The astrolabe is an ancient astronomical instrument used to measure the positions and altitudes of celestial bodies. It was primarily invented by the ancient Greeks in 225 BCE based on the theories of Hipparchus. The Arab astronomer Al-Battani established the mathematical background of astrolabes. It was also used as a mathematical measuring instrument for surveying purposes, such as measuring the height of buildings.

Astrolabe is a Greek word that
means “to take a star” or “star
taker.”
Portable wooden or metal
astronomical instrument which is
used to measure the positions and
altitudes of celestial bodies, to find
the observer's time or latitude, or to
solve other mathematical problems
Primarily invented by the
ancient Greeks in 225 BCE by
Apollonius based on the
theories and the findings of
Hipparchus.
The Arab astronomer Al-
Battani (Albatenius) was the

Ring: Used to suspend the astrolabe, typically from the thumb
Mater: The astrolabe body, so-named from the Latin word for
“mother” because it holds all the tympans (plates) within itself

Tympan: An inner plate engraved with one or more


projections of the sky for particular latitudes

Rete: Named from the Latin word for “net,” this pierced disk is
a map of the sky. It is a stereographic projection of the great
celestial circles and stars

Rule: An index for lining up points on the ecliptic and outer


scales on the mater in order to read the astrolabe.
