Zero conditional
Form
Conditional sentences have two parts. The if

* To form zero conditional sentences, we

Form
* To form first conditional sentences, we

‘Second conditional
Form
To form second conditional sentences, we
use if + past simple in the if clause and
would + infinitive without to in the main
clause.
If knew the answer, | would tell you.
* In the if clause, we can use were instead of
was after I, he, she and it.
If I was/were rich, I'd buy that house.
+ Remember: the if clause can come before
or after the main clause. We use a
‘comma when the if clause comes first.
If they weren't so busy, they would come *

Conditionals, wish a?
Use
We use second conditional sentences:
* to talk about things that are not true now,
and are not very likely to happen in the
future,
If |won the lottery, I'd travel around the
world. (| can’t travel around the world
now. And | probably won't win the lottery
in the future.)
* to talk about imaginary situations, things
that are completely impossible.
If people had wings, they would fly. (This is
completely impossible. People will never
have wings.)
* to give advice, with the phrase if! were
you in the if clause.
* If | were you, | would tell her the truth.
I wouldn't do that if I were you.
