Grade 9 - Composite Functions

This online mathematics lesson for grade 9 covered composite functions. It defined a composite function as a function of a function. An example was given of finding gf(x) and fg(x) given the functions f(x) = x^2 - 2x and g(x) =3-x. The values of ff(-1) and gg(100) were also calculated as examples. The lesson recommended choosing learning tasks based on one's learning style and posting answers on a Padlet wall for feedback. It provided spatial and verbal learners with example problems to practice applying, analyzing, and evaluating composite functions.

ONLINE LESSON ( Secondary)

• Subject : Mathematics
• Grade: 9
• Date: 3/10/2021
• Unit: More equations, formulae and functions.
• Key Learning Area: Composite function.
Starter:
• 𝐺𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝑓 𝑥 = 3𝑥 − 1, 𝑔 𝑥 = 2𝑥 2 . Find

• a) 𝑓 −1 b) 𝑔(5)
Starter:
• 𝐺𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝑓 𝑥 = 3𝑥 − 1, 𝑔 𝑥 = 2𝑥 2 . Find

• a) 𝑓 −1 = −4 b) 𝑔(5) = 50
Topic: Composite function

Walt:
How do you form composite functions such
as gf(x) and ff(x)?
Definition:
• A composite function is a function of a function.
Example:
Given the functions f(x) = x2 - 2x and g(x) =3-x, find the value of

a. gf(4) = g [f(4) ] = g [16-8] = g[8] = 3-8 =-5

b. fg(4) = f [g(4) ] = f[3-4] = f[-1] = 1+2=3

Mini Plenary:

a. ff(-1) = f [f(-1) ] = f[1+2] = f[3] = 9-6 = 3

b. gg(100) = g [g(100) ] = g[3-100]= g[-97] = 3+97 = 100

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USING LEARNING MENU DURING DISTANCE LEARNING

Choose the tasks of your bias and target grade

Try to achieve task set at your target level.

You would learn faster or enjoy learning if you use your specific bias for learning. However, if you
find any other task of a different bias interesting you can attempt it.

As you complete one task post your answer on Padlet wall and then move on to the next task,
vertically or horizontally.
You can use the link provided in chat box to research on any doubts that you have while doing the
tasks

You can ask your doubts to your table leader or teacher through chat box.
