Protien-Synthesis Lesson Plan

The document provides a detailed lesson plan for a Grade 10 Science class about DNA and RNA structure. The objectives are for students to understand how genetic information stored in DNA is used to make proteins and demonstrate the central dogma of genetic transfer using a DNA template model. Students will make models to show how DNA base order determines mRNA order and the translation process. They will describe transcription and translation processes and identify the roles of DNA, mRNA, tRNA, and ribosomes. The lesson involves watching explanatory videos, doing a word puzzle activity, and reading a story to answer guided questions about protein synthesis.

D. Learning At the end of the class discussion, the students
Objectives should be able to:

- describe transcription as the process by

which a single strand of complementary
messenger RNA is made from a template
strand of DNA
- identify the roles of DNA, mRNA, and
RNA polymerase in transcription,
- describe the process of translation as the
formation of a polypeptide chain that will
eventually form a protein or part of a

new skills
(EXPLORE) Direction: Read the fairy tale story of the two
(10 min) fraternal twin brother. After reading the story,
answer the following guide question bellow and
report your answer to your classmates.

Fairy Tale: the story of fraternal twin brother

Once upon a time there were two fraternal twin

brothers: Donald N. Armstrong and Ronald N.
Armstrong. Donald was the smarter of the two, and
he was a successful inventor with many patents.
Although Ronald was not as smart as his brother, he
was extremely loyal. One day Donald came up with
an idea for a solar powered car. Given the ever-
present possibility of energy shortage, an efficient
solar powered car would be in great demand.
However, Donald really didn’t want to leave his
comfortable estate. He certainly couldn’t take a
chance by using e-mail or a fax to send his plans to
the factory. They might be stolen by industrial
spies! Donald knows his loyal brother would do
anything for him, so he asks him to be a messenger
and carry the plans to the factory. At the factory,
the assembly line is set up and factory workers
bring the parts to assemble the prototype. The car
proves to be enormously successful. The Armstrong
brothers buy an even bigger estate and live happily
ever after!

Students will relate each part of the story to the

corresponding component of the process of protein
synthesis.
Who represent the following:
1. DNA Possible Answer:
2. mRNA
3. Nucleus Donald: DNA
4. Triplet Code Ronald: mRNA

Trna? Do these bases differ from those found in
Mrna
2. What base in mRNA can only join with the
adenine base of RNA uracil base of tRNA?
3. What is codon, what does it represent?
4. What is the role of tRNA in protein synthesis?

6. You have learned that there is a stop codon that
signals the end of an amino acid chain. Why is it
important that a stop codon be part of protein
synthesis?
7. A construction worker brings hollow blocks to
build a wall. What part of translation resemble the
construction worker’s job? What do the hollow
