Chem Lab 13

This document summarizes a lab experiment to determine the identity of an unknown metal M in the compound M2CO3 by titrating a sample of M2CO3 with 0.2 moldm-3 HCl and using methyl orange as an indicator. The student weighed out 2.0g of M2CO3, dissolved it, and titrated 25cm3 aliquots with HCl while recording the volumes. Calculations will be done to determine the concentration of M2CO3 and the molar mass of M2CO3 to identify the metal M.

Lab: #13

Skill(s): AI, MM

Date: 3/27/21

Aim: To determine the Identity of metal M in the unknown compound M2CO3 by titration with
0.2moldm^-3 HCl.

Material: sample, 0.2moldm^-3 HCl, screened methyl orange indicator

Apparatus: Clamp, funnel, stand, conical flask, beakers, pipette, pipette filler, burette

Method:
1. 2.0g of M2CO3 was weighed accurately and transferred to a 250cm3 volumetric flask. Water
was used to make up to the mark.
2. A burette was filled with HCl, and the initial volume was recorded.
3. 25cm3 of the M2CO3 solution was pipetted into a conical flask and three drops of screened
methyl orange was added.
4. The solution was titrated to the first permanent colour change.
5.The procedure was repeated until two readings differed by 0.1cm3

Results:
Mass of M2CO3 used: 2.0g

Table showing volume of HCl used to titrate M2CO3 solution.

Volume/cm3 Rough 1 2 3

Final 16.26cm3 27.03cm3 38.0cm3 18.49cm3

Initial 2.41cm3 16.cm3 27.48cm3 10.41cm3

Used 11.70cm3 13.40cm3 13.80cm3 13.70cm3

Calculations:
1. Calculate the mass concentration of the M2CO3.
Mass concentration= mass (g) of solute / volume of solution (dm3)
2.0g/0.25dm³ = 8g/dm³
2. Calculate the average volume of HCl used (13.40+13.80+13.70)/ 3= 13.63cm3

3. Calculate the number of moles of HCl used.

# Of moles = (concentration of HCl x average volume used)

4. Write an equation for the reaction between HCl and M2CO3.

2HCl (aq) + M2CO3 (aq) → 2MCl (aq) + H2O (l) + CO2 (g)

5. Using the mole ratio determine the number of moles M2CO3 reacting in 25cm3.
2HCl+ M2CO3 → 2 MCl + H2O + CO2
Mole ratio=2:1

6. Calculate the concentration of the M2CO3 solution.

- Concentration=mol/vol
