Topic vs. Theme
A topic = a single word, broad concept such as LOVE
A theme = a narrowed topic that provides an insight to life written in a complete sentence
It is important to remember that a TOPIC is NOT a THEME. When analyzing a work of art, it is
important to break topics into themes before writing an analytical essay. A focused theme shapes
the argument of the essay and determines the selection of evidence. Essentially, the theme is what
needs to be proven in the essay.
Topic - Theme List
A topic-theme list is a brainstorm list that contains topics and themes to help a reader uncover
meaning in literature. A topic-theme list contains two columns. The left column is a list to generate
topics. The right column is a list to generate themes. After generating topics in the left-hand
column, the reader then narrows the topics into specific themes by asking the question: “What does
this piece of literature say about this topic?” When it is time to write a formal essay, the reader can
select a theme to develop into an argumentative thesis and eventually a polished piece of writing.
Using this strategy consistently guarantees that a reader will always have something to write about.
