Figure 2. Direction of arrows after flipping the polarity.
Figure 3. Moving the Magnet with 100% Magnetic Field
Figure 4. Moving the Magnet with 20% Magnetic Field.
Figure 5. Figure after clicking Show Planet and flipping Polarity.
Observations:
There are two colors, red and white, which are simply opposite poles that attract each other.
Moving the magnets will show attraction to one side and to another..
Guide Questions:
1. What does the color of the arrow, magnet and compass represent?
Since magnetic fields do not have charge, red represents the north pole and white represents
the south pole.
2. How does the polarity of the magnet affect the magnetic field and the compass?
The magnetic field and the compass bend over to the sides and have a reverse polarity,
meaning that the polarity of the magnet provides bipolar exposure (north and south).
3. Observe the compass as you move it along. What happens on the compass?
As I move the compass along the field, the opposite color attracts, the north pole (red) spins
and changes its direction to point at the south pole (white) and vice versa.
4. Click “Show Planet”. Record your observation on the differences once you have shown the
planet Earth and flipped the polarity.
Clicking “Show Planet” reveals the Earth and the magnet’s pointing up and down, specifically
the South pole (white) upwards and the North Pole (red) downwards. Flipping the polarity, just
like a regular magnet, flips the direction of the arrows as the 2 poles of the planet were flipped.
Conclusion:
Every magnet has a north and a south pole. In simple terms the side of the magnet attracted to
the South Pole is the North Pole of the magnet and the side of the magnet attracted to the
North Pole is the South Pole of the magnet.
