Topic Text Structure-Compare and Contrast
PA Anchor/Standard Standard - CC.1.2.4.E
or Eligible Content Use text structure to interpret information (e.g., chronology, comparison,
cause/effect, problem/ solution).
Eligible Content - E04.B-C.2.1.2 Describe the overall structure
(e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events,
ideas, concepts, or information and text features in a text or part of a text.
Lesson Objectives After teacher guided instruction, students will be able to put similarities
and differences of two items correctly into a Venn Diagram.
Materials Students Teacher
Already created flipbook Extra flipbooks to pass out
for students who were not in class
(or lost theirs)
Flipbook page (after passed out) Compare/contrast flipbook page
Worksheet (after passed out) Venn Diagram worksheet Pencils
with paragraph page
Highlighters (optional) Smartboard
Venn Diagrams
2 pages each, Fro-Yo, Ice Cream,
Both
Planning for Differentiation: Students will go to Mrs. McKay’s room as scheduled.
(learning environment)
Learners
Own text (if time)-choice of prompt to respond to (product)
Modifications/Accommodations: Students will listen to passages as they
are read aloud (accom)
Give students a larger version of the Venn Diagram to fill in rather than
using the Venn Diagram on the flipbook page (accom)
Flipbook page has two similarities, and two sets of differences. Look for
one set of the differences and one similarity. (mod)
Lesson Presentation
Introduction Get out your flipbook materials that we started using yesterday. We are
11-22
going to add another page.
Today, we will be going over the text structure called compare and
contrast. First, can anyone tell me what text structure we looked at
yesterday? (problem and solution) What does that mean?
Let’s review the five types of text structure that we will be using

(Start passing out new pages as this video plays)
Sequence of What does compare and contrast mean? Talk with your partner.
activities including (finding similarities and differences between two or more things)
assessments Play this video for an introduction to what Compare and Contrast text
structure is (to 2:40)
https://youtu.be/nTGoNT6LJuQ
Pause the video at 1:55. Use smartboard to underline the words that
students find.
Play, then pause at 2:40
Draw a Venn Diagram over Lebron James and Kobe Bryant picture on
the video.
Have students state similarities and differences that they see, and I
will write it on the Venn Diagram.
Students will then partner read the ice cream vs. fro-yo story that goes
with the Venn Diagram white worksheet. As they read, they should
highlight or underline the signal words that they find.
When they finish reading, STATE they should begin working on the
question at the bottom of the page. “How would you answer the last
question in the passage you just read? The question is, “which of these
sweet snacks [, ice cream or fro-yo,] would you choose on a hot, summer
day?”
After they finish reading, students will be split into two smaller groups
to do an activity through parallel teaching.
Activity-Calling on a student, they will locate a detail that they found
in the text that would relate to ice cream, frozen yogurt, or both. When
they state the detail they find, within the group they will move towards
the window facing outside, towards the door, or stand in the middle.
After the activity, the class will get back together as a group. Briefly
review what compare and contrast means.
Lesson Wrap-up Students should finish answering the question they started earlier then
start the compare and contrast flipbook sheet on their own.
If they finish with extra time, students can be given a prompt to begin
writing their own compare and contrast text. Ideas below
Dogs and cats, rain and snow, markers and pencils, door and window
