Drama as a Broadcast Format In line with the utilization of broadcast media and the fairly resilient nature of the use for technology in the country, the drama has emerged and continues to be a prospective venture for broadcast material to be maximized in the goal of establishing a creative enterprise. Drama, in its earliest form, is defined and characterized by its contextualization in the theatre arts. In the theatre, drama coincides with the idea of cultural expression and appreciation for literature. As a broadcast format, it still follows the similar fundamental principles when it comes to its primary motivation to relate to human experiences but with the application of technology, it now has more capacity to narrate a story without limitations. Audience members are drawn to this kind of format because it exposes profoundness and meaning in the individual struggles or even successes. Through television and radio, people have realized the value of being able to concretize stories that have been assumed to be conceivable only with the use of paper and pen. Drama in the Philippines Alongside the introduction of broadcast technology in the Philippines during the early 1900s is the proliferation of programs in the television and the radio that could be categorized under drama. These drama programs are distinct for tapping themes of hope, justice, honor, and love. These programs depict stories with susceptible characters whose roles in the program soon become anticipated by the audience yet it still proves to be a source of entertainment, life lessons, and inspiration for the audience. The protagonist of the show bears the characteristics of beauty, kindness, unselfishness, and perseverance. The wicked character of the program usually bears an impertinent character, displaying arrogance in her actions yet always has the well-thought plan to eliminate or destroy the happiness of the protagonist. The progress of the story and the development of the characters in the drama format usually encompass and portray rags to riches, and are sprinkled with predictable twists. These include the frequently abused and tormented lead character being the ultimate heiress of the richest man in the land; a love triangle involving the protagonist and antagonist; an initially unlikeable and arrogant guy taking a change of heart; one character meeting by chance another character which turns out to be important to solving some mystery; and forbidden love. Stories always end positively, with the antagonist either dead or changed in repentance and the protagonist alive and with the promise of a happy life.

The audience members of the program ranged from members of Class B/Broader C to Class D-E, as there was an element of sophistication in the treatment of the characters and subplots. The soap has been recognized both by audiences and critics and was widely discussed even in the internet environment. The viewers became very active through the Q and A portion at the end of each episode, where viewers text their answers and have the chance to win prizes. This program, with its powerhouse cast, was very successful that ABS-CBN immediately planned a second season for the series, Maging Sino Ka Man: Book 2.

Lobo was a drama series that culminated the glorious rise of Angel Locsin during her transfer to ABS-CBN from its rival network GMA 7. It challenged the network as it demanded digital technology for it to fully actualize the fantasy elements of the program. With Piolo Pascual as her leading man, the viewers were ecstatic to witness the progress of their pairing. Audience members from Class C, and Class D-E, were frequent viewers of the program in the evening time slot. This romance drama follows the life of Lyka (Angel Locsin) as a lobo or werewolf who encounters and falls in love with Noah (Piolo Pascual). The conflicting storyline comes in when they discover each others secrets and realize that their relationship is forbidden and could only lead them to their downfall. The problematic situation they place themselves is further magnified by the fact that they are affiliated with two opposing groups the Luna and the Waya. The Luna organization despises the existence of werewolves while the Waya continuously maximize efforts to propagate harmony between the humans and the werewolves.
The impressive graphics utilized in the series not only became a novelty in the line of primetime series but it also presented a new challenge for the actors as they were able to exemplify their acting craft despite the limitation of realistic environment. Angel Locsin proved herself as an actress as she was able to receive a nomination for the Best Performance by an Actress category in the 2009 International Emmy Awards for her exceptional performance in her role. This show was also recognized in the 30th BANFF World Television Festival in Toronto, and was expected to be released in other countries in Indo-China, Asia, Europe, and Africa. Lobo revolutionized the treatment of primetime series as it was able to go beyond the conventions of the extremely difficult and confusing twists usually present in teleseryes and was able to introduce technology to add to the level of suspense and mystery in the series.

Running Time: 30 minutes Language(s): Filipino Assessment: Marina showed as a fantasy and drama in hopes to attract the children audience with the mermaid characters. Claudine Barreto was a good choice for ABS-CBN as she was one of the top actresses during her time in Marina. TV fantasy and magic was greatly appreciated and progressed- with millions of Filipinos enjoying this new breed of fictional drama reaching 50.8 %
in the ratings. The show was popular enough that more new breed TV fantasy dramas were sure to offshoot from this start. The show won numerous awards in 2004, namely the 2004 PMPC Star Awards for TV under Best Primetime-Drama Series; 2004 PMPC Star Awards for TV under Best New Female TV Personality; and 2004 Catholic Mass Media Awards for Outstanding Drama Series.
8. Darna Original Comic By: Mars Ravelo Adapted and Created By: GMA Network Original Run: April 11, 2005 November 25, 2005 Original Channel: GMA Network Artists: Starring Angel Locsin as Darna Supporting Cast:
Alessandra De Rossi as Valentina Celia Rodriguez as Braguda Tonton Gutierrez as Nosferamus/Tatay Mulong Eddie Garcia as Oscar/Mambabarang Carmina Villaroel as Sulfura/Sabrina Christopher de Leon as Dr. Zombie/Dr. Ted Cristine Reyes as Molecula Berwin Meily as "Toymaster" K. Brosas as Divina Devinica/Divina Demonica Katrina Halili as Black Darna/Carol Nadine Samonte as Ava
Darna is an adaptation of Mars Ravelos famous comic book character. Although this was only the 2005 re-make and re-airing, it still captured the main attraction as to why Darna is very popular, especially among Filipino men- the attractive main character, Angel Locsin. Of course, being a comic, the target of this TV series is actually the men. Notice how Angel Locsin is dressed, and her movements-- making her very appealing to the male population. Because of its success, it was able to reach 54.3 % in the ratings. Of course, it is not only the males who have a say with Darna. The show was very popular, so much that the children donned the contemporary costumes and used it in various occasions.
9. Agua Bendita Original Comic By: Rod Santiago Adapted and Directed By: Malu Sevilla, Claudio Sanchez-Mariscal IV, Don Cuaresma and Jojo Saguin Original Run: February 8, 2010 September 3, 2010 Original Channel: ABS-CBN Corporation Artists: Starring Andi Eigenmann as Agua Cristi and Bendita Cristi Major Cast: Matteo Guidicelli as Ronnie Aguirre Jason Abalos as Paculdo "Paco" Barrameda
Running Time: 30-45 minutes Language(s): Filipino; Cebuano Assessment: During the 32nd Catholic Mass Media Awards, the series won as the Best TV Drama Series/Program. It was programmed right after the news, TV Patrol. The strategy that was used was that right after news, go directly watch it so that the viewers had the feeling of something inaabangan. The things that retained the show were its inaabangan factor, the cliff hangers after every show, and the segment wherein they show clips for the next episode after the show. It had a lot of sponsors because the show had a texting game every show which encouraged viewers to participate in order to claim a prize. The target audience was mainly children because it showed fantasy due to its graphic look. It also adhered to the adults because it involved drama and it
showed interaction among parent and child. Lastly, the show was very appealing to the public because the star was really an eye candy, a very beautiful and upcoming star. 10. Captain Barbell Created By: GMA Network Original Run: May 29, 2006 January 12, 2007 Original Channel: GMA Network and VIVA Films Artists: Starring Richard Gutierrez as Captain Barbell; Rhian Ramos as Leah Lazaro; Suppporting Cast: Richard Gomez as Viel Villian Patrick Garcia as Levi Villian Paolo Bediones as Professor Brando Camille Prats as Marikit Kit Salvacion Snooky Serna as Mrs. B Angel Aquino as Barbara Ryan Yllana as Bobby Ricky Davao as Cesar Magtanggol Jacky Lou Blanco as Sandra Magtanggol
Running Time: 30-45 minutes Language(s): Filipino Assessment: Comic adaptation was the strength of this show- with the children of the masses being the target audience. Originally, Captain Barbell was a movie in VIVA Films, until popular demand and mass audience appeal made GMA remake it into a fictional action drama TV series. What was fantastic about Captain Barbell was its inspirational motivation amongst the childrensomeone who they can look up to as a hero. The Filipinos are of course fond of superheroes, no doubt, so it is only fitting to see children idolizing the hero in the series. Like all superheroes, it was his strength and costume which attracted the children; costume in a sense that he was different- that he was special (like what most of the D-E class children would want to be), and strength- that he is able to overcome the obstacles he faces (something that the children in the DE class would also want).
The Television Drama: Review and Analysis Unlike the radio drama wherein programs are slowly losing listeners, television drama programs have been able to gain a following because of the atmosphere of competition that has been emanated in the years of its existence. Meanwhile, the competition in the radio is not that evident or noticeable because of the presence of multiple radio stations. ABS-CBN and GMA7, two of the biggest broadcasting networks in the country, have been producing talents and demonstrating high-end technology and novel concepts in creating their programs which could be categorized in the drama format. Despite the pressure to create such variety of programs, the familiar storyline evident in the programs provide a tangible manifestation of the Filipino culture and tradition. Pangako Sayo marked the preeminence of these kinds of programs as it was able to gain recognition not only here in the country but also to different Asian countries as well. Pangako Sayo basically challenged locally-produced programs to aim for a higher standard in terms of making an impact to the international audience. Marimar, in the Philippine version, launched the career of the actress, Marian Rivera since it was a drama program that the Filipino audience members were excited about even before the actual run of the show. The original version of Marimar was shown years before and it became obtained one of the highest ratings in television history. May Bukas Pa, on the other hand, presented something new to the Filipino audience. After several consecutive years of producing drama programs that solely focused on the romantic love between the two lead characters, ABS-CBN was able to conceptualize a program that highlighted Catholic values. This program became very popular as it was able to cater to the family and the young members of the audience. The popularity of fantaseryes also entered the line of competition with the show, Marina starring Claudine Barretto. Shows with fantasy elements captured the eyes of the Filipino audience, but more importantly, heavy drama still took its place as one of the most celebrated works of the networks. Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay and Maging Sino Ka Man were among these celebrated works as it had an excellent storyline and superb acting from the lead casts. The television drama continues to find opportunities to elevate the quality of their programs and bring it to stand out in the international scene.
The Future of Drama in the Television and Radio In a more general perspective, more modern trends and developments on the Philippine drama broadcast format have examined a wide array of themes that include historical drama, the increase in nationalistic and Filipinistic sentiments, the continued outpouring of translations and adaptations of foreign programs, the emergence of bolder themes considered taboo in the past, the youth organizations deep involvement in drama, the support and recognition given to artists through award-giving bodies and
television festivals, the revivals of traditional drama, etc. These have been revolutionary steps that drama programs are taking to relate more to their audience. We can see that there is a difficulty in keeping up with the expectations of the listeners and viewers to formulate a program that could reach the amount of praises of the first drama programs released in their culminating in the radio and television. Social conditions like poverty in the urban and rural areas, the struggles of the working class, domestic problems, political developments, and conflict of religious beliefs have given more substance to the treatment of drama in the modern age, which is more socially aware and concerned. More and more programs of this nature are created, and they try to hold on to the idea of social reality. Perhaps Filipino drama may approximate the greatness and stature it reached during its Golden Era in the early part of the 20th century. For it no longer serves as mere entertainment; it is now as relevant as it was in the remote past. The drama broadcast format of the future should discuss timely problems as the director identifies with the fundamental social tendencies of his time, communicating the realities, the human condition with awareness. The conceptualization of drama programs soon will pursue this path despite the proliferation of mass-marketed ideas. There is now an effort to relate to a critical, realistic, and unified vision of contemporary society and not generally to the standardized and private matters solely focusing the on the self-actualization of one person.
