Carmelite Detachment

Carmelite asceticism teaches detachment from worldly things so that one can be united with God. Through detachment, one worries less and is not afraid of rebukes from others. While the author is not happy as a seminarian, they take comfort that God converses with them. Detachment means not being attached to grades, money, or looks, as those things don't matter - what matters is having a heart that praises God. The author wants to change society by being a good individual through detachment from unnecessary purchases. Detachment helps one realize that in the end, all we have is God.

Carmelite Asceticism: Detachment

Detaching from things makes me like being born again. It is stripping of my worldly
things in order to be united with God. I no longer worry about things. I don’t expect too much.
What I think of is that I am alive and these things are just passing. Everything is passing in this
world, even the hurting words of people who reprimand us. Because of Carmelite detachment, I
worry less. When someone rebukes me, I’m no longer afraid. I just let it pass. What is true is the
Words of Jesus Christ. I am not a happy seminarian in this institution. But what I love about
being here is that God always converses with me. I don’t think being attached to high grades,
having a think pocket, or having good looks because none of it matters. What matters is a heart
that can praise God and embraces his mercy. I don’t want to become a priest because I will
become I will end up as a sad priest. But I want to be a good Christian. I want to change society
by being a good individual in a community. And this starts with detachment. I don’t need to buy
what is not needed. Yeah, sometimes there are things that I like to buy. But time passes and I will
realize that I didn’t really need it.
Stripping off all worldly things makes us realize that what we only have is God. We
come into this world with nothing and go back to Christ with nothing.
