7. Below is the order that food passes through the digestive system. Pretend that you
are a sandwich passing through the digestive system write a story for each stage of your
journey.
Organ Story
Mouth My name is Freddy Sandwich. I was having a lovely day till
Miss Cook decided to eat me for lunch. She put me in her
mouth and chewed me with her teeth. In the mouth I felt very
wet from saliva. I felt a bit funny, I think it was the enzyme
amylase breaking down the starch in my body into glucose.

Oesophagus All of a sudden I was travelling down this strange pipe. I think
Miss Cook had swallowed me down her oesophagus!

Stomach After being swallowed down the oesophagus, I started to get

churned up in the stomach. I didn’t like it much in there
because I was being broken down into even smaller pieces by
more enzymes. I could also feel the acid burning me. Ouch!

Small intestine Finally I was let out of the stomach into the small intestine. I
was feeling very small now and Miss Cook was absorbing all
the goodness out of me into her body. She must be hungry….

Large intestine By the time I reached the large intestine there wasn’t much left
of me. But Miss Cook still wanted more! She was absorbing
the water out of my body now.

Rectum Well there was not left of me by the time I reached the rectum.
Miss Cook had broken me up into tiny pieces and absorbed all
the goodness and water that she wanted. Now I was just
waiting to get out of here through the anus.
