Problem Set 3

Copy & answer, use bond paper

Question #1

• An air standard Brayton cycle has a pressure ratio of 11. The air properties at the start of
compression are 101 kpa and 26°C. The maximum allowable temperature is 1300°C.
Determine the heat added

QA = 979.64 KJ/Kg
Question #2

• An air standard Brayton cycle has an air leaving the high temperature heat exchanger at 1200°C
and leaving the turbine at 300°C. Determine the work of a turbine in kcal per kg.

W = 215.105 kCal/kg
Question #3
• Air at 5 bar and 590K is extracted from a jet engine compressor to be used for the
generation of auxiliary power for the cabin. The extracted air is cooled in a constant
pressure heat exchanger down to 450K. It then enters an isentropic turbine and
expands to 1 bar before being rejected into the cabin. If the mass flow is 10 kg/min,
determine the rate of heat transfer out of the constant pressure heat exchanger.
Question #4
• A 12, 000 MW gas turbine operating in the simple open cycle has an exhaust gas flow of 80kg/s.
The gas enters a waste heat recovery boiler at 500°C and leaves at 130°C,
specific heat of the gas is 0.85KJ/kg Kelvin, heat required to produce 1 quantity of steam at 4.5
Megapascal and 320°C from feedwater at 110°C is 3.5KJ. Calculate the quantity of the steam
that can be produced in kilogram per min.
Question #5
• An air standard Brayton cycle has a compression ratio 9.8. Determine the engine efficiency.
Question #6
• An air standard Brayton cycle has air enter the compressor at 27°C and 100Kpa. The pressure ratio is
10 and the maximum allowable temperature in the cycle is 1450K.The compressor and turbine
efficiencies are 85% and 80% respectively. If there is a 27kpa drop between the compressor
discharge and the turbine inlet, determine the actual turbine work.
Question #7
• A gas turbine working on an air standard Brayton cycle has air enter into the compressor
at atmospheric condition and 25°C. The pressure ratio is 14 and the maximum temperature in
the cycle is 1088°C. Determine the heat added.
Question #8
• The pressure ratio of a standard Brayton Cycle is 19.5 and the maximum temperature in the cycle is
1080 deg C. Compute for the cycle efficiency.
Question #9
• A power plant operates on an ideal Brayton cycle. The gas temperature at the turbine
inlet is 1400k (1515.2kj/kg) and the gas temperature at the turbine exit is 800k (821.95
kj/kg). Assume the turbine efficiency is 80%, what is the actual turbine work in kj/ kg?
Question #10
• An air standard Brayton cycle has air enter the compressor at 28°C and 100kpa. The
pressure ratio is 13 and the maximum allowable temperature in the cycle
is 1450K. Determine the heat added.
Supplementary Problems
Sample Question #1
• In a gas turbine plant, the mass flow rate is 6.2 kg/s, the enthalpy at the combustor
entrance is 250 kJ/kg and the enthalpy at the exit is 980 kJ/kg. What is the capacity of
the combustor in kW?
Sample Question #2
• In a gas turbine unit, energy entering is 600 kJ/kg at 250 m/sec and a mass of 4 kg.
Energy leaving the turbine is 486 kJ/kg at 170 m/sec. Heat loss is 10 kJ. What is the
turbine work?
Sample Question # 3

• The compressor for an actual gas turbine requires 450 kj/kg of work to triple the inlet pressure. The
inlet air temperature is 105*C. determine the compressor air exit temperature in Celsius.

Wc = mcp (T2-T1)
450 = 1 (T2 – 105 )
T2 = 555*C
Sample Question # 4
• The compressor for an actual gas turbine requires 450 kj/kg of work to triple the inlet pressure. The inlet air
temperature is 105*C. Determine the engine efficiency if the mass flow rate is 5 kg/sec.

P2 = 3P1
P2 / P1 = 3

E = 0.2694 x 100 = 26.94%
