2.1 GENERAL
PT CND Geoteknika site investigation team arrived in KITIC in 16 April 2013. Prior to start the
investigation work, site observation and access assessment of the site investigation point were
carried out together with PT. Schlumberger Geophysics Nusantara representatives.
The site investigation program was completed on 5 May 2013 and total 4 deep boring points and 26
DCPT points have been executed at this expansion area. Resume of deep boring is shown at table 1.
Table 1 shows the summary of deep boring activities and the location of each deep boring can be
inspected in Appendix A..
Based on drilling work at BH-1 to BH-4, soil layer in this area is Clay with yellowish brown to grey
color. Soil consistency is very soft to soft at 0.00 – 4.00m, firm at 4.00 – 10.00 m and become stiff to
very hard at 10.00 - 30.00 m depth. Until finish drilling work, hard layer which indicated by SPT value
N > 50 is not found. But for cohesive soil, SPT Value with N>30 is included very hard consistency and
reside start 28.0 m.

In order to meet the foregoing scope of works, following site investigation method has been adopted;
Core drilling work was conducted by means of rotary drilling machine, down to maximum 30 meters
depth. Core drilling work procedure implemented follow ASTM D 1452-80, “Standard Practice for
Soil Investigation and Sampling ”, ASTM D 420 - 87, “Standard Guide for Investigating and
Sampling Soil and Rock”, ASTM D 2488 - 84, “Standard Practice for Description and Identification
of Soils (Visual-Manual Procedure)”, and ASTM D 2113 – 99, “Standard Practice for Rock Core
Drilling and Sampling of Rock for Site Investigation”.
Single tube core barrel with little amount of water was used when soil material was encountered.
Triple tube core barrel with diamond bit and circulated water was used when rock material was
encountered. The core obtained from the core barrel was extruded and carefully placed in the core
box for further geotechnical examination, logged and photographed. Representative rock cores were
also sampled for laboratory testing.
The data obtained during the drilling work was recorded in the field logs and includes the following:
project identification, boring number, location, orientation, date boring started, date boring completed,
and drillers name(s), elevation coordinates of the top of the borehole, soil classifications/ descriptions
(hardness, color, degree of weathering, and other pertinent identities), litho logic description,
groundwater level, soil and rock sampling, in-situ testing in borehole, etc.
Standard Penetration Tests was performed in each boring locations every 3m depth interval.
Standard Penetration Test procedure and equipment follow ASTM D 1586 – 84, “Standard Method
for Penetration Test and Split Barrel Sampling of Soils”. The resistance of soil is represented by the
N-value. The number of blows of hammer striking drilling rod to cause 3x6” penetration of the split
spoon at the tip into the soil is counted. The total number of blows for the last 2x6” penetration is
called N – value. The test result recorded and presented in the boring log.

The most important engineering properties required for sub-structure design are shear strength and
compressibility. Reasonably good estimates of these properties for cohesive soils can be made by
laboratory test on ‘undisturbed’ samples.
During the site investigation campaign, undisturbed sampling were taken from a specified depth by
using a Shelby tube sampler (a thin walled tube sampler). Although sample disturbance depends on
factors such as rate of penetration , whether the cutting force is obtained by pushing or driving, and
presence of gravel, it also depends on the ratio of the volume of soil displacement to the volume of
the collected sample, expressed as an area ratio, Ar;
Ar = (Do2 – Di2)/Di2
Where;
Do = outside diameter of tube
Di = inside diameter of tube
Well-designed sample tubes should have an area ratio of less than about 10%.
The Shelby tube sampler used in the field was made from black steel pipe with outer diameter,
Do = 73 mm and inner diameter, Di = 70 mm, the calculated area ratio,
In order to maintain the soil structure and physical composition to be as in original conditions, until it
is extruded to be tested in the laboratory, subsequently the soil sample tube was protected against
shock, vibration and change in moisture. Depth to top of sample and the length of sampler was
recorded in the field log and later presented in boring log.

The undisturbed soil samples and rock core samples collected were send to the soil mechanics
laboratory for testing in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia.
The following are the method of laboratory tests adopted for testing of soil and rock sample obtained
during the site investigation;
The specific gravity of soil, Gs, is defined as the ratio of the mass in air of a given volume of soil
particles to the mass in air of an equal volume of gas free distilled water at a stated temperature
(typically 68° F {20° C}). The specific gravity is determined by means of a calibrated pycnometer, by
which the mass and temperature of a de-aired soil/distilled water sample is measured.
Test is performed in accordance with ASTM D 854. This method is used for soil samples composed
of particles less than the No. 4 sieve (4.75 mm). For particles larger than this sieve, use the
procedures for Specific Gravity and Absorption of Coarse Aggregate (ASTM C 127). The specific
gravity of soils is needed to relate a weight of soil to its volume, and it is used in the computations of
other laboratory tests.
The moisture content, w, is defined as the ratio of the weight of water in a sample to the weight of
solids. The wet sample is weighed, and then oven-dried to a constant weight at a temperature of
about 230° F (110° C). The weight after drying is the weight of solids. The change in weight, which
has occurred during drying, is equivalent to the weight of water. For organic soils, a reduced drying
temperature of approximately 140° F (60° C) is sometimes recommended.
Tests is performed in accordance with ASTM D 2216. The moisture content is valuable in
determining the properties of soils and can be correlated with other parameters.

This test is performed in two stages: sieve analysis for coarse-grained soils (sands, gravels) and
hydrometer analysis for fine-grained soils (clays, silts). Soils containing both types are tested in
sequence, with the material passing the No. 200 sieve (0.075 mm or smaller) analyzed by
hydrometer.
Sieve analysis test provides a direct measurement of the particle size distribution of a soil by causing
the sample to pass through a series of wire screens with progressively smaller openings of known
size. The amount of material retained on each sieve is weighed. See ASTM C 136.
Hydrometer test is performed based on Stokes Law. The diameter of a soil particle is defined as the
diameter of a sphere which has the same unit mass and which falls at the same velocity as the
particle. Thus, a particle size distribution is obtained by using a hydrometer to measure the change in
specific gravity of a soil-water suspension as soil particles settle out over time.
Results are reported on a combined grain size distribution plot as the percentage of sample smaller
than, by weight, versus the log of the particle diameter. These data are necessary for a complete
classification of the soil. The curve also provides other parameters, such as effective diameter (D10)
and coefficient of uniformity (Cu). Tests will be performed in accordance with ASTM D 422 and
ASTM D 1140 – 00.

The liquid limit is determined by ascertaining the moisture content at which two halves of a soil cake
will flow together for a distance of 0.5 inch (13 mm) along the bottom of the groove separating the
halves, when the bowl they are in is dropped 25 times for a distance of 0.4 inches (10 mm) at the rate
of 2 drops/second. Tests will be performed in accordance with ASTM D 4318.
The plastic limit is determined by ascertaining the lowest moisture content at which the material can
be rolled into threads 0.125 inches (3.2 mm) in diameter without crumbling. This test is performed in
accordance with ASTM D 4318.
The shrinkage limit (SL) is defined as the maximum water content at which a reduction in water
content will not cause a decrease in volume of the soil mass. Test is performed in accordance with
ASTM D 427.
These values are useful in soil classification and have been correlated with other parameters.
In this test the specimen is not permitted to change its initial water content before or during shear.
The results are total stress parameters. This test is used primarily in the calculation of immediate
embankment stability during quick-loading conditions. This triaxial test is performed in accordance
with ASTM D 2850.

This section will discuss about the soil investigation data obtained at the site investigation location.
Based on deep boring work, soil description and SPT value for each point as shown at figure bellow,
it was known that the sub-soil found at the investigated area is predominantly clay of very high
plasticity (LL > 50%). Very soft to hard with increasing depth. SPTN gradually change from 2 to 33.
Until maximum depth of boring 30 m, there is no bed rock layer with SPT N > 50 encountered.
The ground water level was found at 3.20 to 3.50 m depth.

Holtz and Gibbs (1956) demonstrated that plasticity index and liquid limit are useful indices for
determining the swelling characteristics of most clays.
Since liquid limit and swelling of clays both depend on the amount of water a clay tries to imbibe, it is
not surprising that they are related.
Table 4. Swelling Potential base on Plasticity Index (Holtz and Gibbs, 1956)
The following are the results of swelling test carried out on the undisturbed sample;
Plasticity Index = 59 – 83 %
It can be concluded that the soil found at the investigated area, KITIC, Delta Mas has Very High
Swelling Potensial.
Further swelling test have been carried out on the collected undusturbed soil sample, the swelling
pressure of the expansive soil is ranging from 5.5 to 8.5 t/m2.
Soil and Water sample from each borehole were tested for pH, Chloride and Sulfate content, and the
following table 5 and 6 summarized the test results.

Axial compression capacity for driven pile can be estimated by using Meyerhoff formula (1956);
Qu = 40 Nb . Ap + 0.2 Ns . As
Where :
Qu = the ultimate pile capacity (ton)
Nb = SPT value at the base of pile, Nb max = 40
Ap = Area of pile tip (m²)
As = Perimeter pile (m²)
Ns = SPT value along the pile embedded
0.2N = 10 ton/m² (maximum)
By employing Nb = 0 and Ns = 5 , The estimated vertical load capacity of those pile are as follows;
Table 7. Vertical Load for Low Capacity Pile
Axial Compression Pile Capacity for Precast Pile, Meyerhoff (1956) suggest the formula bearing
capacity for precast pile is :

Nb = SPT value at the base of pile, Nb max = 40
Ap = Area of pile tip (m²)
As = Perimeter pile (m²)
Ns = SPT value along the pile embedded
0.2N = 10 ton/m² (maximum)
