Preparing The Surface
When painting a room, the first step (and probably the most important) is preparing the surface. Poor surface prepa-
ration is the number one cause of paint failure and can ruin your desired effect if not done properly.
• Before you start, don’t forget to put a drop sheet on the floor and cover any furnishings you don’t want splattered
with paint.
• Thoroughly clean and dry the surface before painting.
• As a general rule of thumb, anything with a shiny surface needs to be dulled before painting.
• High-gloss surfaces must be cleaned and sanded in order for the paint to bond.
• An oil based primer or coat of flat paint can take the shine off a surface and prepare it for the new paint. You will
need a flat, smooth surface for this to work effectively.
• Scrape off flaking paint and wallpaper.
• Patch holes and cracks, allowing the area to dry before proceeding.
• Sand raised imperfections, bubbles and blisters.
• Apply a primer if necessary. Repaired, patched, stained and new surfaces require a coat of primer before painting.
If the surface has been painted before, you only need to paint the patched or repaired areas.

Painting should start at the top and work towards the bottom, painting the ceilings, then the walls, and finally the trim
and woodwork. But before you can start, you need to choose the right tools for the job!

Rollers make painting large surfaces quick and easy. But, buying a roller is not as simple as walking into the store
and grabbing the first one you see. You need to consider the size of the surface you are painting, the texture, and the
type of paint you want to apply. To do your task properly, always consult the experts: ABYAT.

Quality Exterior Primers Provide Many Benefits

In order to get the best exterior painting results, it’s often necessary to use a primer or sealer before applying the
paint.

All top quality exterior primers help paint adhere better to the surface that’s being painted. They do this by making
the surface more uniform for the top coat, so that when the paint is applied, it can get a better “grip” than it would on
the bare surface.

Primers also penetrate and fill the porosity of the substrates and help give the finished paint job a more uniform ap-
pearance in terms of color, hiding and sheen. This is especially true when the surface being painted is porous or is
uneven in porosity.

If there are stains on the surface being painted, primers can help prevent them from “bleeding” through the paint and
ruining its appearance.

A primer is essential, namely when painting new surface that has not been previously painted. You should also use a
primer when repainting an uneven or deteriorated surface.

A high quality acrylic primer is also important to provide concrete surfaces with alkali resistant properties.

Choosing the Right Brushes and Rollers
There is no “Super, All-purpose, Do Everything” brush. To do your painting perfectly, follow the tips:

• You must first match the right brush/roller to the used paint. Natural bristle with oil base and synthetic filaments
(Nylon and nylon/polyester blend) with either oil base or water base latex.

• Then match the brush size to the job in hand. large surfaces need wider brushes. Smaller brushes are for cutting in
work and finer work, and will waste paint, time and leave ridges on larger jobs. A brush that is too big will make
cutting in your corners and painting along woodwork much more difficult.

• Finally match the brush to the surface. For rough surfaces use more durable filaments. With rollers, a shorter nap
is suitable for rougher texture, while a longer nap is best for smooth walls. Make sure your roller rebounds when
squeezed and there are no visible seams.
