Crime scene arrival
Crime scene is a very important aspect into the criminal investigation as it serves to be
the main sources of information, evidences that helps the judiciary procedure towards
giving the rightful punishment to the culprit. The officers of different branches of the
government are also should be aware of the proper treatment in area where the crime
was committed as it is very fragile in many circumstances either manmade or natural. It
is the main goal of everyone to preserve the scene as much as possible until the
investigator on charge or IOC arrive at the scene.
The very first phase of crime scene treatment is where the very first officer arrives. It
may be police, medic or even fire fighter depending on the circumstances. He or she
may be considered as the first responder. For police directives, an officer who arrive at
the scene where the crime was committed or reported shall take charge in maintaining
the crime scene as it is until the investigator arrives or IOC. The first officer on the
scene have several responsibilities including the following:
1. Preservation of the crime scene
2. Call for the necessary personnel (Medic, SOCO, etc.)
3. Taking note of observation on the crime scene
4. Assurance of the safety and order in the scene especially for the arriving officers
Evidence that originates at the crime scene will provide a picture of events for the court
to consider in its deliberations. That picture will be composed of witness testimony,
crime scene photographs, physical exhibits, and the analysis of those exhibits, along
with the analysis of the crime scene itself.
Aside from the safety of the crime scene, it is also important to ensure the safety of the
personnel and the people around the crime scene as life is always the first priority. If an
injured person is in the boundaries of the crime scene, immediate call for a medical care
is a must as that person can be a source of information aside from being the victim.
Observance of the surrounding as you should treat the scene as like a ongoing crime.
The perpetrators involve might be just around the area or even a civilian may cause
unwanted incidents. Hazardous circumstances brings threat to everyone for example
are chemicals that are harmful should be disposed or controlled properly by the
appropriate people. It is also important to have a continuous surveillance in the
perimeter of the crime scene as it may still impose threat not just for the personnel but
also for the people around the area. Aside from the preservation of the scene and
assurance of the safety of everyone, the personnel that arrive first in the scene should
brief the arriving investigation officers to further hasten the acquisition of information
that is important in the criminal investigation.
