What Is It (Lesson Proper)
Principles of design in clothing
The attractive finished garment is carefully handled by the designer who applied the elements of design like color, line,
shape, and texture. However, art principles on design like harmony, proportion, balance, rhythm and emphasis should be
utilized to produce a more pleasing effect in clothing.
1. Harmony- attained when there is unity among the elements of design like colors, lines, shape and texture that
contribute equally to produce a pleasing effect on a garment.
2. Proportion- all parts of the garment are related in size, length and width. Good taste is shown by having the
measurements body parts proportional to the garments to best achieve the desired effect. This can also be attained
through the proper arrangement of buttons, pockets and other designs
3. Balance- has equal amount of weight from the center of interest to all different directions. There are two kinds of
balance and these are:
3.1 Formal Balance – a dress with formal balance has the same design on both sides from the center.
3.2 Informal Balance – the sides of a dress have different designs from the center.
4. Rhythm – this is achieved when the eye moves smoothly and easily able to connect all details of interest from all
points of the design. Rhythm in a design can be attained through repetition, opposition, radiation, and gradation, of
design in color, line, size and shape, including buttons and accessories.
4.1 Repetition of lines, color and shape
4.2 Radiation- the shirring of the neckline radiate down to the hemline of the garment
4.3 Transition – a change of design from pleats on waistline to fitted skirt at the hemline
4.4 Gradation- graduated size of pocket Small, medium, and large
5. Emphasis – attracts the eyes to one feature making all others secondary. In order to emphasis a design, one must
use contrasting colors, decoration or accessories.
You in a world of Color
Color can do wonders for you and your clothes! Because color is so important to your life and the way you look and feel,
you will want to know some basic facts about color. First: Learn to choose colors that will make you feel good and look
attractive. Next: A simple way to start learning about color is to study the color wheel and the basic color schemes.
The three most useful color are red, blue and yellow. These are called primary colors. The primary colors are very
important because all other colors are made from them. Notice where the primary colors are on the color wheel.
Red Blue
Yellow
The second group of colors include purple or violet, orange and green. These are called secondary colors. A Secondary
color is made by combining two primary colors. The secondary colors are found betweenthe primary color wheel. Look at
the color wheel. Can you see that red and blue make purple or violet, blue and yellow make green, and yellow and red
make orange?
A third group of colors may be called associated colors. Associated colorsmay be made by combining a primary color
and a secondary color. Some of the associated colors are:
Red-violet- made by combining the primary color red with the secondary color purple or violet.
Blue-green- made by combining the primary color blue with the secondary color green.
What is another associated color? Look at the color wheel to see what colors can combine to make an associated color.
Remembering these group of colors will give you start inmakin color “ work” for you. So here they again:
Primary- red, blue, yellow
Secondary- violet, green, orange
Associated- red violet, blue violet, blue green, yellow green, yellow orange, and red orange.
Color Harmony in Clothing
1. Monochromatic Harmony- used various values and intensities of one color or one color with black and white.
Example: Green, light green, medium green and dark green. Use combination of these colors to contrastin a garment.
2. Analogous Harmony- utilizes colors, which are closely related on the color wheel that contain similar components
such as blue, blue green and green. They are the most preferred combinations.
3. Complementary or Split Color Harmony- involves direct opposites on the color wheel such as red, and green or
blue and orange. These are exceedingly strong and bold combinations.
4. Triadic Color Harmony- is any three colors that are of the same distance in the color wheel.
What Is More (Lesson Activity)
Arrange the jumble letter to reveal the answer. Write the correct word on the space provided before the number
______________1. oportionrp- This can also be attained through the proper arrangement of buttons, pockets and
other designs
______________2. hyrthm- It a design that can be attained through repetition, opposition, radiation, and gradation, of
design in color, line, size and shape, including buttons and accessories.
______________3. smapehsi- attracts the eyes to one feature making all others secondary.
______________4. amonryh- Attained when there is unity in elements of design.
______________5. oclro- The element of design first attracts the eye.
What I Have Learned (Generalization)
1. Enumerate principles of design in clothing (1-5)
2. Pimary color-____________________, ___________________, __________________
Secondary color - __________________, ____________________, ___________________
Associated color- ___________________, ____________________, ___________________
What I Can Do (Application)
Experiment with Color. Follow these suggestions to learn more about how colors work.
1. Place 3 glasses of water on a table covered with white paper or white cloth. Add 3 drops of red food coloring to the
first glass, 3 drops of blue coloring to the second glass, and 3 drops of yellow to the third glass. (These are your primary
color).
2. Place three more empty glasses on the table: into the first empty glass, pour half the yellow water and half the blue.
( What color do you get?) To the second empty glass one half red and one half glass of yellow.( What color do you get?)
To the third empty glass add one half glass of blue water and one half glass of red water.(What color do you get?)
3. Now try pouring some of the secondary colors together. Notice the new colors. What does this tell you about
combining colors?
Assessment (Summative)
Cut pictures of colorful clothes from magazines or catalogue. Decide which of these clothes would look best on you. Why?
Which of these would not look best on you? Why? Paste these pictures in your answer sheet and record under each of
them the reason why it might be a good or poor choice for you.
