Lesson Plan
Subject: Mathematics Grade: 3 Duration: 45 mins
Date: March 16, 2022 Attainment Target: Use the basic operations, number relationships
in order to solve real world problems involving fractions
Unit title: Number Focus question: N/A
Lesson Topic: Changing mixed numbers to improper fractions
Pre-requisite knowledge: Students should already know how to
Perform the basic math operations (addition, subtraction and multiplication)
Identify the parts of a fraction (whole numbers, numerator, and denominator)
Identify types of fractions (proper, improper and mixed)
Represent halves, thirds, and fourths by dividing an object or shape
Specific Objectives: At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1. Write and give example of mixed numbers and improper fractions. (Cognitive-
remember and understand)
2. Share and participate in groups how to convert mixed numbers to improper
fractions. (Affective)
3. Construct a table by drawing shapes to illustrate the mixed number and correctly
converting to an improper fraction. (Psychomotor-complex)
Content Summary:
A fraction is a part of a whole.
An improper fraction is a single fraction that is more than a whole. It is expressed with
the number representing the numerator being larger than the number representing the
denominator.
Example:
Term 2, 2021/2022 1
Teacher: School:
A proper fraction is a single fraction that represents an amount that is less than the whole.
It is expressed with the number representing the numerator being smaller than the number
representing the denominator.
Example:
A mixed number consists of a whole number and a proper fraction.
