Harry Potter is a well-known coming-of-age series that is written by J.K Rowling, a British
author. The seven-book series revolves around the life of Harry Potter. Harry is the son of James
and Lily Potter. James and Lily were killed by Lord Voldemort and after this Harry lived with his
uncle Vernon and aunt Petunia. His adventures along with his two friends Hermoine Granger
and Ron Weasley. He considered himself completely ordinary and unlucky since he lived with
his abusive aunt and uncle, Vernon and Petunia Dursley. However, Harry was entirely unaware
that in the wizarding world, he was known as “the boy who survived”. Harry was given this
name because he survived the dark lord, Voldemort’s attack with no harm apart from a single
bolt-shaped scar on his forehead. Harry was always destined to be an amazing wizard and with
parents like Lily and James Potter, he belonged in the wizarding world.
Nearing his eleventh birthday, he started experiencing strange things. Harry made a glass
window disappear in a zoo on Dudley’s (Vernon and Petunia’s son) bday and could even talk to a
snake and understand it. It certainly got more uncanny when he started receiving letters
addressed to him from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy but the Dursleys never their
house literally was flooded with letters and owls kept collecting outside their house. That night
was Harry’s eleventh birthday when Hagrid came to Harry’s rescue and then he realised he was
actually a wizard and his parents did not die in a car crash. The Dursley’s relieved that they hid
the fact that harry’s parents were magic folk because Aunt Petunia thought that her sister, Lily
was a ‘freak’ to be a witch. From there, Hagrid and Harry started on a journey to go to Hogwarts.
The rest of the story revolves around Harry learning and adapting to the wizarding world while
fighting against Voldemort and numerous people under the Dark Lord.

INTRODUCTION

Harry Potter was chosen to defeat Lord Voldemort, prophesied and fated. He was connected to
Voldemort because Harry became one of the pieces of the Horcrux as Voldemort attacked Harry
and Lily cast herself between them to prevent the attack which saved Harry. Due to this reason,
Harry had many attributes same as that Voldemort like being a parselmouth and being able to
listen to his voices and see scenes which Voldemort goes through. However, this isn't their only
connection. Both Harry and Voldemort are descended from the Peverell brothers. They both were
half-blooded. The wands of Harry and Voldemort had a feather of Dumbeldore’s Phoenix.
It is indeed the fact that the story would go on a different track if anyone other than Harry were
the chosen one. There are numerous characters in Harry Potter who play a major role in shaping
the story as is and many more plots can be explored without Harry being the protagonist.

Neville Longbottom
Neville is a pureblood wizard born to Frank and Alice Longbottom. They both were Aurors and
prominent members of the order of phoenix during the first war against Voldemort. Neville was
born on July 30th 1980. During the starting stages of the novel, Neville was considered a comic
relief, a person who was uncoordinated and a little messy. He was not depicted as a character
who lacked self-confidence and was shy. In fact, till Neville joins Dumbledore’s army, he was
isolated like Luna and was not that sure of his abilities.
When Hogwarts was swarming with Death Eaters with Snape as the school principal, throughout
this point, all hope appeared to be lost for Hogwarts students. When Neville joined
Dumbledore’s army, Neville got much-needed encouragement and that made him confident

In this prophecy, a name was not specified and Neville who was born just a day apart from Harry
was not considered to be the chosen one just because Voldemort believed that Harry was his
equal even though the rightful heir of Gryffindor was Neville as Harry was the heir of Slytherin.
And since Voldemort himself was a half-blood like Harry, chose him against a pureblood
Neville.

Would Neville’s parents have died, as Harry’s did? And would Voldemort still
have fallen? If Neville was the chosen one

Buckbeak tried and a date is set for his execution. Hermione mysteriously attends many classes
at once.
However, Harry was on his way to ask for help because he needs to get to Hogsmeade for the
trip his classmates are on. On the way, George and Fred come up with the Marauder's Map which
shows the secret passage to Hogsmeade. However the map happens to show a very mysterious
name, someone called Peter Pettigrew. It is later revealed that Peter Pettigrew was the one who
confessed to Voldemort and betrayed Harry's parents and that Sirius is just trying to protect
Harry. This proves Trelawney’s Prophecy of the servant returning to his master. Remus turns into
its werewolf form at the Shrieking Shack and attacks. Sirius saves them and is captured after a
mysterious Patronus saves all of them near the lake from dementors.
It is revealed in the Hospital Wing that Hermione had been using the Time Turner to attend
different classes. To save two innocent lives, Hermoine and Harry use the time turner. They save
Buckbeak before the execution and with the help of Buckbeak successfully save Sirius. Harry
also casts a Patronus charm to save his past self near the lake. Buckbeak flies off with Sirius.
Snape lets out that Remus is a werewolf and Remus resigns. Harry receives a letter from Sirius
giving him permission to visit Hogsmeade.

1994-1995
This year is full of new experiences. At the Dursleys, Harry through a dream sees that a
muggle caretaker is slaughtered by Wormtail and Lord Voldemort, and Harry is awakened by
his scar hurting. The Weasleys with Harry and Hermoine go see the Quidditch World Cup
where Ireland wins over Bulgaria. After the match, a Dark Mark is summoned, leading to
chaos.
The year starts with Dumbledore introducing the new Defence Against the Dark Arts Teacher,
Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody, and the announcement of the revival of the Triwizard tournament,
in which Champions from three European schools, id est, Beauxbatons, Dumstrang, and
Hogwarts compete. The Champions are chosen by the magical Goblet of Fire. Interestingly,
the Goblet chooses Harry as a fourth Champion apart from Fleur Delacour, Viktor Krum, and
Cedric Diggory. In the first class, Moody introduces the students to the unforgivable curses.
The Triwizard Tournament had 3 tasks. The first one was to retrieve a golden egg from a
dragon. On Moody’s suggestion, Harry summons the Firebolt, defeats the dragon, gets the
egg, and finally gets extra points too. The event is attended by various personalities including
the journalist Rita Skeeter and the Magizoologist Newt Scamander. The egg is supposed to
have the clue to the next task but when opened the egg shrieks loudly.
The Yule Ball, a Triwizard Tradition takes place wherein the Champions open the dance in
pairs. Taking Cedric’s advice, Harry opens the egg in the Prefect’s Washroom underwater,
thus revealing that the task is to recover something dear from Merpeople at the bottom of the
lake on the grounds. With Dobby’s help by providing Gillyweed, Harry completes this task
and saves Fleur’s sister too. Harry has a vision while in the Divination Class. He tells
Dumbledore and they see a memory in the Pensieve about Barty Crouch Jr. being sent to
Azkaban for torturing Neville’s parents.
The final task is a hedge maze with obstacles with the Cup in between for the winner. Cedric
and Harry help each other and touch the cup together, which turns out to be a Portkey,
transporting them to a graveyard. Peter Pettigrew appears there, kills Cedric, and restores
Voldemort using his father’s bone, Harry’s blood, and his hand. Voldemort summons his
Death Eaters and mentions that his faithful servant is at Hogwarts. He tortures Harry and
when in a duel, their wands connect, and manifestations of people killed by the wand appear
which is called the Priori Incantatem. These help Harry reach the Portkey, taking Cedric’s
body with him to Hogwarts.
Amidst the chaos caused by Harry coming back with Cedric’s body, Moody takes Harry to his
office and reveals himself to be the faithful servant. He explains his plans and as he is about to
kill Harry, Dumbledore, Snape, and McGonagall intervene, stunning Moody who turns out to
be Barty Crouch Jr. in disguise. Using Veritaserum, they get the truth out of Barty and
Voldemort’s plan. Dumbledore explains the connections of wands, and the phenomenon of
Priori Incantatem between Harry and Voldemort, both having the core of Fawkes’ feathers.
When Dumbledore announces the return of Voldemort, many don’t believe him, including the
Minister of Magic. Barty Jr. is administered a dementor's kiss and Dumbledore puts his plans
into action to counter Voldemort.

1995-1996
It's summer Harry is completely shaken and disturbed by what happened at the Triwizard
tournament. Cedric Diggory’s death has distressed him; he cannot stop blaming himself for it.
He is having a hard time trying to convince everyone that “He who must not be named “ has
returned and that too strong. The magical world is vulnerable to a disaster and no one is
paying heed to the warnings. The ministry of magic under Cornelius Fudge has started
controlling Hogwarts.
Harry is about to be expelled for using magic in the muggle world. However, with
Dumbledore’s help, he is allowed back to Hogwarts for another adventurous yet dangerous
year. To prevent children from using magic that they require to face reality, Professor Dolores
Umbridge is appointed and she has trouble entering in pink.
Umbridge is later appointed as the High Inquisitor and she issues a number of educational
decrees. Argus Filch rejoices and supports her. The students at Hogwarts did not sit back and
watch. Hermoine convinces Harry to teach them advanced spells to prepare them to face
reality, this leads to the formation of a secret organization the "Dumbledore's Army".
However, Umbridge manages to torture out information about Dumbledore’s Army from
them, and now as the name suggests Professor Dumbledore is held responsible for it.
Just when the ministry arrives to take Dumbledore to Azkaban his very own phoenix Fawkes
comes to the rescue. Within no time he disappears with a burst of fire. Fawkes appears in
front of any Dumbledore who is in dire need and trouble. However, Hogwarts is now under
Umbridge and she has become the headmaster, but no one cares all they want to focus is on
getting Dumbledore back. Fred and George leave the school, releasing fireworks all over the
place.
Meanwhile, Harry is still dealing with nightmares and voices and cannot stop Voldemort from
entering his mind and Snape is trying his best to train Harry. Harry finds it difficult to deal
with both Voldemort and Snape.
During this Harry visions that Voldemort has sent Lucius Malfoy to find the prophecy which
might help him defeat Harry Potter. To prevent this from happening the golden trio along with
Neville, Luna and Ginny go to the department of mysteries, and there leads the battle in the
department. The fight is intense and students are in grave danger. In an unfortunate turn of
events, Sirius Black is killed by Bellatrix Lestrange.
However, this leads to one good thing, Cornelius Fudge now knows that “you know who “
has returned and it's time to take action. Back to Hogwarts Umbridge has been removed from
Hogwarts and is also utterly troubled by the mischievous twins Fred and George. Dumbledore
is back as the headmaster of Hogwarts.
1996-1997
Voldemort is back in power again and is gathering his followers again. His motives are the
same again but his intentions are even more malicious as he yearns to get Dumbledore killed
through Draco Malfoy. Harry and Dumbledore bring old alumni of Hogwarts back to the
school for knowing and gaining some very crucial information that they never held before,
which was a memory of Professor Slughorn with the human form of Voldemort, Tom Riddle.
Harry masters potions through a book attributed to the Half-Blood Prince.
This book has mystery as an element and also revolves around the character of Professor
Snape whose real importance we come to know at the end of the Harry Potter series. At the
end of this year, Dumbledore and Harry finally retrieve a Horcrux, which is actually a fake
one and the real one had been taken by R.A.B. Dumbledore, now weakened, returns back

and Death
Eaters attack them. Draco disarms Dumbledore and Snape casts the killing curse on him.
Snape escapes, informing Harry that he is the Half-Blood Prince.Dumbledore’s funeral is
attended by Wizards as well as Magical Creatures.

1997-1998

Dursleys are relocated by the Order of the Phoenix, following which in a short battle Moody
and Hedwig are killed. The trio inherits bequests from Dumbledore, a golden snitch for Harry,
a denominator for Ron and ‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard’ for Hermione.
Voldemort takes over the ministry and death eaters attack Fleur and Bill’s wedding. The trio
leave for 12 Grimmauld Place. Here they learn that R.A.B. was Sirius’ brother Regulus.
Kreacher locates the locket for them which had been taken by Umbridge from Mundungus
Fletcher. The trio gets the locket from the Ministry in disguise and later leaves for the forest.
Ron is affected by the locket and leaves while Harry and Hermione visit Godric’s Hollow and
are attacked by Nagini. A doe Patronus leads Harry to a pond where he finds the Sword of
Gryffindor and Ron guided by the denominator not only saves Harry but also destroys the
Horcrux.
They visit Xenophilius who tells them about the Deathly Hallows and death eaters capture
them. They are directed to Malfoy Manor when Bellatrix tortures Hermione. They escape
from there with the help of Dobby who dies while transporting them. The trio breaks into
Gringotts with the help of Griphook the goblin and gets Hufflepuff’s cup from Bellatrix’s
vault. They head to Hogwarts through Hogsmeade, with the help of Aberforth. Snape moves
out of the school and Voldemort prepares to attack. The students and professors mobilise to
make Hogwarts safe. The cup is destroyed in the Chamber of Secrets using a Basilisk Fang.
Harry and Luna find Ravenclaw’s Diadem, which was a Horcrux hidden in the Room of
Requirement. Crabbe creates Fiendfyre but is unable to control it. The magical fire destroys
the Horcrux and Crabbe dies in the room.
Voldemort assumes that Snape is the master of the Elder Wand and kills him. Harry receives
Snape’s memory thus revealing the truth. Harry realises that he is a Horcrux as well, hence
going to die at the hands of Voldemort. He uses the Resurrection Stone in his snitch to see the
deceased loved ones and then meets the Killing Curse at the hands of Voldemort.
He awakes at a place like King’s Cross and is greeted by Dumbledore. He sees a small
fragment of Voldemort near him. Voldemort’s fragment in Harry was killed by the curse and
he returns to life, feigning death. Narcissa lied to Voldemort about Harry being dead.
Voldemort plans to display his body, Hagrid carries him out of the Forbidden Forest.
Voldemort calls for a truce. Neville kills Nagini using Gryffindor's Sword and Harry shows
that he is not dead.
War continues, and Bellatrix is killed by Molly. Voldemort attacks Harry using the killing
curse which rebounds thus killing Voldemort. This happened as Harry was the true master of
the Elder Wand. Harry repairs his wand, returns the Elder Wand to Dumbledore’s tomb and
leaves the Resurrection Stone in the forest. He keeps the cloak for himself.

19 Years Later
The trio comes to King’s Cross to see off their children to Hogwarts. Harry and Ginny have 3
children, one of whom, Albus Severus Potter, is going to Hogwarts for the first time. Ron and
Hermione have come to drop off Rose, the first of their 2 children. Draco has come to drop
off his son. Teddy Lupin, Victoire Weasley and others as well join the Hogwarts express.
Harry notes that everything was well since his scar hadn’t hurt in the last 19 years.
