Emergency lighting central monitoring system

Chapter One System Overview

System Introduction
The emergency lighting central monitoring system is designed to test, maintain and manage
independent powering emergency lights. Capable of automatic testing, data analysis and result
judgment, this system improves the maintainability of emergency lights, thus increasing their reliability.

1.1 Features
1) The Emergency Lighting Monitoring Control Panel has a 7-inch colorful touch screen, offering
excellent man-machine interaction experience.

2) Controlled by sound and light, the integrated controller automatically conducts real-time and
efficient testing and inspection of operating states and faults of emergency lights. Events will be
recorded and history can be retrieved.

3) Logs can be displayed. History events can be viewed on the screen and imported into the
computer.

4) Timed automatic testing, which can test lights’ emergency functions according to the set time
period.

5) Timed battery maintenance, which can charge and discharge batteries according to the set time
period so as to prolong the battery life.

6) Emergency Lighting Monitoring Control Panel and INTERFACEs are connected by CAN bus.
The INTERFACE and its subordinate equipments are connected by RS485 bus. The layout is
simple and the cost is low.

7) Maximum 64 INTERFACE within a system, with each connecting up to 254 equipment.

8) The emergency state will be triggered when external fire signals are received by the controller.

Fig. 1.1 system topology

The Emergency Lighting Monitoring Control Panel uses CAN bus to communicate with INTERFACE,
which communicate with fire emergency lights by RS485 bus. Another REPEATER will be added to
increase the communication distance when equipments are too far from the INTERFACE.

1.3 Network Distance

1. The communication distance between the Emergency Lighting Monitoring Control Panel and the
INTERFACE as well as betweenINTERFACE should not be over 1km. Otherwise, another INTERFACE
should be added to expand the communication distance.

2. The communication distance between the INTERFACE and its subordinate lights should not be over
1km.Otherwise, a REPEATER should be added to expand the communication distance.

1.4 System Types

Installation and connecting methods should be chosen according to different scales, roughly,
small-scale, large-scale and remote systems. A small-scale system regards a single building as a unit;
a large-scale system covers a wider zone, such as a large supermarket and a shopping mall; a remote
system regards an zone with multiply buildings as a unit. Users can choose system types accordingly.

Attentions:
1. Emergency light address and Exit sign address under a certain INTERFACE can be randomly selected
as long as they are different from one another, but the address value should be below 254.
2. Emergency light addresses under different INTERFACE are independent from one another, thus can
overlap.

Emergency lighting central monitoring system

Attentions:
1. A REPEATER should be added to increase RS485 bus communication distance or entries be added in
the same RS485 bus because a large-scale system covers so wide an zone that communication
signals cannot reach certain distances.
2. Each REPEATER occupies one of 254 addresses allocable in one INTERFACE, thus should be
different from any fire emergency light address under the same INTERFACE.

1.4.3 Remote Application System

For multiple small buildings or zones

Fig 1.4 Remote Application System

Attentions:
A INTERFACE should be added to increase the communication distance because the Emergency Lighting
Monitoring Control Panel is so distant from INTERFACE that communication signals cannot reach certain
zones. In order to distinguish this INTERFACE’s function from that of other INTERFACE, it is signaled
as a REPEATER but its nature as an INTERFACE shall not change.

Communication cable description:

Shieled twisted pair:RVSP-2*1.5mm2,characteristic impedance 120 Ω.
The length of the communication line from the bus node to each luminaire cannot be longer than 1 meter.

Each channel of the CAN bus or the RS485 bus is connected with a matching resistor to ensure stable
communication. Each INTERFACE will be equipped with two matching resistors at the factory, which
are connected to the end of the line by the customer according to the actual situation on site.

Chapter Three Address Assignment

3.1 Fire Engineering Map Example

Fig 3.1

Attentions:
1. The address of different emergency lights under the same INTERFACE should be different from
one another and should not be above 254. The recommended address is below 240.
2. Adjacent lights are recommended to be in the same test group.
3. 4.2V battery voltage maintaining groups discharge their lights for three hours or to 4.2V. Adjacent
lights and lights in a key location such as corners are recommended not to be in the same
maintaining group. The layout should be in line with local fire standards and regulations.
4. The system is capable of supporting up to eight different maintaining groups. Each and every test
group can be programmed to test in different data and times so as to ensure that after annual
compulsory continuous discharging test, the whole emergency lighting system will not be in a
discharging state which will compromise the safety of buildings.
5. Testing process should be alternated by assigning adjacent parts to different test groups to ensure
that only a small number of emergency lights are under testing.

3.2 PC Port Software Operation

Software Introduction:
The software, operated on the computer, is designed to establish sheets used by Emergency Lighting
Monitoring Control Panels and remote controllers, assign light addresses, materialize/show physical
locations as well as test and maintain groups, thus becoming an important part of the system. PC
software located in the SD card carried with the control panel.

Appendix 1 System Installation Guidance
1. Read through this instructions to understand the functions and components of the system.
2. After understanding the detailed functions of each equipment (see Table 1.1), the equipment
can be arranged according to the construction drawing.
3. For installing the equipment, please refer to the lights operation instruction and Chapter Two
Installation Guidance.
4. Based on the construction drawing, light equipments are edited through upper computer software.
(See 3.2 PC Port Software Operation) Please note the input of physical locations and the assignment
of battery maintaining groups. (see 3.2.4 Input Equipment Information)
5. After the operation of upper computer software, two files can be exported. The CSV document is
for the usage of machine and can be input to Emergency Lighting Monitoring Control Panel and
remote controller. The XLSX document is for the staff. (see 3.2.8 output)
6. When the installation of the equipment completes and is powered on, the staff chooses the
corresponding equipments according to the printed XLSX document and activates the equipments
by remote controller. The operation of remote controller refers to 3.3 Remote Controller Assignment.
7. With the remote controller, The address assignment can be checked through zone test. Besides,
The files of the remote controller can be input into the computer through SD card so as to print the
list of inactivate equipments to find out the inactivate equipments. (see 3.3 Remote
Controller Assignment&3.2.9 Print)
8. When inputting the configuration file into Emergency Lighting Monitoring Control Panel, (see
4.3.2.2 Import and Export) and setting battery maintaining groups and testing groups. (see 4.3.2.4
Test Setup), the system will maintain and test the battery automatically.
9. The installation of the whole system completes. All work process automatically except the light
maintenance.
