Boost Converter
Def: A boost converter is a DC to DC converter with an output voltage greater
than the source voltage.
Boost Converter
A boost converter is sometimes called a step-up converter since it "steps up"
the source voltage.
Power for the boost converter can come from any suitable DC source, such as
batteries, solar panels, rectifiers, and DC generators.
Since power (P=VI) must be conserved, the output current is lower than the
source current.
Methods to Increase Output DC Voltage
There are several methods by which output DC voltage can be increased.
1. By connecting Batteries in series, the output voltage can be increased.
2. By using inverter, transformer, and rectifier combination, the output DC
voltage can be increased.
3. By using Boost Converter, the output DC voltage can be increased.
Method # 1
the output voltage can be increased,
by connecting Batteries in series
Increase Output DC Voltage by Batteries
12 V

24 V
Increase Output DC Voltage by Batteries
Battery power systems often stack cells
in series to achieve higher voltage.
However, sufficient stacking of cells is
not possible in many high voltage
applications due to lack of space.
Method # 2
Output DC voltage can be increased, by using
inverter, transformer, and rectifier combination
Method 2: Increase Output DC Voltage
12 V V1 V2 24 V
Inverter Step-Up Rectifier
Transformer
Disadvantages
This method is very bulky,
Inefficient,
Costly.
Method # 3
Output DC voltage can be
increased by using Boost Converter
Boost Converter Method to Increase Voltage
Advantages
This method is very efficient having efficiency more than 90%.
Cheap,
Light Weighted.
Boost Converter Method to Increase Voltage
Boost Converter may consists of at least two semiconductors (a diode and a
transistor) and at least one energy storage element: a capacitor, inductor, or
the two in combination.
Duty Cycle
Def: Duty cycle is the ratio of time a load or circuit is ON compared to the
time the load or circuit is OFF.
A duty cycle or power cycle is the fraction of one period in which a signal or
system is active.
Duty cycle, sometimes called "duty
factor," is expressed as a
percentage of ON time. A 60% duty
cycle is a signal that is ON 60% of
the time and OFF the other 40%.

Open Loop Boost Converter
Closed Loop Boost Converter
In the closed loop system, it is possible to get the output extremely close to
the desired output voltage.
This closed loop boost converter system is very important topic for the
research.
Many optimization techniques as well as intelligent techniques can be used
on this topic to complete
Bachelor degree FYP project,
Master degree research or
One of the PhD research objectives.
