Summary Writing Homework – Story of an Hour

 Your homework is to write a summary (use the text and your knowledge) of Story of an
Hour. I want you to include a sentence at the end of your summary, that shares your
ideas/opinions about the story, the themes, or the context (use the PPT to help you).

 Do not copy from the Internet, as you will receive a mark of 0. I have software that can
easily check. ON-time work and that which will fulfils the criteria will receive minimum
90%.

 Write the short summary of 100-150 words (do not make it long!). One paragraph only (page
restrictions are in place to prevent you from doing this).

At the begging of the story of an hour the story the reader is presented to the
main character Mrs. Mallard and is interviewed to what has happened. As
through the start of the story Mrs. Mallard has received news that her was
dead. It was been told to her by her sister in a very careful and gently way
because Mrs. Mallard was suffering with heart problems, This left Mrs. Mallard
in shock. As the story continues Mrs. Mallard went to her room and sat for an
hour thinking that she will now be free and wont have someone to be
controlling her and telling her what to do as her husband did. However in the
other side Mrs. Mallard sister was worried that something wrong will happen
to Mrs. mallard her sister and that she will eventually kill her self from grief.
Finally towards the end everything changes and a lot happens, as when Mrs.
Mallard was going down the stairs with her sister Josephine they notice that
the house door opens and the surprise was that her husband was the one
who opened the door and approached the house. Unfortunately Mrs. mallard
died because of the saddens that her dreams of freedom will no longer be
true.
This setting of the story has been mainly in the room and the writer has done
this to reflect and present the feelings and thoughts of the main character
which is Mrs. Mallard.
Furthermore the main theme in this story is how women like Mrs. Mallard
dislike marriage and suffers from there husbands. This was proved as when
Mrs. Mallard receives the news of her husbands death in happiness and joy
however when she founds out that it was fake and see’s her husband home
dies from sadness.
Finally we may notice that the main technique in the story is irony and that
mostly all parts of the texts is ironic.
