UNDERSTANDING CULTURE, SOCIETY, AND POLITICS:
SOME KEY OBSERVATIONS

CULTURE, SOCIETY, AND POLITICS AS CONCEPTUAL TOOLS - Culture, society, and politics
are concepts. They exist in the realm of ideas and thoughts. Concepts are created and have
been used a firm grip of phenomenon.

Cultural Function. Buildings, furniture, clothes and the like form part of the country’s
material culture, while music, dance, and language, which is incorporated in oral and written
literature and drama, form part of its non-material culture.

Let’s visit a bit of history about natural science and religion.

Galileo Galilei - Craters and mountains on the Moon. The Moon's surface was not smooth
and perfect as received wisdom had claimed but rough, with mountains and craters whose
shadows changed with the position of the Sun.
Nicolaus Copernicus - was a Polish astronomer and mathematician known as the father of
modern astronomy. He was the first European scientist to propose that Earth and other
planets revolve around the sun, the heliocentric theory of the solar system.
Isaac Newton – The law of motion, it was English mathematician, physicist, astronomer,
alchemist, theologian, and author. He was the key figure of philosophical revolution known
as enlightenment. He invented calculus.
Charles Darwin - Was English naturalist, biologist, and geologist. He developed and
proposed a theory about evolution.
He disagreed with the Church's policy on Indulgences (paying money to the Church to obtain
forgiveness for sins). Only Catholic priests were allowed to read, interpret, and teach the
Bible.
Martin Luther - was one of the most important religious thinkers of his millennium. The split
of Western Christianity into Protestants and Catholics happened partly because of his
writings and teachings. He also popularized the notion that the Bible should be published in
the language that everyday people spoke. Before Luther, the commonly used Latin Bible had
to be translated by the priests for ordinary people. In addition, Luther believed that priests,
monks, and ministers should be allowed to marry. This contradicted Christian teaching of
that time. To Luther, the Bible should be the only source of spiritual authority. He opposed
giving spiritual authority to tradition, the pope, or any other political or religious leader,
including himself.

relationship.
Social relationship – is the fundamental unit of analysis within the social sciences,
and describes any voluntary or involuntary interpersonal relationship between two or more
individuals and between groups.

behavior in its social and cultural aspects. Usually included within the social sciences

historical study are almost indistinguishable from work done in the social sciences.
The social sciences, as distinct and recognized academic disciplines, emerged only on the
cusp of the 20th century.

Middle Ages, High Middle Ages, and Late Middle Ages.
