Point Estimate of Population Mean

The sample mean (X) is the best point estimate of a population mean (μ). The means of sample means will approach the population mean as the number of samples increases (X x =μ). In the example, Uno recorded running times of 30 students and calculated the sample mean (X) of 16.375 seconds to estimate the population mean (μ) of average running time. Dividing the data into columns and calculating the mean of each column's means still resulted in 16.375, demonstrating that the average of sample means approaches the population mean.

Point Estimate of Population Mean

An estimate is a value, or a range of values, that approximates the population value.

A point estimate is a specific numerical value of a population parameter. The sample

means X is the best point estimate of a population mean.

The means of the sample means approaches the populations mean.

In symbols, X x =μ

Example:

1. Uno wanted to know the average time (in seconds) that a student can run a 10-m
dash. He recorded the performance of 30 students and the results are shown
below.

15.12 19.22 16. 45 14.01 15.44 15.65

14.34 21.43 18.13 16.76 17.67 14.32
18.12 17.66 11.82 18.55 18.12 16.56
12.31 15.23 16.45 14.65 17.04 18.12
15.61 13.12 18.23 16.32 19.34 15.45

 What is the mean of the time of the students in a 100m dash?

Solution:

 Note that the 30 students comprise the sample of the population of students. The
sample mean can be computed as follows.

X=
∑x
n

491.24
¿
30

¿ 16.375

 So, the sample mean is 16.375 seconds. Remember to round it off to three
decimal places.
The sample mean X can serve as our estimate for the population mean. This means
that we can estimate the population mean μ as = 16.375.

 The point estimation tells us that if we divide the numbers into samples and take
their sample means, the average of these sample means should approach the
population mean.

So, let's divide the data according to columns. Get the mean for each column to obtain
the different sample means.

15.12 19.22 16. 45 14.01 15.44 15.65

14.34 21.43 18.13 16.76 17.67 14.32
18.12 17.66 11.82 18.55 18.12 16.56
12.31 15.23 16.45 14.65 17.04 18.12
15.61 13.12 18.23 16.32 19.34 15.45
X =15.1 X =17.332 X =16.216 X =16.058 X =17.552 X =16.02

Next, let's get the mean of these sample means.

X x=
∑X
n

15.1+17.332+16.216+16.058+ 17.552+16.02

¿ 16.375

Look, we still arrived at 16.375, which is our estimate for the population mean.

Main point:

The point estimation of the population mean tells us that the mean of the sample
mean approaches the population mean. This means that as we collect more samples
and determine their sample mean, the average of these sample means would become
closer and closer to the population mean. That way, we can estimate the population
mean without having to survey the entire population.
