a license is loaded on the AC, see 7.8
Other: How Are License Resource Items Accumulated?.
From V200R007C10, in dual-link HSB (active/standby mode), VRRP HSB, and dual-
link cold backup scenarios, the backup license on the standby AC enters the 30-
day aging period after the active AC is faulty. The license becomes invalid
automatically after the aging period. If the active AC recovers from the fault
during the aging period, the aging period will expire. If the active AC becomes
faulty again, the backup license re-enters the 30-day aging period.
If the standby AC loads a new license during the aging period, the standby AC can
use both the backup and new licenses. After the 30-day aging period, only the
new license is available for the standby AC.
To allow more APs to go online on the AC, customers need to purchase licenses as
required.
NOTE
Some AC models are sold with licenses. These AC models are loaded with license files before
delivery. Log in to the AC, and run the display license command to check license file
information in the system. If License state is displayed Normal, a license file has been loaded
on the AC.
An ACU2 allows access of 128 APs by default when no license is loaded. After a
license for 256 APs is loaded, the number of APs that can access an AC is 384 (128
+ 256 = 384). To expand the network capacity, apply for another license
supporting 128 APs. The background system will automatically support the total
number of resources items in the two licenses. After the new license is loaded on
the ACU2, the number of APs that can access the ACU is 512 (384 + 128 = 512).
ACs other than the ACU2 allow access of 0 APs by default when no license is
loaded. After a license for 128 APs is loaded, the number of APs that can access
an AC is 128. To expand the network capacity, apply for another license supporting
128 APs. The background system will automatically support the total number of
resources items in the two licenses. After the new license is loaded on the AC, the
number of APs that can access the AC is 256 (128 + 128 = 256).
NOTE
The total number of available license resource items cannot exceed the maximum number of
resource items supported by an AC.
Features controlled by this license will be unavailable immediately after the trial
period expires. Therefore, you need to apply for a new license and activate the
license before the expiration date of the current license.
COMM licenses on the live network are supposed to stay in Normal state. If the
license state of the device is Demo or Trial, apply for a COMM license before the
expiration date.
