Exercise Problems 03 (ORL)
Transportation Problems
1. A cement Company has three factories which manufacture cement which is to betransported
to 4 distribution centers. The quantity of monthly production of each factory, the demand of
each distribution centre and the associated transportation cost per quintal are given below.
Formulate the above as a transportation problem and find the minimum cost.
2. An oil corporation has got three refineries P, Q, R and it has to send petrol to 4 different
depots A, B, C and D. The Cost of shipping 1 gallon of petrol from each refinery to each depot
is given below. The requirements of the depots and the available petrol at the refineries are
given. Find the minimum cost.
3. A manufacuring company has three factories – F1, F2 and F3 with monthly manufacturing
capacities of 7000, 4000 and 10000 units of a product. The product is to be supplied to sever
stores. The manufacturing costs in these factories are slightly different, but the important factor
is the shipping cost from each factory to a particular store. The following table represents the
factory capacities, store requirements and unit cost (in rupees) of shipping from each factory
to each store. Here, slack is the difference between the total factory capacity and the total
requirements.
Stores Factory
S1 S2 S3 S4 S5 S6 S7 Capacity
Factory F1 5 6 4 3 7 5 4 7000
F2 9 4 3 4 3 2 1 4000
F3 8 4 2 5 4 8 3 10000
Store Demand 1500 2000 4500 4000 2500 3500 3000
Find the optimal transportation plan as to minimize the transportation cost.
4. Consider the following transportation cost table. The costs are given in rupees, the supply
and demand are given in units. Determine an optimal solution.
Source Destination Supply
1 2 3 4 5
I 40 36 26 38 30 160
II 38 28 34 34 20 280
III 36 38 24 28 30 240
Demand 160 160 200 120 240
5. Food packets have to be airlifted by three aircrafts (A1, A2 & A3) from an airport and air
dropped to five villages (V1, V2, V3, V4, V5). The quantities (suitable units) that can be carried
in one trip by these aircrafts to the villages are given below. The total number of trips per day
that an aircraft can make to the villages are also given. Find the number of trips each aircraft
should make to each village so that the total quantity of food transported is maximum.
Villages Trips/day
V1 V2 V3 V4 V5
A1 10 8 6 9 12 50
A2 5 3 8 4 10 90
A3 7 9 6 10 4 60

6. A company has three factories which supply their products to four warehouses. Monthly
capacities of the factories are 120, 200 and 180 units respectively. Monthly requirements of
warehouses are 100, 140, 110 and 120 respectively. Unit shipping cost are as follows.
P Q R S
I 15 - 30 20
II - 24 12 15
III 25 15 - 20
Shipment from I to Q, II to P and III to R is not possible due to certain unavoidable reasons.
Find the optimum distribution programme to minimize shipping cost.
