Core Logging: Geological Study Guide

Core logging is a specialized skill requiring careful observation and accurate recording of drill cores. It involves geological study and documentation of the lithology, formations, and depositional environments represented in the core. Core logging is typically done by multiple geologists on a drilling project, as visual identification of rock types can be inconsistent without aids like natural gamma ray logging. Proper core logging is important, as it provides the lithological data necessary for rock mass classification and foundation design engineering.

Core Logging ”geological study and recording of drill cores”

- is a highly specialized skill requiring careful observation and accurate recording.

Geological logging of the hole crated in the drilling process is sometimes done without
the collection of the core.
Logging techniques are extremely useful, dependable and accurate for lithologic
identification, Formation evaluation, And depositional environment analysis
“Core logging” simply means the geological study and recording of drill cores.

Core – A cylindrical section of rock, or fragment thereof, taken as a sample of the interval
penetrated by a core barrel and brought to the surface for examination and for analysis.

ANALYSIS
 All drill hole data gathering is called logging.
 For logging, the geoloist will require a notebook, or logging sheets, pen, tape
measure, penknife, clinometer or protractor, and ruler for measureing angles
 For easy identification of rock types its best to look at wet core
 Then the core has been recovered from the core hole and the core barrel has been
opened, the core should be placed in a core box
 The core should always be examined in good light, preferably natural light
 No other skilles are required other than the ability to make competent mineral and
rock identification
 The core boxes should be laid out in correct order
 Small wooden blocks with te depth clearly written a marker pen
 The core that has been correctly placed in the boxes should run from left to right with
the shallowest depth in the bottom right hand corner
 The core samples are then studied carefully and all the important rocks and structure
are noted along with the depth of formation

Geologic drill core logging

- is done by several different geologist in a multi-hole exploration drilling project.because
of difficulties in visual identification of the different rock intersected in a borehole, there
are often inconsistencies in identifying and classifying different rock types. It has been
shown that unraveling ambiguities in lithologic identification can be greatly improved by
using natural gamma ray logging.

GEOTHECHNICAL LOGGING PARAMETERS

Geotechnical logging parameters capture all relevant information for the major rock
classification systems.
(provides data necessary for rock mass classification and should be conducted so that
the data can be easily applied to all industry standard classification systems.)

The following are the parameters recorded within each geotechnical domain:
 Hole identification and from interval for the geothechnical domain interval logged
 Rock type
 Weathering
 Estimated rock strength
 ‘core 10’ the total length of all core pieces> 10 cm
 Matrix and structural type including faults, intense fracturing, and sheared rock

WHY IS CORE LOGGING IMPORTANT?

Core logging forms an important aspect of an exploration geologist job and Important
stage in the follow up work to an exploration target. At some stage in your engineering
geological career you are going to have to log core. Without good core logging any
foundation design is worthless and the onus is on the engineering geologist to produce
high quality logs on which the engineer can base his design.
