Voice Assistants

Voice assistants use natural language processing and deep neural networks to understand spoken commands and questions. They can function locally on a device using microphones and speakers or rely on cloud-based software to process requests. Requests are analyzed to determine intent, an answer is retrieved from databases or generated, and a spoken response is returned. While voice assistants are hands-free and convenient, they do not understand everything and transmitting data raises privacy concerns.

Voice assistants

natural language processing

General
• Beginning in 1950
• deep neural network techniques
• a lot of calculating, memory, data
• understand words, translate into other languages, find personal names, qualifying texts as positive or negative, write own texts, find answers
to questions
Functionality
• two places with functionality: local device, software in cloud
• local device: microphones, speakers, electronics
• software in cloud: recording, investigate an answer dialogue
1.Activation:
• recording the environment, send audio to the electronics, search for activation words
• activation word: recording, stream audio into the network
• no activation word: delete audio after a few seconds
2. Check, if local processing is possible
• question about date, time? -> can be answered local without connecting to the software
Functionality
• 3.Streaming the request into the cloud
• if question can not be answered local, the recording is sent to the software
• 4. Processing the request in the voice assistant
• steps: voice recognition, determination of actual content, request, processing, request, determination of answer
• spoken words are extracted, processing of words
• recognicing words with actual intention, seperate them from the rest
• request can be processed concretely, assistant uses database on request, retrieves data
• compilation of text as an answer
• defined text response is sent back to the used device, answer is played by the speakers
Advantages/Disadvantages
Pros Cons
• using without hands • don‘t understand everything
• saves time • need a lot of datavolume
• use from another room • data protection isn‘t guaranteed
Own opinion
• many advantages: fast answers, do a lot of things, use it‘s only with voice
• sometimes don‘t know what you mean, listening to you everytime
• little bit creepy but also very useful
• good invention, but it could be improved
