Chapter 3
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the research methodology, including the sources of data,
data gathering procedure, and statistical tools used by the researchers in the study.
Research Method
This study is a quantitative type of research that aims to explain a phenomenon
through collecting numerical data and execution of statistical, mathematical or
computational techniques (Adedoyin 2020). This quantitative analysis is focused on the
parental involvement to academic performance of senior high school students. The
numerical data will be composed of the number of students with parental support and
the average grade from their past School Year.
Specially, this study will utilize correlation research design that establishes a
relationship between two phenomena in which it explores and examines the
relationships between and among the variables (Curtis, Comiskey, and Dempsey, 2016).
The researchers will determine the relationship between parental involvement to
academic performance of senior high school students by comparing the average grades
of those who have parental support to those who doesn’t have.
Sources of Data
The researchers will use the survey questionnaires to gathered the needed data
from their respondents. A survey is a method of gathering and compiling information
from a group of people, more often known as the sample, to gain knowledge by
organizations, businesses or institutions (QuestionPro, 2020). The survey will determine
the level of involvement of parents to their children’s academic performance by rating
the parental involvement from 1 to 5. The researchers will also gather the general
weight average of the SHS students from the past School Year.
Using the Slovin’s formula, the researchers determined the number of
respondents they will be needing 206 students (both Grade 11 and Grade 12).
Data Gathering Procedure
After finalizing the sources of data, the researchers formulated survey
questionnaires to be used in data gathering. The survey was created using individual
formed by the researchers. These questionnaires will be given to the respondents to
determine the list of parents who are involved in Learning and Academic performance
of SHS Students.
The researchers will first get a permit from the teachers to view the Form 137 of
the students who were part of the respondents of this research. After getting the
permission of the teacher, the researchers will then acquire the average of every
respondent for the past School Year.
Statistical Tools and Treatment
The following statistical procedure were used to interpret the data gathered
from the respondents of the study.
Frequency and Percentage Distribution. The demographic profile variable of the
respondents was analyzed using the sample percentage with the following formula:
F
%= ( 100 )
N
Where:
P = Percentage
F = Frequency for each categories of YES
N = Total number of respondents
100 = Constant multiplier
The researchers will use this formula to know the percentage of how involve the
parents are to their child’s learning and academic performance. F will stand as how
often the respondents choose the level of involvement under the category “YES”. N will
will be the total number of respondents and 100 will remain the constant multiplier.
Likert Scale. The following Likert Scale serves as the guide for interpreting the
data gathered.
Scale PERCENTAGE Corresponding Remarks
5 81 – 100 % Always
4 61 – 80 % Often
3 41 – 60% Sometimes
2 21 – 40% Seldom
1 0 – 20 % Never
Likert Scale will be used to determined the level of involvement. The indicated
percentages are all equivalent to different levels of involvement. These level will have
corresponding remarks such as always for the scale of level five involvement and never
for the level 1 involvement.
