Cover Letter and Selection Criteria
Relevant Cert III qualification
I've degree level study in Physiotherapy and Ex Sci. Much of Allied Health is working with older
people in assisting a return to daily activities after injury or surgery. 2nd year clinical placements were
spent working in the rehab setting and many units were focused on post surgery or de-conditioned older
populations.
Experience in an administrative role
I've several years experience in the transaction account and office management area. Most of these
roles involved attending to customer concerns via the phone or by a written response. An accounting
degree has taught me procedural accuracy that translates to high quality and organized administration
work.
Experience in community care
I've had exposure to community care via clinical placement in Physiotherapy. I've also volunteered at
the PCYC's, working with disadvantaged youth via exercise programs. The NSW health system
provides access for Allied Health students “hands on” learning and all placements were within the
model of community care.
Commitment to excellence in all area's of customer service, both to internal and external
In my last role at TVSAT I was often coordinating the movement of our technicians between houses
and units. I would arrange times for our team to visit to conduct repairs and to streamline the
technicians work flow with the the movements of residents.
stakeholders with a strong focus on phone etiquette (demonstrate examples)
I've extensive experience in phone based communication. Most recently at TVSAT I would be the first
contact for the company. I answer calls with a greeting and an introduction that advised both my name
and the business. I ensure I obtain a name and use it throughout the exchange. Looking up up whilst
talking imparts a bright and helpful tone. Smiling whilst communicating is detected by the the listener.
I take notes whilst talking and always strive to remember names for future dealings. I allow people to
express themselves fully without interrupting.
Excellent communication skills (written, verbal and listening)
With a Bachelor in Business and 4 years of tertiary study in Allied Health, I've a rounded formal
education. I've completed 12 weeks of clinical placement within NSW Health, where patients looked to
me as the practitioner though I'm closely supervised. Every placement included presenting an issue to a
knowledgeable audience. This exercise developed public speaking and presentation skills. I'm an avid
contributor to the Letters section of the Sydney Morning Herald and quite often published. I've written
many papers over the course of my tertiary studies. I've taken units in Psychology (core unit in
Physiotherapy) that focus on the listening phase in communication. Listening, and ensuring the
message received is accurate an often overlooked aspect of communication.
Demonstrated planning, prioritizing and organizing skills in relation to a variable workload
I've just done a 13 week job cover placement for the incumbent Accounts person for Joto Fresh Fish.
My responsibilities were varied. The chief accountant I reported to had KPI's in the areas of allocating
EFTPOS payments, counting and applying cash, whilst the Financial Accountant relied on the reports I
generated. The executive level was more interested in debtor days. The customer were interested in
how I responded to their concerns. I had to work briskly and think about priorities to ensure that no
area was neglected.
Demonstrated problem solving skills
Outside work I have interests in technology and motorcycle mechanics. The similarity here is that both
are series of components that work together to create function. I am a self taught auto electrician. I've
just fixed a 38 year old bike that had no power through out the system. With a wiring diagram and a
multi meter I was able to identify the main ignition switch as the problem. Being in storage, insects had
invaded it. This was achieved by establishing power at various stages and the fact it entered the switch
but at no stage did it exit - as the wiring diagram indicated.
High degree of computer competency with a range of Microsoft Office products including Word,
Excel and Outlook
I own many computers that I run and use as learning aides. I am familiar with hardware and software
and perform upgrades for family and friends. I run many Linux operating systems to learn about the
many variations outside Microsoft and Apple. I can configure networks, configure wireless printers and
tune computers to not run unneeded processes that hog resources and slow machines down. I have used
Excel from the earliest versions. I know it up to the level of “'V” and ''H” look ups and pivot tables. I
can type accurately at almost 40 word per minute and know Word well. I am competent with Outlook,
from installing and configuring to using the search function as a data base. Concise and consistent
headings of correspondence sent assists future retrieval.
Ability to work independently, unsupervised and as part of a team
As the office manager at TVSAT it was common for me to be the only one present as the owners and
technicians were in the field. I know what needs to be done, inquire if I'm at all unsure and am self
motivated in taking responsibility for what is assigned to me. I view my role as part of the team and
encourage the ideas that we are all working towards an organizational goal.
Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
As well as having several direct reports during my recent 13 week job cover placement, I had KPI's to
achieve throughout the day. By 9.00 am I needed to have 3 different reports generated and sorted in
Excel for other staff's daily work. At 10.00 am and 3.30 pm an invoice run to customers had to
commence off my PC. Accuracy was paramount.
Evidence of self-directed learning
I have completed 55 undergrad units. Most of these units were done full time on campus but I did
complete the last 2 units of a Business Degree (Fin) externally. From this experience with study. I know
how I learn best. I enjoy the challenge of writing essays, taking exams and putting into practice new
areas and procedures.
Positive attitude, creative and solution focused
In my role at TVSAT, though administration and accounts were my core area, I took responsibility for
selling and promoting the business. Cold calling to pursue business is not easy and a positive attitude is
required when the inevitable rejections arise. To achieve my goal of acquiring more projects for the
partners, I would visit building sites and find the electricians or decision makers and engage them in
conversation. This demonstrates a positive nature and the willingness to try different and creative
approaches to my goal of promoting the partners business.
Demonstrated understanding of own responsibility related to Work Health Safety
I have had a lot to do with the requirements of OH&S legislation as it pertains to trades men working at
heights. I would handle all the paper work for the technicians at TVSAT before their deployment at
sites such as Barangaroo. Every worker is also responsible for being diligent in regard to their
environment and potential hazards/ Everyone is to be mindful and engaged in the process of incident
free work places.
