Enhancement)

Participants There were 70 learners that were given intervention and 20 teachers
were involved in the program.
Brief Description of the Program/
Project/ Activity This school program/project which is the I CARE (Integrating
Comprehension Activity for Reading Enhancement) initiative
encourages to intensify the school’s advocacy for reading to make
every learner a reader at their grade level and capacitate teachers to
become effective reading instructors amidst the pandemic. Access to
reading is the foundation to education for students in Pigcarangan
Integrated School and it should be a top priority to maintain reading
skills and keep them engage with books or other reading materials
during this crisis. However, the pandemic has made it even harder for
children in under-resourced places or Puroks of Barangay Pigcarangan
to access books that’s why teachers of Pigcarangan Integrated School
are rapidly developing plans for the continuation of improving reading
and vocabulary words during this period of necessary isolation.
Reaching children and enabling continued learning to read, quickly
requires a traditional teaching and learning practices.
Teachers and parents of Pigcarangan Integrated School need
time to adapt to effectively support students’ learning to read whether
it be through direct instruction or guidance for self-directed learning.
Reading to children and ensuring that children continue to read during
this crisis may sound like an overly simple solution, but it would be an
error to think so. The science of reading reminds us that when children
read frequently with the guidance of teachers as well as the parents,
children continue learning and preserve skills learned prior to the
crisis.
